Ari and I went out for a tasty 30 miles to Walden pond. Ari also got acquainted with the g2 while I fixed a flat here (http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~berkoben/pics/humba/trail/09-01-02/FrameSet.htm)

Will I hate myself (or the bike) if I buy this guy for the front of the Evil, to be laced up to the hypothetical Z1 or Shiver SC?

Well you might be unhappy if you lace your wheel directly to your fork... you'd have to drill holes in the fork for the spokes and stuff...
but seriously, you're not going to break it, but it'll be yellow. I think you should order parts and build your own wheel. It's much more satisfying.

How is the weight, tho? The quoted figure is 1070g for the 20 mm axle version (one can convert between the two versions with a $25 kit, according to Barry / Pezzo33). Is that obscene?

well, 1070 sounds a bit heavy for a front wheel, (back wheels usually hover around 1000) but you're riding a 13" frame that weighs six pounds... you're not going to notice.
BTW, what's up with the funky new font?

Ah, I'm going for it. Which means that I'm going for the Shiver SC come tomorrow, unless anyone has final thoughts to dissuade me. :D
UPDATE: Excel Sports was out of stock -- they only had one Deemax, but some flaw in their website allowed three of us to order it. This is good, upon reflection, since it would be odd to have a front wheel that's heavier than my back. ;) And because of this, I'm rethinking on the fork, too. I'll decide by this afternoon.
I don't know what you're talking about with the font, on the other hand. What are you talkin' about? Willis? :dead:
New pics for the bored: car hunting (http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~tjclark/car%20hunting%20in%20wenatchee%20-%20september%202002/) and 4x4ing in the hills (http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~tjclark/off the beaten track - september 2002/) (replete with qtvr panoramas :D ).
That VehiCROSS is cool. dw has one, I think. My parents are not really considering it, tho -- 2 doors is 2 too few in their opinion.

New car plan: driving is out, and apparently so is the Pathfinder. After a hard day's work of scoping out the current crop of mini-utes (Honda CR-V, Mazda Tribute, Subaru Forester) we have come to the conclusion that the Pathfinder is really what my mom wants to ferry her plants from the nursery to the back yard. With this source of wheels now unavailable to me, it's now my task to find a car on the east coast for <=$12k. It must be able to get to the ski areas without me dying (so no Z, however appealing they remain :( ;) ), but that's the only restriction. Insurance should be reasonable, too, but that probably won't be a problem with this class. So fire away; my ears are pealed.
Oh yeah, and go riding with Alex. And take pics with that new camera. http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31174

I've always been a fan of Subaru myself. They make good stuff. Usually mini-SUVs look like cartoon cars, but the Subaru seems to get around that.

But they're sloow, no? I've only driven a Legacy Wagon from 1998ish, and its acceleration was quite tepid. :eek: I don't want to die while merging. :dead: Or making unsafe passes on 2-lane roads, more likely.

<=$12k... that's not even a challenge. The challenge is getting one lined up so It's waiting for you when you get here;)
... and if you're into the AWD wagon thing, I think my uncle might be able to help you out with a loaded volvo 850

haha, right. The AWD mini-ute deal was for my mom's benefit. I have no such restrictions, altho not having to put on chains is a plus. And the wagon restriction isn't solid either. Basically, nothing is ruled out except for the Z. My mother was aghast when my father suggested it. ;)

