so my zoom lens choice is down to the 70-300 DO IS canon, or the 70-200L canon lenses.
L lens pros:
much cheaper ($550 vs $1100)
arguably better photo quality
pimp factor of the white lens
lower f stop, constant throughout zoom range
DO IS lens pros:
much smaller (4" vs 7") for stealth factor and portability
50% more reach
IS is a good solution to higher f stop usage
they both weigh about the same.
the DO, from reviews i've read, would appear to need more post-processing efforts to get sharper photos. i am a complete n00b @ PP stuff, and while i plan to learn at least the basics, this is a detriment for me right now. i guess the price difference is also a big one...but the portability/stealth factor could offset that. for people who have the 70-200L, do you use it a lot or find that its size precludes this?
I've been looking in very much the same space, but between the 70-300 F4 IS (non-DO) and the 70-200 F4L. Pretty much everything I've read has discouraged the DO lens, since the diffractive thing is kind of an experiment and the lens isn't as good as those alternatives. I'm leaning towards the 70-300 non-DO...

DO IS lens looks better

that's a good plan. if you decide like me that you like to shoot indoors without flash, however, at some point you'll want faster lenses, particularly at the long end. f/4 is more than adequate for wide angle imo.
i guess with the DO IS being even slower it's not really a factor to sway you away from the 70-200/4, but eventually i found that f/4 was limiting, not the bulk or weight of the lens (which were non-issues). ymmv.
but the f2.8 lens is a monster! and hugely pricey to boot.

oh, i agree. that's why i went with the 135mm f/2L. sharper, faster, lighter, and not white although still L glass.

of course it'll expand my budget by nearly 50%, but it gives me more overlap w/ than the 17-40 while gaining a full stop. it would also make my 50mm prime lens probably useless, so maybe i could get $60 for that baby and buy a filter.

I just got back to town so this may be too late, but if you put the disk in the freezer for half an hour you may be able to get info off of it for a while. Try and make sure that it doesn't get wet or condensation, etc. We've done that with drives whose disk heads are going bad with frequent success in our shop here. Something about the contraction due to temperature, i guess.

Toshi,
I am looking into getting a WRX wagon for my next car, coming from an 4wd truck and living in VT I need something good in the snow, how does the wrx handle? Also whats the average mpg in town and highway? Another question is how big the cockpit is. I am almost 6'4'' and most cars are fairly uncomfortable to drive in. Thanks for the help, Dan
Toshi
03-07-2006, 03:15 PM
there's plenty of headroom in the wrx - no sunroof helps out with that. go test one out to see if you'll fit.
its handling in the snow is superb, on the other hand. my street tires are Nokian WRs, and the combination of those tires + awd has not let me down in my skiing adventures (and there have been quite a few powdery parking lots with stuck pickups and fwd cars so far this year in the pac nw  ).
finally, i'm averaging around 22-23 mpg. high was 28 mpg on an all highway cruiser up to whistler. my car's mods have an indeterminate effect on mileage, however (as does my driving style -- did i mention how fun flat foot shifting with the UTEC is? :D), so don't put too much weight on my one data point. fwiw, i used to see 16 mpg in my '96 pathfinder w/31"s.

keep the shutter speeds over 1/(1.6 x the focal length) and you should be fine. it also helps that f/4 is pretty sharp on that lens, too. i think f/5.6 or so was the sweet spot? but i might be making that up.

it up and died yesterday. or at least had a cough that flared up: only started on the 3rd try, sounded horrible, would die every time i'd push in the clutch while off the gas. i drove it 300 feet up the driveway, decided that it should only travel on flatbed for the time being  and then used my uber-skillz to coast it backwards and into my parking spot with the engine off. (parking spots at my development have a angled 4ish" curb so this was a non-trivial task.)
it's getting diagnosed and hopefully fixed on friday. if it's fixed then i'm doing a track day on saturday and an autox on sunday... if not? :(

other news: the problem with my car was traced down to a flaky mass air flow sensor. hopefully a $3 can of MAF sensor cleaner took care of that problem. unfortunately, the MAF acting up caused the car to backfire, and the backfire caused a weak weld on my already-leaking uppipe (the pipe between the engine and the turbo) to fail. so now i have a big exhaust leak and slow spooling of the turbo. looking at it from a positive perspective, at least nothing major (valves, pistons, etc.) is broken, and i can still drive the car around just fine.
other news x 2: old cascade powder is too heavy for my refined tastes :D . i demand fresh powder! oh well, day 15 under my belt in any case.
other news x 3: i probably won't have a computer for another 2 weeks, and if the replacement suffers the same problem as the original (macbook pro with a buzzing lcd backlight) then i might just try to live without a computer at all... am i crazy for considering this?

