What do you guys know about cycling clothing? Why is it that some jerseys (for example) are like $80 while others are like $30. (Same for shorts). Is there really that much of a difference?

I don't know about jerseys, but for lycra shorts the quality really does make a difference. I once bought really cheap shorts from Performance, and they were horrible. They only had 4 panels (or some ridiculously low number like that) so they didn't fit well, the seams weren't flat and rubbed little lines into my legs, and the lycra itself was grainy in texture. Ug. Anyways, I'm back now from dc, just in case anyone was wondering. :D How was MIIB, Thad?

It was good. Funny, and more so when they finally deneuralized Tommy.

Insc check arrived yesterday. With what I got after the deductible I'm probably gonna have to save for a little while. :(

Ah, so everyone was away. RM and Dewolfe have seemed really dead the last two days. That's funny that you spotted me because a little further down the road (past the law school) BostonBullit flagged me down. I'd never seen a pic of his face so had no idea who he was until he explained. :D Anyways, the Evil is resting at Ace until Wed night (to get those newfangled lever blades installed at long last), but if anyone wants to go on a road ride I'm game.

I knew they'd finally produce this. One of the best Ideas (at least for us big guys) that ever came to the f-ing sport.

The image didn't work. Everytime I redo my fas site (http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~tjclark/) it seems to get even simpler. I'm bored, I have time to kill: what should I do to it (now that I have the unified look ;) between it and the local site)?

I think next time you shouldn't have any images. Just lines of text. Not even links, just write out the url in text so that people have to copy and paste it in. :D

How about I make it a Word document instead, and make people download it to see what's new?

I have PS 7, btw, Ari. :D Grab these two (http://tjclark.ath.cx/files/ADOBE%20WARNING.txt%20(How%20to%20keep%20adobe%20p hotoshop%206%207%20illustrator%209%2010%20from%20s ending%20serial).txt) files (http://tjclark.ath.cx/files/Adobe%20Photoshop%207.dmg), and use this serial number (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=WwRx8.3914%24Om1.61805%40telenews.teleline .es&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fq%3DAdobe%2520Photoshop%25207%2520serial% 2520number%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg). (Note that the installer won't let you do a easy install since a few of the files are corrupted. If you custom install piece by piece you can get most everything installed save for Examples and some other sections which I'm sure you'll figure out. Also, don't install Adobe Online, or at least follow the instructions in the first link. The installer didn't seem to make a /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Web folder, maybe because I didn't install Adobe Online, btw)

Something similar was posted in another thread, explaining trail. I'd love to try one of the positive trail or rear wheel steer bikes. For a cash prize I think I could muster up enough strength to lock both brakes and hop all the way down the hall ;).

Aggh, can't get back to sleep. First I couldn't sleep due to Ian's love for loud violin concertos late at night and my obsessive inability to not be able to listen to any classical without mentally transcribing it, and then now this. Oh well, at least it's not like I have work to do tomorrow.

Last friday, when I was in Colorado, we went hiking in the mountains about a 45 minute drive from Boulder. The road is uphill all the way there and downhill all the way back and there were a bunch of riders (on both mountain and road bikes) going up and down when we were driving. There was one guy, however, that was crazy. On our way back into town after the hike (downhill) we saw this guy on a road bike up ahead of us who seemed to be going pretty fast. We caught up behind him and were basically tailing him for a while. We were going 50 mph and this guy was keeping up ahead of us just cruising down this hill. It was pretty crazy.

Only 78 (or 128? hmm) to go until you're a Pro Rider, Thad. And innumerable hours of brown nosing until you get a custom title. :D

Ari, did you grab PS 7? Or did you already have it thanks to HSA? If so, please let me know ;) as although it's cool to run a beta, running the release version would make me much more comfortable.