Possibilities so far:
1996 Honda Accord wagon. '98 was the generation change after all. Auto only. :(
1996-1997ish Nissan 240SX. Hey, it's not a Z! ;) I'm not sure about the snow-worthiness of this bad boy tho. This one must be ruled out for impracticality, altho it would be fun with rear wheel drive and a stick shift.
1996 Toyota Camry wagon. Like Keith's. Whoa. No manual available tho. :(
1996 Volkswagen Passat wagon. TDI version perhaps. :D It comes in manual! As does the VR6 gas version. hmmmm, this is looking to be the leader
1993 Volkswagen Eurovan. (!) Slow as all get out. Manual! A box on wheels, I like the concept... and cheap, too (they weren't imported between 1993 and 1999, so this is the latest model that is under the line)
1993 Volvo 240 wagon. Ugly as sin. Sturdy, according to some. Solid. Comes in manual, but (or maybe as a plus?) is rear wheel drive.
Now for the weird options that I skipped on my first run through of the manufacturers:
1992 Audi 100 Quattro wagon. More Germanic than VW, despite the Audi Group owning them all. ;) Offers the promise of a manual, V6, awd, leather, and economy. Old. Randall Lucas had one of these... maybe I should ask him about it. </think aloud> Probably expensive to repair.
1991 Audi V8. Quattro, manual. Old, promising, but not a wagon. hmmph. But if I were to get a sedan, this one would be horribly impractical -- an Accord would be a much more rational car.
1998 Ford Contour SVT sedan. Manual, racy V6, front wheel drive. Very attractive, despite being a domestic. :eek: :D Probably the most attractive of the sedans, and late model as well.
1995-1996ish Subaru SVX. Auto only, which was this sport model's critical shortcoming, but it would be fun to drive (3.3 boxer 6) yet decent in the snow (awd).
1996 Subaru Legacy wagon. Auto, and slow. But awd and commonplace.
1998 Subaru Impreza wagon. Manual, not as slow, and awd, but kind of ugly and small.

update: the Pathfinder is back in the running. My mom is fickle -- wants a new car now. Time to go test driving.
Back from test driving now. None were impressive. So the plan is back to her keeping the Pathfinder and me picking something up. Passat wagon, here we come. Perhaps.

I get the feeling that this might just all come out in the wash...
no one likes the police because they feel that their power makes them arbitrary and corrupt... All it takes to make a good cop is accountability. If RM shows the community why he made the decision... I mean really shows us, more than just saying they were undemining the quality of the boards without providing good examples, etc. then everything will be ok. But if he leaves things the way they are, this board is going to get hurt bad. I understand that he wants the site to be more serious, but lets face it... it 's getting way out of hand
Toshi
09-03-2002, 09:51 PM
Ah, you're right. I won't care tomorrow, or even after dinner. But I know that I've been losing interest in the board's topics steadily over the past few months -- that my post count and rate is still as high as it is only shows how hideously idle I was this summer / how often my bikes were out of commission. (But if I can parlay my "research" into grad school / med school, then it was all worth it. :D )
The car search continues. It's very undecided whether I will get a car out east, or my mom will get a car here, or ... we test drove a bunch of rides today (XTerra, CR-Vs of two years, Tribute, Escape) and emerged without a clear favorite. Or even a favorite at all. They all are uninspiring and horribly overpriced (often $3k over the market value according to edmunds.com). I still haven't ordered that fork, either.

Toshi just trying to catch up with u. I see u bogued out on the Capitol run that's too bad meeting N.W. monkeys would have been worth the trip but the trails arent all that. Anyways if your bike is a concern for some of the terrain but u wanna catch a good ride from Moses Hole get yourself to Wenatchee/Cashmere and ride Devils Gulch. U can ride it as an out n back or ride the forest road up and go down that way(i like it that way nice views etc.)p.m. me for info if u want. The trail for the most part is baby butt smooth fast and fun. Lata.

Yes there is a ski club. I cofounded it senior year, though I didn't do that much work. It's run by Chris Townsend in Pfoho. And it is cooler than the snowboard crew.
Definitely try the xcream 9's. I liked them better than the 8's. More of a freeride ski.

