You know you want the VP-free :) (isn't it a little spooky that if you google for 'santa cruz vpfree' it says " are you sure you don't mean 'santa cruz vpp free.' i think it's spooky)

that could be a good thing tho. give you time to save your pennies as i've recently discovered is necessary with santa cruz

Hopefully you didn't mean goatse, which is no longer up. :dead:
The real question is, why were you searching for "goats e" in the first place?

hehe. i've actually never seen goatse, thankfully. but it's a slashdot legend, along with the "penisbird"

:D
Yes...aparently a whole bunch of the slashdot code is written to try and prevent people from secretly posting links to either goatse or tubgirl.
Here's the link that I read it from:
http://boingboing.net/2004/01/16/goatsecx_taken_offli.html
Have you seen the Goatse prime generator?
It uses the original Goatse picture, which I don't know if I should post here...
But if you search google for "goatse prime" then you'll find it.

aghagh
in non-goatse news :D i went dirt jumping today, and actually got the balls to hit a decent size double. in other words, i have graduated from the kiddie jumps. this double was about the size of the middle line at the fenway jumps if that helps. yay me. the little bmx kiddies were impressed that i didn't kill myself.

no pics from today's riding. springfest, eh?
anyway, hit up post canyon so some good north shore style trailriding, then hitting some drops/walking some drops and wimping out, then some dirt jumping. ahhh, a full day :D
oh, and i have decided that i don't want a vp free. specs are finally up on santa cruz' website and all sizes have the same 32.3" (i think, might be off on the final decimal) standover. not cool. i definitely don't want a tall bike, just one with lots of travel :D
one cool bike narlus/tim has pointed me towards is the knolly v-tach. heard anything about this bike, guys?
http://www.knollybikes.com/features.html
it has the same crazy evil-like seattube angle, but has decent standover and looks sweet. only problem: $2600-2800 for the frame only. hmmmmmmmm. swinging an entire build in the 3 months that i have left at my current job might be tough.
a nice big pic not inlined as to not screw with the page's formatting: http://www.knollybikes.com/photos/vtach_large.jpg
Toshi
04-26-2004, 10:23 AM
eh, i have decided that the knolly definitely is too expensive. maybe if i was canadian  (no, seriously, it's priced in loonies or toonies or whatever the canadian dollar is)
another one under consideration: transition dirtbag, which unfortunately shares the same rear suspension setup as my old and unloved stinky. geometry is different, however, and it's a local company. finally, $1650 for the frame AND a 888R, not bad, eh?
http://www.transitionbikes.com/DirtBag.cfm
http://www.transitionbikes.com/images/DirtBagFinalStudio_LARGE04.jpg
hmm, i wonder if the frame is made in taiwan even though the company is based out of seattle...

plus i probably identify with the taiwanese more than joe sixpack, eh? :D would still like to support usa or canadian schmoes if possible, tho (i'm waiting to hear back from them on the country of origin q).
yeah, 10 is a lot. but that's lighter than a big hit, for instance, and quite a few lighter than some of the big bikes i've seen on the trails here, giant dh, banshee scream, (big hits), bullits, rm6/rm7s...

i just figured out that i could quit my job today and be able to pay rent and sorta eat until august 1, when my current apt lease runs out. no new bike if i do this, but work is really getting on my nerves as of late... :dead: so it's tempting. we'll see how long i last.

recently read books:
"the demolished man" by alfred bester. read it if you like sci fi! one of the earliest and best, ranking up there with philip k. dick's works
"the universe below" by william broad. somewhat dry despite a conversational/novelistic style, but a good way to catch up on the happenings in the deep sea exploration that has accelerated since the end of the cold war
"blind man's bluff" by a bunch of authors (sonntag, drew, et al.). very entertaining non-fiction about the submarine happenings during the cold war.
still on the shelf is wilbur smith's "monsoon". eh, not so hot on the pirate-novel concept, but maybe i'll launch into it tomorrow

other thoughts floating around in my head: i did a few pretty biggish jumps today. not quite big, just biggish. heh. definitely pushing the limits, and haven't broken myself yet.
also, staying at home and watching "eastern standard 2" is a perfect saturday night for me, at least after last weekend's binge :thumb:

ya. somehow i overstepped my progression today  . on a jump i'd hit last week i totally ate it, slamming down HARD on my butt/hip. i now have a full spectrum of colors showing on my butt. go me. no pics, sorry :D . maybe i should look into getting some full body armor... naw.
but on the other hand i hit a few more of the things i'd wimped out in the past. today's ride was with 3 other :monkey:s btw. good stuff.