$3 MAF? hahaha
had that done last year in the Chevy and it cost me close to $300 (labor stinx)
In other news, I am officially in the car hunt. Looking for 3 - 5 yr old sedans that are reliable and relatively efficient given that I'm putting ~1K miles / month on the current car, and don't cost a fortune to repair and insure (Lex and Acura are sadly out of the picture)
So far I've looked at Toyo Camry (liked the 4cyl with stick. unfortunately they never made the 6cyl with standard), Accord, and Civic of several persuasions.
Any suggestions on the Subie front? Rumor has it they're underpowered, and I don't want a turbo. Wasn't there a Subaru sedan that had the WRX engine without the turbo? 2.5 RS or something?
What I really want is a new IS 350 AWD, but that'll have to wait until those post-med-sch radiologist checks come in. :)

But, you are correct. The 2.5RS is a non-turbo. It'll be plenty zippy compared to the cavy, although it feels a little tinny (construction-wise).

it won't feel cheap compared to the cavalier  i would suggest a 4 cyl/manual accord or camry. there's something to be said for a competent car.
as for my personal subie news the MAF cleaner didn't work, and i was stranded at the autocross on sunday (after winning my class!). oh, i was the only car in my class that day :D . in any case i've now used up 4/4 of my free AAA Plus tows so my car has to stop breaking down... right now it's dead in the driveway but i have a MAF sensor ($183, ouch) in the mail.

whats up with the gasoline in the US???? (or whats up with it here?) both places sell it by the US gallon (3.7L).
a couple wrx (with the round headlights like yours and basically stock) i know get 15-20mpg...
hey, i used to suspect something, i have some evidence for now...
a friend just imported a 2004 US sti.. he said he was getting 18 mpg while he drove it in the states... but over here, the same car gets around 13-14mpg...
my evo (6, it was a japanese right hand drive originally) used to get 13-15 mpg, and my buddies evo5 (original left hand drive) gets about the same....
toshi, what was you said were the different octane ratings and stuff...
Toshi
03-15-2006, 02:58 AM
huh. 100 octane RON (japanese and probably your "100 octane") is roughly equivalent to US 92 or 93 octane (which is RON + MON all over 2). i don't know why the mileage would be so much worse on your gasoline, however -- the roughly equivalent octane in each mean that there exist roughly the same # of energy.
one possible theory might be that your suppliers are "watering down" the product, so to speak, and that the cars' engine computers are responding to inferior gas by pulling timing in response to knock. i'm not sure exactly how this would affect mileage, however, so i'm just waving my hands basically. :D

Maybe Peru's high altitude has something to do with the engine efficiency?

Maybe Peru's high altitude has something to do with the engine efficiency?
i don't think that should affect turbo cars: their turbos pump in air until a certain pressure is reached. it may take more pumping since the air is less dense, so turbos might wear out faster, but it takes a negligible amount of energy to spin the turbo. this is because it makes use of the energy in the rapidly moving, cooling stream of exhaust gases, energy that is otherwise wasted.
thus an equivalent amount of air is packed into the engine in turbocharged cars, whether at low altitude or high. in response the engine should meter out the same amount of gas.
on the other hand, i do think turbo cars run slower times on the dragstrip at high altitude, so maybe my theory here is wrong, too

i think turbos meassure delta of p, rather than absolute pressure of the admission.
so at sea level a turbo at 1 bar, means the pressure at the tb is 1 bar (turbo) + 1 bar (current atm pressure) = 2 bar absolute pressure...
if at 10000ft is 0.9 bar (or whatever atm pressure is up there) + 1 bar (turbo) =1.9 absolute pressure and so on.
lima is a coastal city, so no high altitude situation here.
i think the energy available in the gasoline here is lower than that in the US, independent from the octane rating...
must be watered down at somepoint.. and if they do, i wonder what they use to water it down... but seeing basically all of the gasoline burned in Lima comes from the same state owned refinery, so you get about the same mpg regardless the brand of gas (and i find it extremely hard to believe there is a nationwide conspiracy to water down the gas at the gas stations all at the exact same rate)... i still wonder what is exactly going on.

