Rather than take up space on DH/DS, I'm going to set up camp here. Now that I have a digital camera, the pics will be flowing in constantly, and I'll post links to their index pages on my website.
edit/update: as part of my website revamp (dec 2, 2003) the path to the biking pics has changed. now everything is under

hehe...yeah, so about that spill. Looks good, eh?
I would say that I meant to do that, but the scrapes on my leg tell me otherwise.
Oh well, live and learn. Hopefully next time i'll make it, and perhaps won't knock Toshi's bike out of alignment either. :D

And now you're at three, thanks to the carbon cranks thread. Wow. What say we get Keith and Keirse onto ridemonkey? We could use this thread as our own little space, without annoying the many non-riding members of humba with our banter.

Muahahahah....
We're taking over ridemonkey. me and my, now 4, posts.
Actually that would be kind of fun. On the other hand, if we use the HUMBA list then we might intise all those non-riders to come join us. Or we might just annoy them. ;)

Ah, xc goodness. I don't think you ever saw my Cannondale, as I had the Stinky by sophomore year. Here's my old ride:

Today was a busy day... lots of building and assembling. I thought you guys might like the summary:
The negatives
flat tire on arrival
Packing tape used as rimtape
no seat or seatpost till wednesday
crank isn't splined
SRAM Derailleurs and shifters    Who makes derailleurs and brake levers out of plastic?? (sorry: "Composite")
no pedals :(
The positives (neg, ecting the obvious fact that the bike is pretty sweet)
Light ass wheelset
Race face bars&stem
Four inches of buttery smooth rear travel (now I know what I was missing):D
Not Sure yet:
cable disc brakes
175mm cranks
Manitou fork:confused:
The kicker:
All this in sasquatch size (that's my size) for a mere 27lb (1.5lbs less than the old ride, and yes, I weighed them both)
Anyway, here's the before pictures. (after pictures when i rip all that sram crap off the bike and maybe put on the discs will follow):

If it makes you feel any better, I still can't jump.
anyway, I was riding back from the garage (with no seat) and I tried climbing the stairs on that bridge that goes over storrow... It's soo much easier (even though the X-vert is a crappy ass fork). Why didn't I think of this full suspension thing sooner?

I can crash though, that I can do.
Anyway, the bike looks smooth. Can't wait to see it in person.
On another, unrelated topic: What do you guys think of HUMBA T-shirts. I doubt that we could get them made by Sat. but it would be sweet if we all had matching shirts. We would look like a team. :D

for a single use t-shirt that would look pretty cool, you could just buy a few tees that are the same color, Make a stencil that says HUMBA, and spraypaint the shirts. I have a friend who has a shirt with the WB Mason head on it that was done this way, and it looks pretty good.

Sorry about not responding to this -- the email notification never went out? Anyways, the trail condition at the Fells was pretty good. Mud wasn't a problem either on either of the rides, and the brush was kept in check. Some of the logs used to mark the trail's path were haphazardly placed, however.

It's even working when you hit the little arrow icon on the topic list pages? Odd.
Anyways, I leave you all with my lovely and likely incoherent final sentence to my paper, which still needs a page or three of stuffing in the middle:
This level of involvement is unattainable by the omniscient narrator, who through detached observation and imperative declarations is consciously used by Bely in Petersburg to quell confusion in the reader which stems from his use of multiple perspectives in the cubist style.
Snooty enough? :D

well... between the two of us I guess we have pages that work on everything, I guess Omniweb and opera don't like my sketchy javascript:(
My resoning for doing all this was that i like the idea of the thumbnails, but when I download the movies they don't work right unless i save them and open them in Quicktime, so I just embedded quicktime (obviously you have to have quicktime to use it though). Clearly it failed. Oh, well

As far as I've heard, in terms of becoming an "official" group, you need:
1) an advisor
2) a constitution
3) I think a list of officers or something of that nature.
I think that's it, but I'd love to hear what the exact details are.
This is totally gratutitous, but I've always wanted to use this in a post: :dancing:

Well, no one has expressed interest in the Intense yet (Keith, didn't your buddy who went riding with us want it? how much?), so it might live in my room next year. It wouldn't be bad at all, swapping a fork and wheelset between two otherwise built-up frames, no... :D

Are you planning on selling all the components off the Intense also (other than the fork)?
Toshi
05-15-2002, 01:49 PM
I could donate it to Kei... er, I mean, humba. But I won't. :D
Most of the components currently on the Intense will migrate to the new frame. Did you see the pics that I added a few posts up, btw? That's my fork! Anyways, the only new things I'll need to buy to make two fully-rideable bikes are a set of derailleurs, and a wheel build for the bent wheel lying around my room. But I don't think I'll do that -- I'll just shelve the Intense until someone wants it.