so keith and i went on a suprisingly (for me) brutal road ride yesterday. out of shape and lots of headwind. grrr. went out through watertown and belmont out to concord and back. very sore.
current favorite song: robert earl keen's "feeling good again"
bizarre vendor behavior question of the day: why is symantec playing "conjunction junction" to me over the phone while i'm on hold?
fricking windows. nothing like getting hit with more than one new worm simultaneously.
have a great day...

that sounds like a good plan, but I would leave well enough alone unless you're leaking oil. Nail polish is not going to have the resilience of the enamel/magnesium (or whatever) coating and you're going to get yourself into a vicious cycle of re-fixing it over and over as polish wears off, losing a bit of the original enamel each time. If you're leaking oil tho, you've got nothing to lose.
Also, the polish isn't going to stick unless the scratch got all the way through the enamel coat.

fair enough. i'll wait to see if it loses oil.
i might as well report on today's ride since there are no pics. er, hmm. we did 2 full runs at post canyon, rode some old stuff, some new stuff, and had a great time despite really loose, dry, ball-bearingish dirt. i am consistently bottoming out my fork, which shouldn't be happening since i have heavy springs in there. i am also consistently hitting the biggish :D drops, and in particular hit the 6-7ish footer once on each run without preliminary wimp-runs-to-the-edge-with-brakes-locked.
i think the monster + canfield should cure my bottoming out problem

I did ride the fells yesterday and have realized the following.
1. It's a long way to the fells if you miss the college ave turn off the rotary and instead follow rt 16 to the krispy kreme in everett
2. the bike is much better than i am. and much better than my old one. even out of shape and technically rusty as i am, it was charging up things that I never used to do.
3. i suck a lot less when i haven't whacked the rebound damping on the fork to ON with my knee
4. orange marks on trees are not in fact lazy substitutes to MB loop signs. briefly ended up on a hiking trail. oops.
5. VPP works great, though i may tune it so that the rear is a tad more active. i haven't ridden it enough to know if it's too tight, or just doing what it's supposed to do. it responds well dropping off of rocks, etc, but no pedal bob on the climbs.
6. i'm afraid that the CODA pedals that I still had from my old bike still suck.
7. it's a long way back from the fells if you assume that the sign pointing college avenue to the left is actually right. in fact, it puts you on boston ave.
those are the observations so far. i'll try and go out again this wkend and maybe only get lost twice.

Yeah, in principle. I may be supposed to have dinner from my blk grp. I'll try to figure that out while you're in your final, if you want to give me a call when you're done.

in other news, i am going insane waiting for my frame...
edit: plus, in my continued bike-whore-ness, i am buying this avalanche 9x3" shock (http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85816&highlight=avalanche) to provide another option to the manitou swinger (9.5x3", i think) that's coming with the frame. why? they're supposed to ride differently, as the swinger is a spv shock while the avy is not, and the avy is reputedly bombproof and perhaps a better match for the monster t. also, the 0.5" difference in eye to eye length might change the geometry favorably, and if it doesn't, craig@avalanche can alter it since he and the company are cool like that. finally, it's a smoking deal, and i like konadude since he's an engineer and grad student. :D

unfortunately i don't know where that video was taken. it's the biking equivalent of the forwarded, photoshopped pictures of the shark jumping to "eat" the diver hanging out of a helicopter. except that it's real, of course.

