glad the ride was cool. Toshi, as far as the food... we just need food for 1 dinner 2 breakfasts and 1or 2 lunches. I'm not picky at all what you buy. There is water on site, so you don't have to buy it. I'm sure you can get everything in a backpack. I'll can come by after work and then we can pack up and go.

mwhahaha, new avatars for me and Ari. :thumb: :D In other news, the Z1 still hasn't reached the guy who I traded the Super T to, he shipped the wheel off to the wrong person  so it's not here either, and finally his whole bike, Super T and all, was stolen yesterday. To round out this portion of bad news, I also must relate that I was a total dunce just half an hour ago, pouring water all over the table and dropping my salad on the ground. :(

I need food. But first, the pics: http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/killington/index.html . There are several movies at the end, including one of me doing an entire slalom run. The amateurs lined up randomly, so the fact that I was behind in this run is irrelevant, as the guy could have been an expert or sport rider (or the one beginner who beat me  ). Results: Keith raced beginner 20-29 xc and placed 4th, despite breaking his chain midway through the second 4 mile lap. Keith deserves props for that. Unfortunately I have no visual evidence of his racing since the batteries were used up on endless sequence shots on the dual course. As for me, I placed 2nd in beginner 20-29 slalom, despite my rigid fork. :D All in all, it was a strong showing for HUMBA/"Team Harvard" (coined by the announcer as "Keith Biscoben" finished the race). :thumb:
List of monkeys met or remet: Jester, obiwan-f1moto, ska todd, skiba, lil' skiba, eastcoastzigzag. Possibly more.

[pasted from an im, where I always use lowercase]
i just about died 20 minutes ago. the study i'm doing had a subject cancel today, so i went into the hospital for no reason. as a result, while riding home i was a bit annoyed. the bright idea came upon me to ride to watertown, since so many celebrities live there; i rode there, and it was all good at this point. however, on the way back, at that horrible interchange where you choose to go to newton/boston/cambridge, somehow i ended up on the car portion of storrow drive. i had a strange feeling that i was about to get run over, and judging by the cars that honked and screeched by, i wasn't alone in feeling that way. :-/ ahhhhhhhh
Ari, when you ride that way, what side of the road do you stick on?

hmm...I'm not quite sure which intersection you're talking about. Is it the one where Mt. Auburn hits Fresh Pond Pkwy?
Toshi

It's where you choose to either go to Newton, on Storrow, or on Mem drive.

Just avoid the choices that have the big "CARS ONLY" signs above them

I didn't see any of those (very noticeable) signs, I swear. And there was no way to get to the path on the other side, short of crossing all the traffic and scaling a fence.

Coming in from downtown? When I go out to watertown I just ride mt. auburn the whole way (and then cut onto Trapelo if I'm going to wheel works or something.) The only sort of sketcy intersection is at mt. auburn and fresh pond. I never get down to the river area.

Cool. Yes, it will be a quick loop. But I think I'm going to do two laps. Although I swore way back in the day that I wouldn't race xc ever again, I think I want to try my hand at a beginner race sometime soon...

The loop itself was fine. On the way back I rode the curb by the Tufts gym as usual. Today I took it much faster than before, however, and when my tires slipped to the right my balance was overcome, so I skidded on the pavement a few feet. Ow.
Anyways, here are the pics from this morning's ride:

get the der hanger fixed (I bent it this morning), and here's my rant to toshi about how the dude at ace sucked:

WTGPhoben: I got it fixed
WTGPhoben: so yes
Murahachibu jin: cool. tyler?
WTGPhoben: nah... ace
WTGPhoben: and funny thing about it...
WTGPhoben: I go to the dude (clearly the low man on the totem pole)
WTGPhoben: and tell him exactly what's wrong...
WTGPhoben: takes the bike in the shop...
WTGPhoben: looks at it quizzically for five min...
WTGPhoben: then asks some other dude what to do
WTGPhoben: the other dude does it for him
WTGPhoben: and the nhe comes up to me after and tries to chastize me for bending it telling me that next time I'm gonna need a new swingarm...
WTGPhoben: but he calls it a "triancle"
WTGPhoben: I proceeded to correct him on the price he quoted me for the swingarm:-)
Murahachibu jin: haha. it is 250, no?
WTGPhoben: he said 300
WTGPhoben: I said 250
Murahachibu jin: soo, what happened?
WTGPhoben: well it was $10, I paid him, and left thinking he was a tool
WTGPhoben: I kinda wanted to walk into the shop and show him how to do it myself... but I don't think he would have appreciated it

Riding through the rain was kind of fun, actually. I had my first real study experience today (put on electrodes and watched eeg recording before and after transcranial magnetic stimulation) and had to pick up a brake adaptor from Ace, so had plenty of opportunity to get wet. :D

if I've ever seen a blown seal, that's it. They're "supposed" to be easy to replace, but I've never succeeded in removing them, and you hav to order the part anyway. It's brobly easier to just send it to cali.