since this has become the de facto photog forum, i'll solicit criticism from the experts.
i tried my 1st low-light/club setting shots a couple of nights ago, and posted some of the better ones here:
http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147660
i only did post-processing on the 1st (made it b/w, and sharpened once, via Picasa). clearly i need to learn a bit more on PP. any other ideas? i ended up shooting most full-open @ f/1.8 and max ISO of 1600; otherwise, i'd get blurry shots (and they weren't the most energetic band on stage either!).
Toshi
03-16-2006, 10:32 AM
what white balance setting did you shoot with? shooting a grey card first, then shooting raw for the rest of the night (then click-balancing or futzing around with K values when converting) is the way to go, imo. also, a couple of them look front focused. to avoid this try manually selecting only the center focusing point and be deliberate about focusing on their faces. i quite like that last one, btw :thumb:
narlus
03-16-2006, 11:01 AM
i used auto wb...stuff like 'shooting a grey card', 'RAW' and 'K values ' (is this referring to light temp, in Kelvin?) aren't in my lexicon yet. :)
sometimes i definitely forgot to change the AF point on a couple, esp when changing camera orientation.
Toshi

here's a gray/grey card: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=231564&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
raw is what you should be shooting :D instead of jpeg. it lets you screw around with exposure, contrast, sharpening, white balance (!!) when converting the images on the computer. and yes, K is color temperature in kelvin.

WARNING: I'm about to agree with Toshi.
RAW is definitely the way to go if you have time. It takes *most* of the guesswork out of color correction. If you insist on shooting JPEGs and happen to have photoshop, you can use the curves tool to easily correct a group of images with your gray card:
1. when you get to your venue, set your WB manually (I think you can actually use a gray card to measure and set a custom WB on the 20D, but I never use the feature, so you'll have to check the manual). The important thing is that you don't use the Auto WB, because it will change the WB in every image.
2. Take a full frame shot of the gray card
3. Shoot the rest of your pics.
Now when you get your pics into photoshop, you break out the curves tool and, using the gray (middle) eyedropper, click the image (you can click anywhere because it's all gray). This will correct your image so it actually appears gray. Save these settings and apply them to all your other images to correct their color. You may have to do a little extra tweaking in really extreme situations, but generally it'll work out nicely. Then you can also use the curves tool to correct the whie and black points...
narlus
03-16-2006, 09:53 PM
so when you shoot the grey card to set the WB, i imagine you do it in the light conditions you will eventually be shooting in? for instance, between sets, there's more lights on in the venue, but when the band gets on, the house lights dim and the stage lights are the sole source. at that point, does it matter where the grey card is, relative to the light source? ie. you can't set it on stage and shoot it.
Toshi
03-16-2006, 09:57 PM
in that kind of lighting condition your best bet is to shoot RAW and worry about white balance later :D

so when you shoot the grey card to set the WB, i imagine you do it in the light conditions you will eventually be shooting in? for instance, between sets, there's more lights on in the venue, but when the band gets on, the house lights dim and the stage lights are the sole source. at that point, does it matter where the grey card is, relative to the light source? ie. you can't set it on stage and shoot it.
You have to be shooting the gray card in the light source your subject is in, so yes, in the stage lights. If the house is totally dark, you theoretically could shoot it anywhere, but sunce that's not ever the case you'd want to have the light from the stage lights reflected off the card and that's only feasible where you're able to get near the stage. Of course all this hassle could be avoided by shooting RAW and fixing it later. It's pretty likely that once you start shooting RAW you'll never go back...