Toshi - If you get the Avy, just send it back to get it lengthened. If you put it on your Canfield with a 9" i-i it will bottom out on your seat and your pedaling position, sag, will be in the wrong position to pedal good. Plus your head tube angle will be WAY slack. The F1 has been fine tuned over the last four years to get perfect pedaling performance at the correct sag position. If you change it you won't like it.

ok, will do. i was kind of hoping it wouldn't bottom out, and then the 9" i2i would have given the bike a unique lowrider look... :D

ah, i realized that i haven't told my paypal story here:
i check my credit card and bank balances online, using yodlee incidentally (http://www.yodlee.com/m/l/). so i go to check everything on monday morning, knowing that i paypaled $750 for my job last week to help purchase a domain name. much to my surprise i see three new paypal charges of $80, $760, $790, and even stranger, they're on the credit card that i don't use for paypal.
i immediately check my own paypal account, and the charges don't appear anywhere. so i call up paypal, and it turns out that some schmoe signed up for a new paypal account a few days ago with my credit card info and mailing address (probably obtained through my website or a telephone directory). :dead:
a few more phone calls to american express and paypal and one signed affidavit (stating that the charges indeed were fraudulent) later, and the charges still haven't been reversed... fraud departments work slowly.
moral of the story: check your account balances often!

If you pop off the caps and give the push rods a slide you can tell in 2 sec whether its the internals of the stantions. (I'm guessing it's the stantions either being shifted or mushroomed)
also, why'd you push the chain out with the guide? It seems you ould want to push it up into the frame (slightly less smooth running but more out of the way.
and... Thad and I rode again today. Looks like we're gonna be in tip top shape soon enough.

ah, good point. i will go do that now.
about the guide, pushing up wouldn't have taken enough slack since the natural chainline is very close to the chainstay as it is, without the derailleur in the way and all...

so I was wondering why the 5th E hasn't been as active as I thought it had been, and it turns out that the pressure in the IFP chamber had fallen. I brought it back up to 50 PSI, what the Santa Cruz (http://www.santacruzmtb.com/bicycles/blur.php?setup=1) site says it should be for my weight and it's a bit better.
I'm confused, though, since the Progressive lit (http://www.progressivesuspension.com/pdf/5th-Air-Setup-Guide.pdf) says that the IFP pressure shouldn't be below 75 psi. Anyone have any thoughts? I don't wanna break this thing.

image -> mode -> lab i think. it separates out luminance and color. blur on the color and edges (luminance generally, except for sharp color boundaries which don't occur in nature all that often) stay sharp and color noise is dissipated.

36-18 works on the evil without a tensioner, as it turns out, so i'm not going to sell the evil for pennies on the dollar after all.
now to go ride, as i bought a lovely rigid fork for it, for the grand sum of $15. :thumb:
post ride update: the bike feels really good single speed, rigid, one brake. nothing rattles, everything feels very solid. however my riding is horrible. can't manual, can barely bunnyhop, have forgotten how to do 180s, and i realize now that i've been far too reliant on brakes before... :dead:

ya, that's been kicking around for a while. as the slashdot comments note, it doesn't change the physically different control layout or sequence-shooting capabilities of the 300D vs. the 10D tho. (or the plasticky body, my main complaint with the lil' dslr :D)

why the brake rotor? rusted in bolts. time to make a trip to the bike shop... :dead:
riding-related factoid: riding brakeless really does help manualling. i have been riding street, and, more often, in the parking lot :D , so my manuals were starting to feel ok, but i felt way too reliant on the brakes to bring the nose down. a brakeless session just now cured that feeling, with only minor casualties to report from the pavement.

try soaking them down with a bunch of liquid wrench and letting it simmer for a couple hours. If that fails, dremel the screw heads into something you can grab with a vise grip and they'll be out in a jif (although you'll need new bolts)

a few updates on the state of my bikes:
z1 finally showed up at marzocchi yesterday, after 16 days in transit. usps says priority mail takes 2 days. :dead: . gonna get it rebuilt, $65 including new seals, and have xtra heavy springs waiting for it at home to prevent further bottomage
monster t also has xtra heavy springs. altho i don't think it even needs it, since was only using 150 or so mm of the 175 total with it on the evil. given that fs should distribute forces more evenly (no?) the current spring weights of medium in one leg, heavy in the other, should work ok methinks
i asked the canfield bros to ship the frame + rear wheel and the front wheel separately rather than waiting for them to meet somewhere between utah and colorado. so maybe by next weekend? hmm. in any case i'm not riding at all this weekend since i'm heading up to seattle to witness my cousin's high school graduation. :thumb: for that and free food courtesy of the parents.
addition: i've also managed to return every single bit of my hitch rack for a full refund. so basically i got to use the rack for a year, for free. i feel kind of bad, but i certainly spend enough money at rei otherwise to make up for it, i suppose

REI is there to be taken advantage of. My younger brother used to work at returns when he first started working there. If there was even a possibility you bought it at REI, you got a refund or store credit. People returning beat to sh!t stuff and 90% of the time getting store credit/refund.

