haha, yeah, getting a job is probably out. i am vaguely mulling over the idea of working in a bookstore with one of my roommates from last year (dan chen for those who know him). but grad school in some random field would probably allow me to be just about as much of a bum, and would be something productive to boot.

ari, keith,

please tell me what you think of the new image page template:

http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/events%20and%20concerts/dho%20-%20la%20cenerentola%20-%20february%2014-15,%202003/

(or http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/HRO/ )

vs. a standard one from olde:

ahha, look what ari has hidden away on his site!

http://ariel.ath.cx/pictures/HRO%2099-00%20Pictures%20(horribly%20unorganized)/P2130038.JPG

you might have to cut 'n paste that url, since vbcode and parenthesis don't get along iirc

also, more comments on my further tweaked and revised layout are requested and appreciated:

http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/events%20and%20concerts/dho%20-%20la%20cenerentola%20-%20february%2014-15,%202003/Pages/0.html is an example of the new look

(what's changed since my last post: nav buttons moved outside, added link to top level, messed around with the style sheet for the link appearance/mouse-overs, and made the image matte consistent in its breadth and height)

Well...I went up to NH to go skiing today. The weather and conditions were pretty damn crappy. Visibility was about zero at the top of the mountain, and not much better at the base. The non-groomed runs were covered in a sheet of ice about 1/2" thick. Thus making it almost impossible to ski on because you would either stay on top and have no traction, or sink beneath and then not be able to move your feet. So I stuck to the groomed trails.

All in all though it was fun. Skiing sure beats sitting around in my room pretending I'm doing work.

(No pictures, sorry.)

i sense a contradiction here :D

i am glad to hear that it was fun. it turns out i had actual committments here besides just vague promises of "having work to do" (like bach soc  ) so i could not have gone.

Yeah...it is slightly contradictory.

Objectively it wasn't all that good a day b/c of the weather, but as I said a bad day skiing is better than a good day at work. :D

nice website! (assuming it is the one in your profile -- i have signature display turned off and can't be bothered to turn it on to check) those snowboarding shots are great, and i like your use of flash + really slow shutter on the concert pics. i might have to copy your technique. :D

that would be a fisheye lens. hey, guess what: ok, i'll tell you anyways... i bought a d30 today. :D so if you want to buy a fisheye lens, you can slap it on there and experiment with it  :D

sounds like you're going to be occupied for a while...

While you're waiting, you can check out the newest addition to my picture page. In an effort to simply fy the task of finding good content on my site, I built a little slideshow that feeds visitors randomly selected pics and lets them vote whether they like them or not. (I databased all my pics BTW) then, the prgm builds another slideshow based on the user selections. Don't try to stack the ballot box tho. Each IP address can only vote for a picture once (and I know how you voted)

http://www.phoben.com/photos

also check this out...

too bad the burglar bars had to be there

Toshi

that slideshow/voting deal is cool. two comments tho: please rig it so that pictures only come up once; also, those "nice" "seen better" graphics are hella ghetto, to borrow from high school-speak

:D (it's also funny that when i randomly visited the site a second time the picture that came up for "things" was of jack. and some insulation. but the categorization was questionable anyways.)

I could in theory rig it so pics only come up once... but the effort is hard to come by. and you don't like my graphocs? c'mon, I thought 15 min in photoshop was enough:p

Yay for spring skiing!!!

I went up to Loon yesterday....it was a beautiful day. I don't know what the exact temperature was but it must have been at least in the high 50s and very sunny. Consequently the snow was a tiny bit slushy, but there were no complaints coming from me!

also, it's not that heavy. just absurdly large. a smaller, more sane one is on its way tho -- especially for biking, i don't need to carry around the big lens all the time.

I was at the expo today at Hynes Convention Center for the marathon. They had a bunch of fitness stuff there, but the only biking-interesting thing was a display for PowerCranks (http://www.powercranks.com) .

Basically what it is is that the two cranks move independently of each other and both power the drivetrain. I got on the display bike and pedaled for a while. It was pretty weird. Supposedly it helps your pedal stroke, which I can see because you can't freeload at all. I would think it would take a while to get used to though.

Also...have you seen the sideways bike guy around Boston? I've seen him 3 or 4 times.

i just throw my s30 in the side pocket of my camelbak. for carrying my slr and paraphrenalia i use kinesis pouches:

BTW... I went back to the manual and figured out some of our flash issues (canon 10d in case anyone is interested):

1. Av mode is useless with the flash unless you set the flash sync (fn. 3) to 1/200 fixed. on auto it dials down the shutter to 1second+ and sets the flash accordingly

2. In Tv is set to use speeds less than 1/200, but for whatever reson it likes to open up the aperature all the way until the shutter is real slow. I would assume this makes the flash light less harsh.