I decided to not be wasteful, and just ordered a gunmetal grey 2002 Z1 Freeride in 9 mm through Marzocchi. $256 is not too shabby for a brand new Z1, altho it doesn't have the fresh allure of the other options. Why I went for it is because I couldn't justify getting a 9 mm 2003 Z1 (would have to go 20 mm, again, to make it worthwhile) and couldn't in good conscience let a good wheel go to waste by getting the Shiver SC. This is assuming that the Z1 MCR + wheel that Rob sent really did arrive in one piece. Ari, any updates? :D

Never fear! I thought that also, but it's not true!
Look in /etc/httpd/
there should be a file called httpd.conf.applesaved or something like that. 10.2 doesn't overwrite it, it just moves it.

Also, does anyone want to go urban riding this lovely and blistering hot evening? (I do! I do!)
I guess no one wanted to go. <sniff> Anyways, I ordered a wonderfully cheap ($89!) Manitou SX fork from Pricepoint for the DBR. Yes, you heard it right, I have finally given up all hope that Rob's Z1 and wheel might make it safely to my hands. It really is quite infuriating that I would have had the fork and wheel had he not been sketchy -- if he had shipped it on time, I would have still been in Dewolfe to receive it. :angry: But chalk this one up to experience... an expensive experience, alas. Keith, what price do you think you could land me on a XT disc / Sun Singletrack front wheel? Having one that matches the rear wheel would be nifty, and I'm a wheel short as of now. Thanks

Tonight's urban ride was a mixed bag. On the upside, there was no terrorist activity in downtown Boston, as far as I could tell, and furthermore no one died. On the downside, Craig crashed badly and gave himself a concussion. About two minutes after crashing he became unconscious briefly, followed by mild disorientation. This was enough to get me to call 911. The EMTs were quick to arrive, yet by the time they arrived he was well enough that they didn't feel the need to bring him in to a hospital. Nevertheless we stopped by at UHS on the way back, and there lies the unfortunate Mr. Hetherington for the night.

Anyone feel up for an urban ride tomorrow night? I'd build up the DBR and go trail riding, except I don't feel like it. :D And I'd have to swap the tire onto Keith's beater wheel, rig up some front brakes... all in all it's more effort than it's worth. And either of my two forks should be in my paws very shortly. Let's go on an early urban ride. How about 8 pm departure for now? That way, if anyone breaks themselves, we can be sure to be able to catch the T back. ;)

I'm thinking tonight. Classes start tomorrow, so tonight is the last truly free night for a while. :D
update: I'm actually thinking that it looks much too nasty to go riding on slick concrete and granite. I'm going to sit around my room and work on my bikes instead.
further update: Anyone up for a short and late ride around the athletic complex area? I want to work on manuals, and there are nice pieces of concrete all around to bunnyhop over (Keith).

Unfortunately, no. I bought another fork (beyond the Zoke crash replacement Z1) for the xc bike. Pricepoint. $89. A good deal, but still annoying, especially since I'm still waiting on a disc wheel (being built by webcyclery) to go on the Evil.

I agree. Howdy! :dancing:
For those of you lazy humba people :p, we had a nice 25-30 mile ride this morning. (I don't know the exact distance because my computer conked out three miles into the ride. I think the batteries inside the transmitter unit died. Is that possible? I assume it has batteries, or is it self powered by the magnetic field?)
Update: Upon closer inspection it is indeed a battery. It's a little one that's the same diameter as a AAA battery, but about half as long. Unfortunately I don't have a battery tester, so I'm can't tell if it's dead or not. I guess I'll take a trip to Radio Shack today.

alright, so it wasn't the battery. I did some further tests and found out that for some reason the range of the transmitter just died. If I spin the wheel and hold the display unit right next to the transmitter on my fork then it reads just fine. It works just fine from a little distance away also, but when I move it just a little farther (say, to my handle bars where the display is supposed to be mounted) then it just stops getting the signal.
It's not even that the battery is dying because I just got a fresh one from Radio Shack and the same thing happens.
any ideas people?