I actually just called Marzocchi, and they will throw in a new stanchion for fiddy dollah. So this fork will be costing me some money (and where is my Z1, ummbikes? ) but will be functional -- for strictly xc riding unless the Z1 never shows -- in the near future.

UPDATE: The ploy on digitaletailer.com...
you have to call them to give them the security code on your credit card (most websites have you type it in with your order), and afterward they get into a conversation with you (he was very polite) and try to sell you an extended warranty. I politely declined and I should have the camera early next week.

Ok, the objection period is officially over. 9 pm, meeting in front of 20 dewolfe st. (off of mt. auburn, about 5 blocks from harvard sq towards central.)
other notes: Ari, I'll really give you back that cd tonight :D . Also, because the sync was awful on that Thomas Crown clip (I finally looked at it) I am ripping the whole DVD now. mwahaha, the MPAA would kill me...
Ok, I'm about to start rendering that clip, er, movie, so won't be on the monkey until late tonight. So if you're going to be late for the ride, call me. 617 905 6399.
As per usual, I'm bailing. I'm still at work, and it looks like that situation will lilkely not change for a while. I'll probably be in really early tomorrow morning too.

Sorry, I'm a no go for tonight for a few reasons.
1) it's my roommates birthday (starting at midnight) so we have to prepare
2) I have some stuff to do (cleaning, preparing menu, etc.) (yes, I'm a domestic) before Abby gets home on friday. :D
3) I managed to break my chain while riding home from the grocery store. yep, that's right. I got 1 block away from Star and the chain broke. I wasn't even shifting. So I got to walk the rest of the way home. Seeing as there are already 2 or 3 links missing after breaking a few weeks ago at the fells, I don't know if I can ride it with more missing. So it looks like it's time for a new chain.

Toshi-what was the story with the trip to Beverly?
Toshi
08-16-2002, 12:13 AM
I had my first trumpet lesson in over a year. The teacher lives out in Danvers, so I took the commuter rail out to Beverly and was picked up. Late, thus the picture of my watch, which incidentally was snapped just as the teacher drove up. The lesson itself was wonderful -- 3.5 hours, no charge, and she even bought me lunch after taking pity on my food situation for the day (I had orange juice for breakfast, and nothing else). :D :thumb: The instruction was wonderful, too, and I think it will help me to improve my playing, which has been pretty stagnant since arriving here three years ago. Keith, you may be interested in this: no longer will I play with "tight corners," but instead will concentrate on pulling the lower lip that lies within the mouthpiece upwards and inwards while keeping the jaw lowered (both back at the molars and in front). It feels weird, but I can articulate much more cleanly and my tone has more substance now.

Walking by ABP tonight I saw a guy watching chess. Nothing remarkable there, no? Well, he was wearing a Durango Mountain Bike Camp jersey. Seeing that I attended said camp in '96, I talked to the guy after watching a rather inept chess game. It turns out he, one Dan Stephen, just moved here and is looking for places to ride. Ever eager to spread the Ridemonkey word, I pointed him to here, this forum in particular. So if you are Dan Stephen, register, say hi, and go to www.nemba.org to find the local trails in this area. :thumb:

Not to spawn a whole thread about geekery, but I have to second Apache. IIS is nice & all, but from a security standpoint it requires a more careful admin than Apache. That's all I'll say about that.

no... It is still four stroke. The diff is that there is an add on in these engines that provides an extremely powerful and precise series of electric bursts to the solenoids in the injectors such that turing a single injection phase of a few miliseconds, the injector can give 3-5 small shots of fuel to the cylinder instead of one large shot. Anyway, here's today's life update: I watched two total knee replacements in the OR this morning. The smell of burnt flesh is disgusting (its burnt by the cauterizing blade), especially on the second subject, who was a very fat man; the fat must smell worse when burned.
Over the weekend, in addition to doing garden work for my mom -- ask me how I feel about worthless non-opium producing ;) poppy plants sometime -- I had the ol' discussion about cars with my parents. And now it's agreed that I'm going to bring the Pathfinder out over intersession. Garden street? There's a big sign on the office building on Bow st. (across from the tux place) that says "Harvard parking Services, 2nd floor." I went up there one day and the lady said that I had to come in on Sept. 9th and get a permit to park in Soldiers field park. She said it was $900. Is that right?!?! That's ridiculous! Also, do you have to get any sort of "Cambridge" permit or whatnot to park on the street or in harvard parking lots?