Instead of studying I've been surfing the buy/sell pages... and I'm down $463.50 after buying the fork, a pair of XTR brake levers (which rock), and XTR rear shifter (I'm going 9spd on the superlight), and the beater frame.
All I need now is a pair of brakes, 9spd cass and chain, and the handle to replace the broken one on my old XT shiftbrake combos and I'll have two complete bikes (but I get the feeling I'm gonig to have to drop some more cash to get another reverse spring rear der (I'm just too used to it now) and to replace the XTR bottom bracket on the superlight (when I pulled it out of the old bike I found out the cups were pitted)
Arrgh... it never ends.
Toshi
05-16-2002, 04:38 PM
That's too bad -- this reading/exam period is enriching me. Assuming that one of the three buyers bites on the Intense, I'm going to be up about six large over the last few weeks, and will have a new bike to play on. Ooh!

I think the ride is off... I just found out i have to master a demo tape for FinkFankFunk, but on the upside I think I might be able to score some old school LX brakes, that busted lever (actually just a pair of XT levers, I gave up on finding the part and I'm just going to cannibalize the levers I buy), and a pair of plartforms (so I can learn to jump like a real man) for $45. And i sold that XTR der I had in my parts bin for a year for $45, so I break even -shipping. yay.... still haven't studied too much though.

Driving home from Mammoth, I pushed the ol' Maxima a bit too hard, and ran her clean out of gas. At night. Along highway 395. We (Ruben and me (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/miscellaneous/sentimental/ruben_and_me.jpeg), or Ruben and I in the context of the sentence) feared that it would be 20 or miles to the next gas station, and it was quite the sleepless night inside our tent -- we camped the whole trip -- with the big rigs roaring by. Come next morning, we took off riding along the highway, and found a gas station only 3 miles away. Stupid, stupid, stupid. :D

Friday morning edit: go Brasil! Also, a cheer for road bikes which get me to the quad and back to watch Brasil (you have to dig the huge flat pedals, no? :D ):

'twas a nice ride today, Ari. :D Keith/Thad, are you aware that he's eyeing road bikes? The dark side is calling him... in other news, were it not for the fact that Belmont Wheelworks won't be giving me my breaks back until Tuesday, the Evil could potentially be rideable tomorrow afternoon. :D :D :D I think i have to learn how to ride smoothly (ie, sans brakes) in the next couple of days...

When do I get to ride with this legend (by legend I mean the bike) in person?? What are you and ari doing monday after work?
I got the bomber back today, and I added about 10cm of oil to make it feel super progressive. It feels pretty good, but It needs some braking in (which should be done on monday after work).

I don't think I'll have any work to speak of until mid-July, so I'm game for riding Monday, Tuesday, whenever. My knees may break off, tho, unless I can figure out how to get a semi-normal riding position out of the Evil. It's fun, but with the seat down low I feel like I'm a circus freak, and with the seat high I have to stretch for the bars (thanks to the 55 degree seat tube).

hehe... circus freak. I was going to suggest just sitting on the seat tube because the angle was so slack, but I thought that would be mean. Of course, now that you said something...
Anyway. I'm thinking of meeting people in the harvard vicinity in the 5:15 vicinity. I'l give y'all the hard details on monday during the day.

Verdicts and results from tonights mini-urban ride:
The Evil is much easier to manual than any of the bikes I've had as of yet, including the Planet X Bommer. However, I still suck at them: 3 good manuals out of countless attempts. Verdict: rider incompetence
Doing that cool turn-out from rolling backwards is hard with double crown forks. The Super T must go. 3 good turn-outs (what are they called anyways?) out of not quite so many attempts. Verdict: rider error
Bunnyhopping is all good on the beastie. I cleared the medium height section of the chain fence along Mt. Auburn on my first try. Verdict: thumbs up all around
I gave the bike a taste of climbing by attempting to scale the concrete barrier alongside the stairs at the athletic complex (the same one that Keirse and I do nose wheelies down). I felt as if I was going to fall straight backwards on my head, and didn't make it up. Verdict: will postpone until tomorrow
Finally, the wardrobe: I wore my infamous Pinkbike "I love seven inches in the rear" shirt, my moto full face, arm guards, shin guards, and Vans. I looked like a huge dork, and was sweating like one as well. For tomorrow I think the shin guards will go, but I'll stick with the arm and head protection (altho I do have a normal helmet... hmm) for tomorrows ride. Verdict: style, protection, comfort, where art thou? Not at Harvard  :D