Finally, everyone look here: http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24446

How about that HRO repertoire? :D Just about everything on there was on my ballot, and the big trumpet pieces abound: Pictures is huge, Mahler 5 is huger, the Ravel is a standard audition excerpt, and the Tchaik isn't half bad to play, either. :D :D :D

Dvorak 8

Mahler 5

Only sad thing is that we're not playing any american music. I voted for all the Copland, but apparently no one else did. :(

Oh no, I hope I don't get assigned 1st on Pictures. I am in the process of selling my piccolo trumpet (which I never play -- that one rehearsal for Petrushka was the closest I came to using it) and one of the pictures requires picc. Oh well, I'll pass off the part to Mike or Toby (or more likely, will get assigned 1st on Mahler and will suffer lame parts on the other pieces this year).

Intenses are expensive -- no way you'll make a $1400 cutoff. But you probably already knew this. Anyways, I had an Uzzi SLX. Zonic Man here had an Uzzi SL which he broke; then again, he would have been much better suited with the SLX from the start, and he is abusive to bikes.

The DBR guy just accepted my offer btw. :D Both Ari and I will have new (old) toys to enjoy.

You probably don't want a bike like that (or like my Evil) with a really slack seat tube angle, because it will make a horrible xc ride.

My bad. It is a ds rig, yes. Isn't it tempting to take a freakish bike and set it up for xc, tho? :D I was considering a Schwinn Straight 8 downhill frame before I snapped up the Intense, and if it had front derailleur capability I would have been all over it. And that would have been a big mess. :D

some of the HUCA crowd emailed thad about doing some rides, and in classic HUCA form they want to get all serious(translate: get up before 10am). Some racing would be fun but we need a bit of interest, and I'd prefer if it didn't just become an offshoot of HUCA.

EDIT: but I'd be psyched to meet some more riders as long as we don't have to get up at the crack of dawn:)

Ok. I'll tough it out on the Evil. You are all going to be waiting for me on the climbs -- not only will I have only the middle ring to use, but I have the chain length short enough such that I can't shift into the largest cog. Plus I have to keep the seat down to avoid bending yet another seatpost (I bent the Ritchey at about 4 inches... ).

Now it's time to run off to find some CD-R discs, so I can restore from backup after my machine gets rooted due to all of this lovely php/mysql cruft running on it. :D

The urban ride as planned in the thread never happened, as the people supposed to go riding had excuses. I just went out for a 45 minute trot around Allston tho, and didn't kill myself. :D I was trying to, tho: I now can do baby wall rides on those cement barrier deals (getting both tires up on it). Committing to a wall ride when you have no transition is scary. :D How was your xc ride, Keith?

Fun. I spent about two hours out there by my rough count, jumped a lot, practiced rolling fakie down the face of jumps then spinning around, and met a few more bmxers. There are a lot of them. It's pretty tough to jump with the Super T -- it soaks up everything. Of course, it was very handy when I nose-cased the landings, which I did a few times. :D The rigid fork should be in the mail soon.

Did your road bike arrive? Oh yeah, I switched the tires on the Evil to 2.6" Gazzalodi Duals that I picked up on this board for a good price (~$30 cheaper than retail + shipping) and they're awesome. They are larger than any other tires I've run, including those downhill Maxxis ones I had for a bit. :D :thumb: (<-- I want smilies on my board :( )

So I finally ate dirt at the dirt jumps. I was feeling good today -- I hit them up before and after my meeting with my prof at the med school -- and was clearing all three with some regularity. Apparently I got too good at carrying speed into the third, because I started to land down on the flat. And even tho the Super T is still on the Evil, that's not good (especially since I was carrying speed because I learned to really point the bike down the transition). So on one pass I sailed down into the flat, landed on the front wheel, bottomed out, and then proceeded to skid on my side. Remind me to wear those fancy forearm pads that I bought next time.

I had my first day of "work" today, btw, and hit up the dirt jumps afterwards. The small line poses little challenge to clear now, although I did manage to fall in spectacular fashion more than a couple of times (only once or twice on the small line, tho  ). The middle line is a whole other beast. I met yet another monkey at the jumps, on a mtb no less, and he was doing the middle line very smoothly. Impressive. He's Nate -- Jester here on RM. Anyways, I worked up the guts to try the middle line a handful of times, and cleared it occasionally, and had some really painful crashes too. Thank you, forearm pads. Too bad you can't protect me when I land on the rear tire.