Program and auto mode seem to take a middle ground usually setting the aperature at 4 and the shutter at 1/60 and compensating the flash accordingly. Unfortuntely you can't shift the program with the flash on.

BUT. the flash has a lot more kick in manual mode. You can set whatever you want and the camera will meter the flash accordingly. I got a fairly good exposure the long way across a 10'x20' room at 1/200 f11. The manual advertises a flash range of 25' with a 24mm lens at f3.5.

Toshi

sorta unrelated.... why won't the IMG tags show pics when the links are CGIs? It's sort of a pain to find the actual links to pics when the CGI can pull them out of my database for me.

i, too, want to do some riding tomorrow. however, i must be back at 6, clothed and showered, so i can't go riding with you after work. ah, yes, i think i'll go in the MORNING ahhahhaha

the img tags don't work since it searches for a .gif or .jpg extension. all other extensions need not apply, including weird strings of numbers fed to cgi scripts. a few of those shots of dave turned out nice.

update: fun fact of the day: xtr chainring bolts are apparently a few mm shorter than normal ones. thus the bolts i picked up after saturday's ride (when i lost two and bent my chainring) don't work. we shall see how the drivetrain likes to have 1.5 mm of free play this afternoon...

I don't see how it should matter with the flash-assist enabled. The flash was plenty strong to give good clear light. at any rate, It's likely that i'm just paranoid (or spoiled after using your prime for two weeks). You photo nerds. Now that the G5 is out, I can get me a G2 or G3 for cheep! Yay!

Do you guys have any digitals that you've grown out of that you'd sell me?

Toshi

off-camera flash is fun! imagine the night ride possibilities with this. specifically, imagine a wallride with the flash at the bottom of the wall, with a huge shadow extending up the wall... mmm :D

The two crowns, when properly supported with high-density polymer foam bumpers, increase both the stiffness and inertia of the bike. This improves race performance through increased confidence and endurance gained while running with your useless bicycle strapped to your back.

BTW, anyone up for a apres work ride?

addition: i sent the 28mm in for service today. it was REALLY loose and flopping about, and is visibly soft in the lower right corner (lower left in this vertical pic):

Thanks for the tip also...I hadn't been checking Apple's site lately since I'm way over here.

I really want to go to Rye. Not so much to ride (I don't think I'd be great there on my bike) but mostly to play with my camera. I work nights though, and usually sleep all day. If you ever go on a Thursday or a Saturday I might be able.

Speaking of work...I've driven past half the good riding spots in this state in the past month, all without having my bike on me. I was in Lynn this morning. Otis, Wampi. Doing a good 1000 - 1800 miles a week. I need a roof rack dammit.

I get 3fps with the canon 10d up to about 9 shots (on high res).

I was using toshi's speedlite 240ex (I think I got the model # right, toshi will undoubtedly correct me if I am wrong). With that flash, you only can get a four flash burst in the best case so I think I shot 1/125 ~f6 and I would guess that I used ISO of 800 to keep the draw on the flash low and squeeze the most shots out of it... I would have liked to used faster shutter, and ISO 400.

I kept the lens on wide (24mm) so I didn't have to pan too much, and the rest I put together in photoshop (a bit too hastily... one splice was really obvious). I sharpened it pretty heavily so the rider would stand out a bit more.

Toshi
07-21-2003, 06:46 PM
420ex, three shots at 3fps usually is what the flash will do before not firing. keith uses slow lenses (a 3.5-4.5 zoom), i use fast lenses (2.8, 1.8, 1.4, 2.0 primes)

fells ride, sunday morning. meet at 9:30 in front of mather, or 10 am at the fells, NOT at sheepfold but rather at the usual parking lot to the left (west) of governor's road on south border road.

I'll talk to people at work, we'll see.