It sounds like your Canfield is own it's way. If it shows up soon maybe you can build it up in time to race ski bowl at Mt. Hood sat.
I might go, hadn't thought about it for sure but probably should go.

REI is there to be taken advantage of. My younger brother used to work at returns when he first started working there. If there was even a possibility you bought it at REI, you got a refund or store credit. People returning beat to sh!t stuff and 90% of the time getting store credit/refund.
That's unethical. People who do that are responsible for a portion of the price the honest folks pay for stuff.
Maybe they do it because they can't afford to buy new stuff. Maybe, If they didn't do it, the prices would come down and they could afford to buy new stuff.

i agree, but that price is already paid up front, as rei isn't cheap. at least i'd rather that rei have its uniform, lenient policy instead of having some stores take only pristine returns, others taking anything...

Guy on board told us the whole group's networked wirelessly, so they can use the weapons on the other boats if the crew is disabled. My roommate at the time was thinking of joining up since they were gonna pay for Med Sch but talking to the dudes who's jobs were to paint the boat over and over again and polish the ring on the gun made him think he didn't really want to...

the wheels and cranks/guide showed up today! and i went and bought a cheapo set of $20 alivio v brake levers and ghetto rigged a hayes adapter to work with the avids, so i'm in business  . finally.
initial impressions, having not ridden it yet since the cable housing isn't ziptied down and the seatpost is uncut and about 200mm too long :D : it's visibly very long in wheelbase. standover clearance is adequate. the monster looks fitting. the chain is maybe a link short even tho i didn't take any links out, due to the long chainstays and the pulley system. the center of gravity looks very low. throughaxles in the rear are awesome x 3. race face's clamping mechanism seems like it is going to fail very quickly, and i am beginning to think it was a mistake spending $75 on it...
overall: mmmmmmm this is going to be fun! :thumb:

i'll have pics on tuesday. before then i'm going to swap out the rear brake (avid mech 6" for my hayes 8" being fixed on monday), the cassette (maybe go to 7 speed? :D hehe . 9-spd road cassette wasn't happening tho), the wheel (borrowed wheel with kenda 2.6 for my new/old wheel with minion 2.5), and the seatpost (raceface and giantseat to the evil, kalloy uno w/"normal" seat to the big bike). so have patience, the pics will come in a few days :D
unfortunately cambria bike says i'm out of luck as far as the race face goes b/c i cut it and it has scratches on it. not cool, since they suggested that very post out of the multitude of options available, after i told them this would be on a dh bike with a slanted seat tube... :dead:

Those Race Face seat posts, xyz's or something quickly start to spin in the clamp. They are great at first because the angle is infinitely adjustable but after a couple hard slams they wont hold their position. I've got two of them (didn't pay for them). I modified them by finding the angle I wanted then drilled and tapped a hole that uses a small allen bolt to lock them into position. Race Face fixed the problem, and then some with the Diabolus post, it's the beefiest on the market (I've got one on my dh).

did some wrenching on the canfield tonight, and now it feels 100% better than on the first ride. first off, i spaced the top roller all the way in (from the intermediate position it was at after my last dealings with it, and a far cry from the all-the-way-out position it initially was at). this screws up the chainline royally from the chainring to the top roller/sprocket, but it makes for a perfect chainline in the big cogs out back which i use 90% of the time.
second, i put on a 11-34 cassette. 34 >> 26 :D , and the short cage ultegra derailleur is taking up the slack just fine. i'm glad that the upper sprocket makes for a bike with next to no chain growth tho, or else i'd be screwed.
third, i put on the avalanche. it feels awesome, like melted butter. seriously, its whole feel, especially in the initial part of the stroke, is superb. its 550 lb-in spring feels somewhat softer than the 550 on the swinger 6 way. go figure.
finally, i put two firm springs in the monster, replacing the one busted and old firm, one "pro-wind" (read: lighter than medium) combo in there. i also found out that the preload had been dialed all the way in on one of the legs by one of my crackhead portland riding buddies. :D (zane! :dead:) hehe. no preload + firm springs == a smoother feel, much more like the avalanche.
the flat pedals already were on the bike from earlier this week, along with the wtb seat from the evil (with the evil getting the giant tioga). altogether these changes made the bike feel quite awesome, with a bottomless feel to the suspension, decent uphill gearing, and NO SKIPPING of the chain when putting the hammer down in large cogs in the rear
:thumb:
also, i am going to sell the extra springs and swinger shock. if anyone wants first dibs let me know here