I took a lesson last year which just opened my eyes (of course, it might have been a result of my last having taken a lesson a decade before) to the wonders of carving, and I truly felt that I was trying to get my skis to do something beyond their ability. Or would it be abilities? Whatever, skis as singular as far as this thread is concerned.
These are the skis that ohio recommended (I think -- I might be wrong): Salomon Scream 8 (http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?productId=47527583&storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1). Actually, I think he said "x scream 9" but I can't find that on REI.

I think that the Soldiers lot/building is the one in which Keith parks. In other words, it's the one across the river at the b-school. I'll let the omniscient Keith answer or make up handwavey physics arguments to ... oops, where was I?
Skiing is fun. humba can become a ski club of sorts after the horrific first semester gets over, eh? Is there a real ski club anyway? I was under the impression that there was only a snowboarding club. And we can't hang with _those_ people. :dead:

Toshi, remember that Evil Imperial you put in my basement..........
So about the parking: Yes, the lot and the garage are at the b-school. I was in the garage, which is prettysweet except that its far away. The street parking depends upon the permit, but it's usually somewhere in the river house area. I think those permits are hard to get, tho. With any harvard permit, you can park in most harvard spaces (even if they're not the ones you have permits for) between fri afternoon and sun night.

I don't think there's a ski club. There's a ski team, but no club.
So is the only difference between the lot and the garage is that the garage is inside? is that really worth twice as much?

yep, that's the only diff. It is nice to have your car inside... no rain, no snow, no one stealing your radio, etc. worth twice as much? That's debatable.

It's time to preserve (beyond my memory) the patients I saw today in the walk in clinic:
- one drug addict who was quite blatant in wanting more Vicodin. (she was refused -- the doctor was well aware of her tendencies, including leaving rehab.) the crying and phantom ("nonorganic" in the literature  ) pain would have been quite heartwrenching to watch had i not been aware of her history, which included walking out on rehab for coke.
- one former drug addict on welfare who wanted acupuncture. while it's noble that she wants a non-narcotic treatment given her propensity, welfare unfortunately will not pay for anything but the drugs. this problem is horrible -- people with the inclination to seek out alternative treatments should not be forced to take highly addictive narcotics (which, incidentally, are incredibly expensive). she was a hypochondriac, self-diagnosed (not backed up by any clinical tests) with anxiety, insomnia, depression (ok, this was real), some new phantom condition that all of the hypochondriacs seem to have, leg twitches, etc. she received medication to relieve her sleep, but nothing for the pain, since she just moved into the area and the walk in clinic is not the place to get prescriptions for chronic pain.
- a guy with an infected lymph node. it was huge. antibiotics for him via iv. possible leukemia, but nothing certain at this stage of the game (he had a history of several infections in the past 8 months, including a staph infection that hung around for a month, after being healthy for decades).
- a guy with "classic symptoms" for a "L5-S1" problem -- pain down the back of the leg, numbness in the outside of the foot. back xrays revealed a compressed vertebra, but that wasn't the problem. mris ordered to reveal the discs better. he got vicodin for his pain since he didn't know what it was (making it highly unlikely that he is an abuser like those described above).
- another hypochondriac old lady. a regular, she was complaining about shoulder pain. with much ado she was lifted onto the table and given a shot in her natural shoulder (as opposed to her other one, all plastic and stainless steel, which can't be messed with -- an injection might lead to infection, and an infection in a prosthetic joint would lead to the prosthesis being pulled). apparently there was some running joke about her and stool samples. i didn't ask, and thankfully she didn't ask for it either.
- a lady who stepped on a mechanical pencil. a 5 mm or so piece of graphite was pulled from her foot uneventfully.
- a guy who complained of a stuffy ear over the past week. after a marble sized chunk of earwax was irrigated from his ear all symptoms disappeared.
- a guy who had sinus problems and inflamed eyes. an xray of the sinus revealed that they were fine. he was put on allergy medication and referred to his family doctor.
- a young child (with accompanying mother; the kid was half-asian and looked a lot like me back when i was 5, incidentally) who was very quiet while two sutures were removed from the back of his head.
- the son of the police chief out here, who suffered from gastro-esophigal (sp?) reflux. gi xrays ordered, and anti-reflux medicine (like you see on tv, basically) prescribed. the kid (high school age) has an older brother who is going to be a sophomore at fair harvard, btw.
- a woman with a sprained ankle. she was notable not for that but for her forearms: i didn't notice this (i was looking at her ankle, after all) but after having this pointed out to me in the time between ordering xrays and seeing her again it was very clear that she was a cutter: her forearms had scars from the wrists to the elbows. manic depressive, former eating disorder patient, quite the past history. the ankle was fine, btw -- she was given an pump-up splint and sent on her way. this patient was just interesting because it showed that one must look at the whole patient, not just at the afflicted area, to see how their condition is.
- there are probably more, but these are the only ones that i can remember now
All in all, this wasn't a high traffic day (this was over 7 hours, including a lunch break). It was an eye-opening experience, tho: I definitely do not want to be a family doctor and deal with these kinds of people. The manipulative behavior on the drug addicts' part especially is really awful.
Also, just in case any one is wondering, I didn't have to sign or verbally agree to any confidentiality agreements. All of the patients agreed to let me watch, too. So I don't think I'm doing anything too unethical here, especially since all of them except for the police chief's son are effectively anonymous.