ok,i am not done w/ my wide angle lens search yet...here's a post i threw up on FM, but the responses were a bit lacking so i figured i would solicit info from you guys:
i am debating which lens to add to my bag next. currently i have:
18-55 kit lens
50 f1.8
70-200 f4
i will be going to visit family in Rome in a few months, and want something which can handle tight cityscapes well, and be usable in challenging low-light indoor situations (churches, etc). i'd also like to spend roughly 500-600 dollars. maybe i am asking too much.
the candidates i have in mind are:
canon 10-22 f3.5-4.5
tokina 12-24 f4
tamron 17-35 f2.8-4
canon 24 f2.8
i tossed the sigma 10-20 f4.5-6 from consideration as being too slow. i was also considering the 17-40L canon lens, but fear too much overlap with lenses i already have. the new 17-55 canon lens which is coming out looks intriguing, but it's very expensive, unproven, and may not even be available when i need it. plus, i might as well toss my kit lens in the bin if i get that, and it might not be as wide on the low end as i may need.
any advice is appreciated!
the canon 10-22 seems to be a winner based on reviews, but is it fast enough? the widest prime i can find is the 24, and that's not very wide. i don't want to overlap too much w/ existing glass, but if i need to make my kit lens (18-55) useless, so be it.
Toshi
03-23-2006, 12:02 PM
wide angles don't need to be fast, and are generally not sharp unless stopped down anyway (except for maybe the canon 16-35L. maybe.). i rarely shoot below f/9 on my 12-24 or previously on the 15mm fisheye... also, there exist 17mm and even 12mm primes by tokina and sigma/canon, respectively.
narlus
03-23-2006, 12:36 PM
well, i guess i was mentioning 'fast' in terms of trying to capture low-light/indoor stuff such as church interiors, w/o a tripod.
toshi, at f/9 stops or so, for indoor or cloudy days, do you need a tripod or just crank the ISO up?
Toshi
03-23-2006, 12:38 PM
you only need 1/(focal length * 1.6). at 12mm that's not too hard to get at ISO 800 or 1600, and you can always use noise reduction. i am pretty sure any of those lenses at f/4 would look pretty poor...

Staaation Waaagon....
But, you are correct. The 2.5RS is a non-turbo. It'll be plenty zippy compared to the cavy, although it feels a little tinny (construction-wise).
Anybody know anything about the Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon?

tripods: i'd recommend the bogen 3001 or 3021 plus any ballhead to start. the remote shutter release cable is also very useful, and both will lead to more thoughtful shots w any luck.
the obs is like any other non turbo impreza, plus/minus body cladding, a bit more ride height, and tires. they're good cars.
my wrx apparently isn't, however. the shop thought they had it fixed on wednesday but it died again yesterday, giving it a total of 2.5 days it has been running since march 7. :dead: at some point before i start rotations in july i may have to seriously consider selling it and getting something more reliable, such as a stck late model civic such as yours, tim.

I'd go with a 3-pivot head (I'm not sure what the 'real' name is, but it's the one with two perpendicularly linked arms, one for X and one for Y direction, then a swivel for Z direction) instead of a ballhead. It's a little more awkward to use, but gives more range of motion and can hold a heavier set-up.

I use somewhat frequently, but unless you're doing things with super slow shutter speeds or want absolute perfection, there's really no need to by a rediculously expensive one. I got a cheap one from a friend for free and bought a nice head for $30. Seems to work fine.

so my car finally seems to be running acceptably again. a list of parts replaced in the last two months or so related to its problem in roughly chronological order:
fuel filter
mass airflow sensor
sundry fuses and relays
all four coil packs
spark plugs
aftermarket engine computer (swapped back to mine after it was revealed to not be a contributor to the problem)
fuel pump
in addition the car received a new uppipe, downpipe, and copious spot welds to fix worsening exhaust leaks from rusted components.
:dead:
if it breaks down one more time related to this same stumbling issue then i'm really going to strip and sell it... on the other hand, most of the components that do tend to fail or need replacement around this mileage (80k) have been looked at or replaced, so maybe it's good to go now.

the computer wasn't throwing any helpful codes so it was anyone's guess whether the problem was in spark or in fuel. turns out the plugs were pretty fouled and the fuel pump was failing, so i guess the answer was that both were faulty.

when i had the car dyno tuned they were aiming for stoichometric (sp?) in closed loop, 11.5:1 in closed loop iirc. but that was before these problems started.
the shop didn't have means to test the fuel pressure in real world situations, and the pump was only intermittently bad (until tuesday, when it wouldn't support the car running for more than, say, 30 sec before it shut off).

if it dies again, maybe the next thing to be suspicious of would be the crank position sensor or the camshaft position sensor (i dont remeber what the imprezas use).