i had absolutely no complaints about the canfield today. no skipping, 36x34t was an acceptable low gear, was even able to raise the seat a bit for the fire road sections. it felt good enough, in fact, that i did some new sections of trail that i hadn't before :thumb: and in doing so raise my personal drop height threshold by a few feet.

good use of flash in the group portrait, too. you really need to come up with a better navigation system for your galleries tho. :nono:

But can you tell the other place I used the flash the same way (But did abetter Job) ?
what's wrong with my navigation? If I think you're right, I might even fix it
Toshi
07-08-2004, 03:26 PM
nope, couldn't tell about the flash. which one? why navigation is bad: you force people to click repeatedly in the left bar, and they must move their mouse each time. having the behavior of clicking on the picture bringing up the next one in the gallery (a la ken and ari's sites, i think) and/or having arrows in the picture frame as in my site would be better.

your value judgments hinge on the fact that a user wants to look at all the pictures. Ipersonally don't like your navigation because I only look at pics for which the thumbnail looks like the pic will be cool, so I do a lot of extra clicking when the thumbnails are on a separate page. you are correct that clicking the pic to move on to the next one would provide the best of both worlds.
the other flash pic is the first one. I used the flash to fill some of the shadows on the subject's face
Toshi

at least make your thumbnails bigger then. i view all of them since i can't make heads or tails of the image from the thumbnail (pinkynail?) provided. :D

Hmmm...that WOULD be fun, but you know work and all. Stupid work. :mumble:
You guys do any riding on the weekend? I haven't actually been offroad in quite a while (read >1 year) so that could be fun, and of course I'm always up for some on road action.

We work too, but pretty close to campus, and we usually drive. If you're working close enough we might be able to swing it. I'm always up for the weekend, though lately Keith's been wandering around in the woods.... :monkey:

That sounds cool. What time are you guys planning on going. I have a birthday party I'm going to in the evening but other than that I'm free all day.
Also, what are the logistics? I don't have a car so if I could hitch a ride with someone that would be awesome.

I'm clear any time after 10, and I got wheels. Thad can make the final call on the time (and call my cell to tell me what that decision is, in case I don't check email before then). I'd be partial to meeting people n the square if that's cool w/everyone.

went to a good restaurant last night if any of you need date spots in Boston. Sonsie on newbury. Crab and brie stuffed mushroom appetizer was great, as was the pork tenderloin and poached peaches with blue cheese. Grilled salmon was good too but a bit too spicy (chili rubbed, etc). They have a good chocolate bread pudding for desert. overall... :thumb:
we'll see how well i can ride today after eating like that...

Continuing in the restaurant vein...I went to Il Bico in Kenmore square this past weekend. It's a little italian place with very good food at very reasonable prices. It's also always almost empty, which is weird. So people should try it to make sure it doesn't go out of business.

so i figured out the mystery of the spontaneous shifting while both pedaling and back-pedaling on the ride today. I thought it was the derailleur, but it turns out that I bent a link at some point when the chain fell off the granny gear. nothing a 12" c-wrench and a vice grip can't fix, though , since i didn't want to take another two links out of the chain... :mumble:

i think the pedal went through the window when the bike swung down, secured by its rear wheel after the skewer snapped.

last time this happened (a year ago) it was ~$300 :( . 509 989 1755 should work, except that i'm in the boonies with my parents now in coos bay. reception is spotty here. i moved out of my portland apartment on saturday so will be out of action for a while...