Made BLT sandwich, burned bacon, making it a LT.
Practiced trackstands for 30 minutes in my garage because it was too wet to hit the trails...still cant do them with any regularity.
Applied to a job.

Marzocchi called this morning. It turns out that both stanchions were cracked. :thumb: Details have yet to be divulged, but the guy who called (I think it was Brian Peterson from this board) suggested that we discuss their crash replacement upgrade program... It's too bad they don't make a 1.5" headtube fork, else my choice would be clear. Now which one should I get? :D

If I get a Z1, I'd definitely want to get one of those snazzy 2003 models with the larger stanchions, crazy crown, and one piece lowers. Time to call and see if this might be possible -- I'd be more than willing to switch forks (with the old Z1 which hopefully has arrived... Ari?) for a few months to be able to bask in 2003 goodness later on. :D
Update: Brian (not Peterson, altho I did chat with him for a few seconds by mistake) was out to lunch.
2003 Z1 Freeride:

2003 Shiver SC (which is the same as in past years, methinks, so if they had an old one lying about I'd jump on it, esp. since the 2003s won't be out for a while in all likelihood):

now that's a good idea I hadn't thought of. that'd look killer, not to mention the intense stiffness.

It sounds as if you're getting old. Be very afraid. (I saw many old people today shadowing an internal medicine doctor, and all but one old lady had terrible [perceived?] health problems. not that you'll be an old lady anytime soon...) Thanks for checking for the package. This is kind of fishy, yet again -- Rob supposedly sent it close to two weeks ago.
I finally got a hold of the non-Peterson Brian at Marzocchi after several failed attempts throughout the day, and found out my options. (Fixing the fork is not a good option, as it would run ~$180 thanks to the two cracked stanchions + rebuild that it would require.) Which of these would _you_ pick? :D
Behind door number one we have the tried and true 2002 Z1 Freeride. Available in blue and grey immediately, it would run $250. Here it is:
http://www.marzocchimtb.com/bombers02/2002_images/Z1.jpg
In its favor lie its price, familiarity, immediate availability, and the ability to run a normal 9 mm wheel (which I will have a fine freeride specimen of, should Rob's Z1 ever arrive). Against it are its familiarity, 30 mm stanchions (which just aren't sufficient now that 32 mm is on the horizon ;) ), and two piece construction, which has led to creaks for some riders on RM.
Door number two hides the lovely 2003 Z1 Freeride, as pictured above. Available October-ish, crash replacement prices haven't been set, but likely would be $350, according to Brian. Its strengths include one piece lowers, 32 mm stanchions, cool crown, and choice of 9 or 20 mm axle with true quick release on the 20 mm version, finally. Its downsides are its price and delayed availability.
The final door conceals the 2002 Shiver Single Crown, as pictured above again. It would be available immediately for $350, but I'd have to buy a 20 mm wheel. It has quite a few detractors who say it's too flexy. On the other hand, it has a few outspoken advocates, including BMXman and ohio, who say that it is a great performer. And I must admit that it looks awesome. As silly as that sounds, my bike must look cool, and I love how it looks.
With these points in mind, I'm torn between options two and three. Help me choose. :D

the Z1 option essentially ends your urban career for the season given that your other z1 is never coming;). the shiver SC is only made more expensive by the wheel, which you could probly put together for $100-$150 and have it be unbreakable. It also gives you the immediacy factor and the badass factor is multiplied by at least ten over the z1. Granted I've never ridden the shiver, but last time I checked the terms marzocchi and flexy were mutually exclusive.
of course the practical side of me says just go for option 1 or 2 if you must have 32mm stanchions as both of these options make infinitely more sense.