We all knew, we were just too polite to talk you out of either of them:) .
...but speaking of chainline issues, I had to respace and redish the rear wheel on the shogun (did I mention I got it for $120 on craigslist), as it was a SS conversion from a 6spd freewheel and had a less than ideal chainline. Had to cannibalize two old hubs for spacers. A good reminder of why I never throw bike parts away...

Engine:
IHI VF34 ball-bearing turbo
Tial 38mm external wastegate
TurboXS front mounted intercooler
TurboXS UTEC (user tunable engine computer) piggyback
TurboXS DTEC-BC Pro electronic boost controller
Walbro 255 liter per hour fuel pump
Ultimate Racing 600cc fuel injectors
Transmission and exhaust:

STi limited slip center differential, not adjustable however
ACT Street Disc clutch
Custom catless uppipe
Invidia bellmouth catless 3" downpipe (with the external wastegate plumbed to it)
BPM 3" midpipe with one catalytic converter, one resonator
Prodrive 2.5" axleback exhaust
Stats:
The target boost is 18-19 psi from 3500 to 5500, then tapering down to 15 and change at redline. 284 whp/262 lb-ft. on a dynojet in February (running straight 18 psi for this pull):
Dyno chart: http://toshiclark.com/images/miscellaneous/random/Toshi-Clark-dyno.jpg
The previous owner dragged the car (I haven't, as I've just stuck to autocross) and his best time was 12.6xx @ 111 mph.
Brakes and suspension:
Stillen drilled rotors up front, Powerslot slotted rotors out back, stock size for 16" wheel compatibility
Hawk brake pads iirc
Stainless steel brake lines throughout
D2 Racing coilovers, 7k/5k spring rates (about twice as stiff as stock)
Helix solid endlinks in the rear
Whiteline 24mm front swaybar, Perrin 20-22-24mm adjustable rear swaybar

Rota Slipstream 16x7" rims with 245/45/16 Kumho V700 Victoracer R compounds for autocross. I'm selling this wheelset due to lack of time for racing, however...
Cosmetic and other:
Valentine 1 hard wired
Game Boy Advance SP, used to control the DTEC boost controller

Fog lights deleted to make way for the intercooler plumbing
"Subaru" on trunk shaved for cleanliness
Stereo:
Dynamat Extreme in the trunk, cabin, and doors
No head unit! instead the iPod is wired directly to the amps:
JL Audio 300/4 and esomethingorother amplifiers

today's classical track of the day comes from the Romantic period, from the pen of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. or something close to that spelling in any case:

the wind was pretty brisk today:
http://toshiclark.com/May-2-wind.png
as you might have guessed, i was out on the water for the period marked in yellow. :) i earned my intermediate singlehanded dinghy rating today thanks to the wind -- you can't get higher ratings unless the wind is blowing sufficiently strong to make things difficult. this is cool because it doesn't expire unlike the novice ratings, i can now go out of my own accord in wind up to 15 knots, and can now venture outside of the local bay and into lake union itself, where the wind is often stronger.
score.
starting tomorrow, i learn how to sail catamarans, too... it's amazing the time you free up when you don't go to class.
oh, the really cool thing about getting my rating today was that the chief who administered the practical test (on the water) asked me afterwards if i want to teach! which was a nice ego boost, even if it may mean that they're short on instructors. in any case, i think i'll look into that in about 14 months or so after i re-emerge from the cave of 3rd year.

may 3 (http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2090317#post2090317) cTotD: strauss "vier letzte lieder" / berlin / abbado / matilla.
now off to get my car dynoed. it won't match the previous 284/262 numbers since it's a lower reading dyno. STis put down 220-230 when stock on this dyno, i hear, so i'd be quite happy with 240 or 250...
Toshi
05-03-2006, 02:12 PM
ugh. disappointing results on the Mustang dyno today: 229 whp, 191 ft.-lbs. of torque, 24% lower than what i got on the Dynojet dyno in portland. the official word is that stock STis pull 229 on the nose so at least that's comforting. (Mustang and Dynojet are two different dyno manufacturers, and results vary, as you can see.)
there was more power to be had but the boost wasn't where it should have been -- i had it set to peak at 19 psi and taper to just shy of 17 psi at redline, but instead was seeing about 3 psi lower across the board. i'm not sure what this is showing.
http://tinyurl.com/kzza8 has the pics in any case.
in the dyno chart below:
pink = boost, axis is on the right.
black = air:fuel ratio, which you can ignore
blue = torque. at least this looks better (in terms of shape) than before in portland. now there's ~95% torque available from 3800-5400 rpm.
red = horsepower, again measured at the wheels. were it not for the weird disappearing-boost problem it would have climbed until redline instead of peaking at 5500 and going down as you see here.