In other news: I rode with an expert class racer today in the fells. Holy s#!t he was fast (until we hit the tech, where I made up some of the ground I lost every time he could go fast). You can stick a fork in me, 'cuz I'm done. It was a tasty ride though. I think this whole racing thing is starting to appeal to me.

Other things that are starting to appeal to me: 6" disc up front?
With the new booster in the back the braking power up front just isn't cuttin it. Either I need another booster for the front, or I'm just gonna have to add another pound to my bike. ugh. I might as well just borrow toshi's evil.

I don't know. I really wanted to ride. Plus I go to bed at the latest midnight almost every night.

I took the aero bars off for this morning ride to give it the more "clean" look. Last night I also found the instruction manual for the bike computer online and then discovered that the computer had been set to the wrong tire size (slightly) meaning that I was actually going faster than I thought.

Sure, a little after 6 works. We could just bring the keg along with us :p. Or maybe fill our Camelbacks with it?

Hmm, I'm due to pick up the headless Evil from Ace about that time. (Incidentally, I'm supposed to be dropping it off right now. :D But I digress.) I'll just have to show up a bit early and pester them.

ok, so I'm going to go on the keg run, and then I'll stop at either toshi's or ari's, depending on who's home at the time. This, with luck should be about 6:15. I have my bike on me so we can ride out as soon as I get there.

I'm spending about 250 on a wheel...

The specs:
Mavic 517, silver (they stopped doing the funky colors!)
DT swiss competition spokes, butted 14/15
Alloy nipples, black
chris king disc hub, black (just in case)

hopefully, I'll have everything and get a chance to build it up before race day.

The Unyielding Evil, as the bike shall henceforth be known, is quite the handful. Ow. I didn't even try to jump off the stairs at the end of the bridge, as I feared that I'd break myself. The bike certainly is worlds easier to manual, however. After sitting down in a sketchy parking lot in Allston having "deep" philosophical thoughts I went mad and looped around the lot practicing manuals. While not consistent at them, I found that on a good manual I can coast the length of a parking spot, which is probably 15 or 20 feet. It's a start. :D

Ari's physics tip of the day: drafting is cool.

So I went riding this morning (out to Bedford and back) and on the way back I was passed by these two guys who were going about 7 or 8 mph faster than I was at the time. I caught up to them and pulled in behind the second guy to draft off him. Low and behold, suddenly I could go much faster than before and had to do barely any work. It was cool.

I have one, but I broke the cable (3x) and I can't find anywhere that sells em.

But I did the mileage, and it was a total of 13.2mi, that's 6.6mi of uphill in .6, 1.3 and 1.8mi intervals, given that the beginner class race is only 8mi, and only half of it is uphill, I think I'm in good shape.

This is from the LaunchBar help file. I assume the same sort of thing applies to whatever other apps you want.

In order to get rid of the dock icon, LaunchBar has to be run in "background mode". To turn on this background mode you have to open the LaunchBar application package (Control click the LaunchBar program file in Finder and choose "Show Package Contents"), navigate to Contents/Info.plist, and open the Info.plist file with TextEdit, e.g. via drag & drop onto TextEdit. At the end of this file find the line containing <key>NSUIElement</key> and change the line below from <string>0</string> to <string>1</string>. Finally you have to save these changes and to restart LaunchBar.

It arrived. And my Evil has leaky brakes. Time to run off to the shop. :D

After-ride/pizza update: the DBR fits me, looks to be in great condition, and seems about ideal but for a slightly slack head angle. Maybe that will suit me just fine, coming from the raked out Evil and Intense, tho. We shall find out tomorrow: I have a rehearsal from 7:30 so I'd like to be on the road by 4:30 for the afternoon ride, in addition to the morning one. ;) Any takers? Sorry about the early time, but there's nothing I can do.