Here's the page for today's ride (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/index.html).
Casualties from tonight's ride include Keith's front wheel (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/10.jpg), fork, and skull (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/2.jpg), and my seatpost. Keith ate it big time (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/1.jpg) on the drop after eyeing it up (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/0.jpg) as he always does.
Keith's high school friend, Dave (I think -- correct me if I'm wrong here, Keith) also did the drop (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/5.jpg). Make sure to note of his fork and chain.
I fell on the drop, too: immediately after this picture (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/6.jpg) was taken, I sat down with some force. That's what I get for trying (and later succeeding) to pedal kick the drop on the Evil (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Movies/MVI_1232.AVI) (movie). My seatpost is listed as a casualty because it bent during the ride, probably because of the Evil's crazy 55 degree seat tube angle. I'm calling Hurricane up tomorrow in hopes of getting it warrantied, and I'll be quite peeved if they don't hook me up, since this was the first real ride on it.
Anyways, all of the pics are pretty good from today, mainly thanks to the interesting subject matter (namely Keith's tacoed front wheel :D ). Enjoy.

ouch. that photo of keith, fork pointing downward, foot out of the pedal and going forward, doesn't bode well for the immediate future.

toshi, based on the photo (http://140.247.135.42/images/humba/june%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/6.jpg) of the drop you posted, you'd best hope that hurricane doesn't see it. if you sat on any post hard from that landing, none would likely survive. just too great of a moment arm (length of exposed post and seat tube angle of the imperial) for anything to survive that. you're probably lucky that it didn't fracture and pierce yr tender bits...
good luck w/ the warranty though, and have fun w/ the bike. i can't wait to try peter's at some point.

It's too bad that Keith is so freakishly tall that the photog (me) chopped his head off.
The funny thing about the pic that you mention is that the seatpost was high only because it had already bent in a strictly-xc ride around the NEMBA loop, and I couldn't lower it.
Additions: another item of note is that by "sitting down with some force" when I crashed I meant that I sat down on the ground  , not the seatpost. I learned at an early age that seats are not friendly to land on from any height. :D Also, for my hahhhvahd friends who only read this thread, here is a link to my whining about my bent (and stuck) seatpost: http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23270

So it looks as if I'm either going to sell the Evil or somehow get my hands on a normal xc bike by other means:
From Dave Weagle (Evil Bikes engineer):
If you really feel that you need to run the post with more than 5-6 inches (and thats pushing it) exposed (making a 19 inch frame) I suggest that you look into selling your Imperial and picking up something with a longer seat tube.
 :(
Update: I think I'm going to keep it, but strip it down a bit to make it a dj/urban-specific bike (ie, cheap rigid fork w/disc tabs, single ring/guide). Time to see if JOJO's xc bike is still up for grabs...

For those curious, here is the paper trail of my conversation with Dave Weagle about the proper use of the Imperial:
Hi again,
The extension of the seatpost in the pictures is a bit deceiving: the post
was stuck at that level because it had bent while I was running it higher
(at the minimum insert line, about 2 inches further out than in the picture
of the post in the frame) and had stupidly tried to lower it before doing
the ledge near Governor's Road in the Fells. Ideally, I would run the seat
higher, however, since I wasn't getting proper leg extension even then. The
12 inch figure came from my napkin calculations of where the minimum insert
line would be on a 410 mm Thomson, and I kept it just to make the length
component of ft.-lbs. cancel out.
As a solution, I'm going to keep the frame (whew!), but build it up as a
pure trials/urban/dj rig: rigid fork, single ring guide (I called John
P/Reggie yesterday and changed my long-standing DRS order to a SRS). For xc,
I'll save up a bit, and get one of those newfangled Hollowpoints. I hear the
guy who designed the 2003s is pretty sharp. ;-)

Speaking of road bikes...for those who don't know I'm gonna be getting one! I'm in the process of buying a 2001 Lemond from a guy I found on roadbikereview.com.
It's gonna be sweet. :D

For xc,
I'll save up a bit, and get one of those newfangled Hollowpoints. I hear the
guy who designed the 2003s is pretty sharp. ;-)
For the uninformed, what is a Hollowpoint?

hehe...one of my roomates did the same thing this year.
He lost a palm pilot i think it was back in november. Ended up getting a new one, which then broke, and then got a third one. Then when we were moving the couch down into storage he found the first one stuck way underneath the cushions. so now he has two.