Today, after my typically hellish Monday (lab scheduled for 6-11 -- Keirse and I got out at 9 :dead: ) in which I had no time to pry open small boxes, I opened it up, and lo and behold, not only is there a chainring, but there is a tool. There is a god after all. :eek: :D

As if there were not enough from this morning, I'm back with more pictures: foosball (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/miscellaneous/foosball - october 2002/) (and a nice sunset, as frisbee followed). There's a house one-day tournament this Thursday, btw: 10 pm at the foosball tables, and email fili@fas if you want to play. Keith, come and try your hand. :D

Tony Ellsworth is not supposed to be too personable. If you buy used, it's irrelevant (plus, _this_ biking season is about done ;) ) tho. The bikes are supposed to be beautiful and well-designed, if inadvertently. dw in particular likes to say how the bikes work well despite all that Ellsworth writes about "instant center tracking" and all that jazz. Have you looked at the Turners? They had a good rep on this board.

So on this mornings ride we worked on contact drills. first it was body contact - gently elbowing the other person in the shoulder or in the hip while both of you maintain riding in a straight line. Then it got really scary because we did wheel contact. We were supposed to ride up and touch the side of our front wheel to the side of their rear wheel. It was really weird to do because my self preservation instincts kept telling me to pull away.

For those of you wondering about the pgp nonsense, I was keeping the news concealed: I now have another computer, thanks to being a wjh ua. Running OS X 10.1 and soon with a capacious hard drive, it is plugged in upstairs (so can stay on all night without bothering me!) and will make the perfect server for both my website, and maybe some semi-official humba business, should that ever materialize. Please note that i plan to take it with me when I graduate, however, so don't get too familiar with it ;) .
Tech geek specs:
Power Computing PowerCenter Pro 180 (yes, it's a Mac clone from around 1997-1998).
- 180 MHz 604e, 60 MHz bus, which was scary-fast back in the day
- 352 MB RAM (96 now, + 256 by Wed)
- 38 GB worth of hard drive (2 + 36.4 by Wed)
- OS X 10.1.5 -- it can't run Jaguar, but I'm amazed that it even installed and booted 10.0 and 10.1 (thanks to XPostFacto, as non-G3 machines are not officially supported)
- horrible 2 MB built in video, (free) 17" Dell monitor, which don't matter at all since it will be a server
Right now it's only serving up a skeleton version of my site at http://tjclark-2.ath.cx/ , but when the new hard drive gets in, I'm going to swap the two computers' addresses (to have tjclark.ath.cx point to the PCC, tjclark-2 to the G4). Another cool thing about it besides its upstairs location is that it's still registered in netconnect to some lab in wjh, so I can't get in trouble even if it draws a lot of traffic. :D
Please check out its performance (or lack thereof) at http://tjclark-2.ath.cx/ and report any complaints to me.

Who is planning on riding tomorrow, besides Keith? I am lazy (played tennis today), tired (no sleep this week thanks to double-header midterms yesterday morning), and injured (right wrist, still messed up from way back when), so I don't think I will ride.

Thanks, Denis! :D The Mendelssohn that we played was the overture + other bits (including the wedding march, for better or worse) from A Midsummer Night's Dream. I would know what we played better except that I only played in the Mahler (http://tjclark.ath.cx/music/October 25 HRO concert/).

i stop riding when it gets cold. solves the problem well, eh. actually, i haven't been riding the evil much because of the excessive sag, but should i ever motivate myself to go to ace and pick up zee fork oil... ah, maybe in 20 min :D

ah but the fat tires would kick up even more of the slush. snow == good, slush == bad. (i didn't ride by choice -- i had to go to the med school for a meeting and didn't have the time or the patience for the m2.)

Which of course, raises the age old question of, if you have a bike and then you switch the frame, and then you switch the fork, is it still the same bike?