On another note, I'm going to Killington with a chick I work with on Monday. Got free shop passes. Should be a good time, even if it is a long drive :p.

i just realized that i only have two chainring bolts (out of four) for the dbr. plus it will be raining. might have to scratch this ride. :dead:

(the flat bars are now off the evil again. i tried it for two days of riding, and couldn't get used to it. protapers are where it's at. still.)

as consolation, i offer up this gallery: http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/miscellaneous/best%20of%20the%20summer%20-%20summer%202003/

since we've decided that riding is no longer important, you should check out my picws from the Phish festiveal:

how do you link directly to your pics from non-humba galleries? i figured it out for those, but how do you do that for this one, for example?

you'd have to know the actual location and filename of the photo, which generally I don't know off the top of my head because I wrote a script that automatically insterts them in my database. the "binpic" number is the unique ID of the photo in the database, which is how I find them, but for those wyho do not sit at my computer, all of the non-humba photos reside in: www.phoben.com/photos/people_and_places/

or /photos/things

and all the 2003 photos are in a subfolder with that name. The directories are viewable fromm the web if you feel so inclined, and photos are archived in folders by date, year-first.

I realized that I've been really selfish in the voting aspect of my photo galleries, so I added a little instant gratification. Now each photo window has a little box that tells how many votes a photo has gotten and what percentage of people liked it. If I did it right, it should also change to reflect your votes (assuming you haven't already voted for a pic in the past). pics with no votes start at 50% as a result of a little glitch in the math that the script does, but it seems fair so I left it that way.

check it out:

Hey toshi do you do any afternoon rides in the fells? None of this 930am stuff, I'm talking 5 in the afternoon, just after waking up :D I'll IM you next time I see you on. We ought to do the white trail, that way I can show off as much as possible. Then there's always the rock circuit trail, if you wanna stop at the hospital on the way home ;)

it was ok. some cheap gags (such as dressing up as a sailor and claiming he was trying to find the worcester boat show), but his bush impression was right on. :D

Hehe, what I said was actually a lie. That picture is from Monday, when I was at Killington. I slipped off my pedal from the mud and it hit me in the back of my ankle.

so my 2002 z1 fr is now at 80mm of extra-firm and extra-damped travel. it is sweet. thanks, keith. (some modifications of parts, along with a whole stack of negative springs, were necessitated by the travel change.)

in other news, my web server is going to be unplugged in about half an hour, and it will be living in my car as i go on a road trip until about sept 16. then it, and all of this thread's pictures that are linked from it, should reappear on the net, hosted from my parents' fiber optic  connection in washington. until then, i bid you all adieu

SwisSlesS

Why in the world do your parents have a fiber optic connection?

Toshi
09-12-2003, 04:42 PM
so i'm back home. parents have a fiber optic connection since the county power and utility outfit decided it would be fun to wire the whole county for fiber optics. cool, eh?

http://www.gcpud.org/zipp/

of course they are moving in about 2 weeks (after 4 years here -- we seem to move every 4 years, hmm), so i and my server are losing this lovely connection. we might be renting a fraction of a t1 at the new place, but it will be slower and more expensive.

as for da road trip, it was 7345 miles, 27 days... during that time, i raced at platekill (mountaincross, got dead last :D ), rode at a few national and state parks, and did lots of sightseeing and picture-snapping. the pics will take a few days to sort out, but will surface soon enough. time to eat and sleep now

(national parks seen: acadia, great smoky mountains, shenendoa, mammoth cave, carlsbad caverns, white sand [natl monument, not park, close enough], guadalupe mountains, saguaro, grand canyon, capitol reef, bryce canyon, zion, arches, canyonlands. yup, got my money's worth out of my parks pass hehe)

ok, trip pics are up:

7345 miles of america (http://harvard03.ath.cx/images/trips/7345%20miles%20of%20america%20-%20summer%202003/)

also note that all pics in this thread will be broken once again until october 16, when i return from japan. my parents are moving while i'm over there, and i don't have any faith that they'll set up my webserver in its new home until i return myself

Toshi

so i am in japan. life is good and i have eaten tempura, udon, oden, and shabu shabu, just to name some highlights. :D i have also done some riding, amazingly enough.

in karuizawa i was basically marooned for a few days as my grandparents played golf, so a bike was rented and i tooled around town on it. with a covered chain, handlebar basket, really short cranks and three speed internal hub it was no speed machine, but i did manage to wheelie, bunnyhop, and ride along a curb a la tufts on it. :) fun.

also, i spied a nice kona roast, sporting a uncomfortable looking sella italia flite saddle, owned by a young guy who runs an outdoor-wear shop in karuizawa. now i am back in tokyo, however, and no riding looms in the future. however, i will be going to kyoto, nagasaki, yokohama, and morioka in the next two weeks, so perhaps something interesting, even with wheels, will turn up in the upcoming days

cheers, y'all