One and all, we're going riding tonight. It will take about an hour for me to get the newly rebuilt fork back on and install the Evil chainguide which showed up today.
Random: nice move, Thad. :thumb: Ari, I didn't have any ghetto pictures (altho my old Proflex certainly wasn't ghetto, I have no pics, let alone on my computer).
For now, let's meet in front of 20 Dewolfe at 9:00 to be safe. note different time!

The ride, in fragments. New Evil guide. Many delays, all my fault. :D Earlier oil change botched by me, too. Fun pedal kick drops. Another bent seatpost. Skater punk 13 year olds and nasty glaring cops. Ari and Keith going wild on the stairs. Multiple flats. Mulch in lieu of air. A bumpy ride home. Burning pizza. Now this. Ugh.

what toshi meant to say was that everyone (but me) decided to destroy their bikes, and succeded. I, on the other hand, spent the evening getting intimate with platform pedals for THE FIRST TIME EVER (I apologize, I'm an XC guy), and thanks to some strategically borrowed shinguards[thanks toshi], I escaped the night scot free.

That pit area where the bmxers used to hang out is fenced off, but most of the fun stuff (like the wallrides) is still accessible. I'm not sure if we're supposed to be there, but that's another issue entirely. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that both Ari and Keith were getting some solid wallrides in. :thumb:

Ari,
At Belmont, Tim showed me the same Titus (with those cool bolt-on dropouts) as he did for you. I think I might go with a sane (LX/V brake/unknown fork?) build on one of those when the xc bug hits with full force.

so today's ride summary: We did the MTB loop and res loop at the fells. The trails are really getting hurt bad over there. people have been making new lines all over the place to get around the hard stuff, and with the wet weather, the new lines are starting to rip up the forest. We did our best to block off any new lines we saw so the vegetation could grow back. (and we apologize to the dude who tried to ride one of those new lines before we were done blocking it... oops [even though he shouldn't have been riding it anyway])
I think ari ad I might want the day off tomorrow, with the urban on fri and the trail on sat, sun might need to involve a lot of TV.

I agree. my legs are sort of hurting right now. But it was most definitely a quality ride. Lots of fun, and a good workout.
World cup match in 6.5 hours! woohoo. who do you guys think will win.

Morning update: I met the guy who wants to buy my huge fork, and he's cool. He needs to sell his old (brand new, tho) fork first. This is a thread about the fork he is selling in order to buy mine: Stratos LR-1 (http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17682&perpage=60&highlight=Stratos LR1&pagenumber=1). <- Messing with the perpage number is fun.
Ari: did you end up downloading this to convert your fonts? I haven't tried it yet, but it's shareware... http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Way/4789/TTConverter15.hqx (a few minutes later) Ok, it seems to work, too. What could be better?

Yeah, I tried that, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with the type of fonts that we were dealing with.

I'm leery of that White Bros fork, tho. Marzocchi, please. :D
Your fonts weren't .ttp files? I wanted the Fatboy Slim BLTC font that a13x uses in his pictures (which he hasn't posted for a while -- I'll post a sample), and it worked just fine for that. Do commercial fonts have some protection against conversion?

No...they weren't. They were True Type, type 1 fonts, I believe. It was actually two different files the made up the PC font that converted into two different mac files. They had funny extensions that I can't remember right now.

Two of the bikes on my list above have been sold already. :( At least they were the sketchy ones (Klein with the WB, ok, the Yeti wasn't sketchy). Some guy selling his girlfriend's M2 already got booted off the list since he was very reluctant to send a pic because it would be a waste of his time if I ended up buying a different bike. With that attitude...
Anyways, here's another sample of the Fatboy Slim font, from my new gratuitously oversized header image from my local web page:

Gotta say the best deal in that lot is the DBR. It's got a sweet price and minus the rims, It's stacked. Besides, after having bombers for so long you'll cry yourself to sleep at night with a manitou. (the ti bike and the GT are also cool, but pricey... and who would want to beat up a collectors item?)
Also: I'm riding with byron after work. gonna be a speedy XC if anyone's interested. drop a brother an email (or post)

I am definitely leaning towards the DBR as well. The guy was even the nicest in response to my call for pictures; or at least he was tied with the gold S-works guy. I just need my fork buyer to get the money and pay me and then all will be well.