Actually, that was during the crisis that was averted just before the start of the Dvorak. The stand next to mine came on stage to start the second half and their music wasn't there. So we were all looking all over for it and after a couple sort of nerve racking minutes it was found.
OH..and what's with all the Black and White now?

ah ok. that story sounds plausible enough. i guess. :D
the black and white is partly due to the sucky nature of last night due to the concert and other reasons, and partially because my flash was turned down really low, so many pictures were underexposed. grabbing one of the channels was the only way to save them, so i applied the same treatment (green or red channels) to all of the pics from yesterday for consistency.

hi guys,
merry xmas-2days! what's on my mind: i'm thinking about joining the peace corps (http://www.peacecorps.org/) if the japan plans don't work out. is this stupid? do you know anyone who has done it? (i had a teacher in high school who did it, and blamed poor living conditions for her health problems to that day. but she was kind of a nut.)
also, i realized that the ghetto manitou-nice z1 fork swap between the plastic frame and the evil wouldn't quite work out, namely because the manitou has funny/non-standard disc mounts, and i have serious doubts that i could find a hayes 8" adaptor for them. and i am NOT going to run an 8" on the rear and a v on the front of the evil. :D once was enough for that experiment. however, the z1 is a great trail fork and has v-brake posts so would be perfect on the plastic frame.
what then for the evil? solution: 2003 marzocchi dj3. cheap, normal disc mounts, and well suited in purpose to the evil, which we have determined by now to be less than ideal as a trail bike. my question now is: do you (keith) know of places to buy this fork cheaply? go-ride offers $259 with a $30 store credit... what was that place from which you bought your atom race, or whatever your blue fork is?
the v-brakes made me fall! :dead:

i got it from www.impulsecycling.com Fulton helped me out. Unfortunately the website seens to be in flux at the moment. you might want to message fulton directly.
In other news... my website (well actually only the humba page at the moment) is running off of a new script that allows me to administer all of the configs for all the site's pages from a single text file. Right now it only fills in the blanks in a skeleton page (which could essentially build anthing from a template page if I wanted to keep the basic layout the same), but the architecture allows for building up pages from scratch, or I guess on request, if I ever feel the masochistic need to code that.
...not that anyone cares.
Toshi
12-23-2002, 07:11 PM
ah, thanks for the tip. impulse, eh. why is this template-config business a good thing? will it let you include ad banners on every page? :D

Ha. (Although, In theory yes). The advantage is that in order to change things on the page, I don't have to find the page four directories deep in the site and recode the HTML. I can just change a couple of lines in a text file and get the same result. The main advantage is when you want to change something that affects a lot of pages. With this architecture you can do it by changing one thing instead of going into each page and changing it by hand.
Here's what the config page looks like (it's pretty simple right now):
RULES:
1. page and tag identifiers cannot have spaces, and must immediately follow their marker tags without spaces
2. tag identifiers mut have their modifier (if any) separated by ' ' - = or ;
3. names must be made of numbers and letters only.
4. words cannot be broken by page breaks
#!~DEFAULT
error_path = "D:/web/shared/error/"
error_URL_path = "/shared/error/"
default_img = "default.jpg"

default_memo = "errmem.txt"

path="D:/web/admin/"

!~LIST!~
path="D:/web/admin/"

every page will have its own little text block, and some things can be shared like "STYLE" or "DEFAULT". when I want to change the style (once I implement it) I just change one or two lines. and if I have to change something that requires me to deal with every page's little text block, I can just use the text replace command in notepad. all of the SRC file point to lists or text files that are easily edited and interchanged. the script parses the files and inserts them into the page as appropriate.

yeah...lots of neat stuff. I also see that apple is entering into the browser war world. (There were lots of rumors about this floating around.) I'm a little confused about "iLife" though. It seems that if they are offering iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie for free, then what's the point?
I also see that Apple has changed its font. (See the "apple.com" after the new hardward ads.) Speaking of hardware...the 17" PowerBook.... :thumb: <drool>

I actually think its just more of a marketing thing. According to the website all new computers will be coming with a copy of iLife, so its just a matter of emphasizing the fact that they are so interconnected now.