Oh yeah, thanks, Ari, for the use of your front wheel. I returned it if you didn't notice. :D Unfortunately I seem to have pulled the front brake pads out of their holders when trying unfruitfully to wedge the tire between the brake arms, but since I didn't want to rummage through your stuff to find pliers I left everything as it is. So I went into Ace today... and after my brakes were bled, it was discovered that a) the hose has a leak, and b) the caliper has a leak. What a mess. If it proves to be infeasible to rebuild the caliper I really will be running Avid mechs this weekend.

Also, as I mentioned to Ari in the street, let's ride tomorrow an hour earlier (meeting at the Governor's Road entrance to the Fells at 7 am). The earlier time isn't only for sadistic reasons; it's also so that Ari can make it to work at 9.

First off, a warning: I am going to delete this thread at the end of the summer, so that we can start a new one (without my name in the title). So when your post counts drop precipitously, this is why. Why I plan on deleting it is because my computer's ip will be different, and I don't feel like updating the myriad of links in this thread.

Click on the picture for pics from this morning's ride. There were so many photos that I split the page up into sections for better readability. :D But first, I must highlight this movie:

http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/july%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Pages/movies/MVI_1463.jpg (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/july%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Pages/movies/MVI_1463.AVI)

Actually, in all seriousness, Keith had a good day, cleaning everything in sight. Ari was attacking the climbs like a road rider ;) too, cleaning many tricky sections. I, on the other hand, was just glad that my falls weren't captured on camera. :D

The page (click the pic):

http://roam135-42.student.harvard.edu/images/humba/july%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/Images/14.jpg (http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/july%2025,%202002%20Fells%20ride/)

Oh yeah, one other note: my rear tire went flat riding home, and Ace wasn't quite open yet. Unfortunately, right after Ari left for work, I realized that I'd only brought my ID with me. Being too lazy to change the tube in the street (especially since I'm going to throw that Conti tire I have laying around on the rear for a bit more air volume) I walked the bike from Ace Wheelworks back to DW.

dude, sorry about that! Glad you made it home okay.

Also, when you delete the thread my post count is going to drop to like 4. That's going to be funny. Why do you need to delete it? We could just leave it be and start a new one!

Ok, I'll just leave a note at the beginning and end saying that the urls need to be modified to work. At this point your post count will drop to 31 actually. ;)

Anyone up for the 6:30 am huca Fells ride? I think I'm going to do it, even tho today's ride evidently took a lot out of me (I just passed out on my bed for several hours).

I am still planning on heading out to the sale tomorrow morning, after the ride. After all, if they open at 10, and we're leaving from Davis (!) at 6:30... maybe I'll do two laps. ;) Ok, maybe not.

From huca-summer:

Hi there gang. Am still trying top get folks out on the trails! Will be
heading to the Fells tomorrow (Friday) at 6:30am, and welcome beginners or
whomever to join me. Meet in Davis Square by statues (In front of Denise's
ice cream).

Amy :)

or you could just use (quasi-illegaly) DynDNS.org (or some other DNS forwarding thing) like me! Then you always have the same address, forever and ever.

Oh, and what time shall we leave from DeWolfe? If we're supposed to be there at 6:40 how about leaving at 6:20? Too early? Too late?

hmm. I don't want to get in trouble with the noc. We're actually supposed to be at Davis Sq at 6:30, so I figure that we should be on the road by 6:15. Ugh.

In other news, I finally got to the rage thurs night ride... It was all going along fine until the back of the group met up with the ranger. As soon as the front got word, we were all bookin it out of there like high school kids running from the cops at a kegger. Fortunately the ranger did not have his usual ticket proffering statie with him, so everyone got out scot free.

Riding the hiking trails in the fells is illegal? ;) hehe

k, I'll pick up some food if you tell me what to get. Powerbars, what else? I don't want to lug around a jug of water on the T...

Today's early morning ride was a success, btw. Good times for all, but only two pictures: http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/humba/july%2026,%202002%20Fells%20ride/index.html