and it looks like the low boost was my fault for coming up with a wack DTEC map. it worked fine on the road, but under the higher load of the dyno the duty cycles i came up with were insufficient. i'm going to try to head back tomorrow before heading up to whistler to see if i can put down some better numbers with proper boost control.
from 3rd gear pull on an onramp just now:
2755 rpm, 6.3 psi
3046 rpm, 8.0 psi
3121 rpm, 10.2 psi
3270 rpm, 12.4 psi
3360 rpm, 13.6 psi
3448 rpm, 14.3 psi
3564 rpm, 17.5 psi
3652 rpm, 18.0 psi
... followed by small fluctuations centered around 18 psi, ranging from 15.6 to 19.8, ending up with the following:
5657 rpm, 16.7 psi
5777 rpm, 18.2 psi
5864 rpm, 15.4 psi
5999 rpm, 17.1 psi
6092 rpm, 15.5 psi
6212 rpm, 18.3 psi
seeing 1 bar of boost by 3500 rpm is pretty decent considering that the car has the big front mount intercooler, as the turbo has to fill up all the space in the piping and the intercooler itself before the engine gets its share.

somewhere along the line i got old all of a sudden, and lost the desire to downhill. well, not so much lost the desire as that finger and shoulder pain that i'd have previously shrugged off suddenly became important in my mind. i only got up to whistler 4 times last summer, for instance, as opposed to the probably 30 times i made it up to whistler/the shore/post canyon the summer before that.
given that there are essentially no legal riding spots within washington and that i knew i'd be a lot busier this year (which has proved to be true) it made sense to dump the bike while i could still a decent return for it.

well, i did have some issues, so don't get yr hopes up too high.
- at the michael hurley show, i screwed up and had the metering set to partial rather than evaluation. for the entire shoot. doh! as a result, the pictures had a much brighter background than they should have.
- it was at a church, and there was a sole spotlight on the left side of the performer. this meant i got ugly mic stand shadows across the face of samara for her entire set, and about 1/2 of hurley's set (after he moved the stand when he played fiddle); tara stood and played, so it was not an issue w/ her. it was such a quiet, intimate setting that i felt uncomfortable moving around to get different perspectives, and my shots suffered accordingly.
- at the mogwai show, i had the lens on MF for a few shots and forgot to reset it back to AF....wasted a bunch of shots there
- the strobes played havoc w/ the metering and focus for some of the mogwai shots, so i ended up going manual, both exposure and focus, and doing some burst shots. a few came out halfway decent.
- the 85 on a 1.6 crop body meant it was too long to get full images of the performers for the main part, and i either got face shots or partially cropped guitars. i swapped lenses to the 50mm for some shots, and that improved the situation. i was 2nd from the stage, and it was jammed so i couldn't really move backwards w/ the 85 and still get an unobstructed stage view (i wish i was a foot taller).
- on the plus side, i can now pretty much operate all my camera's controls and settings in the dark.

was that 135/2L usm a trade from the 70-200?
i'm tempted to land either the 28/1.8 or 50/1.4 or both, to aid in my low-light concert shooting endeavors. it'd be nice to have a wide angle available (my new tokina is far too slow @ f/4). how's the focusing capability in low-light for either?
Toshi
05-22-2006, 03:22 PM
i sold the 70-200 outright, then bought the 135 brand new for a good price from some taiwanese guy on the fredmiranda.com forums who apparently had connections. it had/has a warranty card and all. unfortunately his operation has been shut down -- i guess he got sloppy later on and didn't ship items on time.
the 28 focuses better than the 50/1.4, which tends to hunt quite a bit. something about the 50 not having a true ring-type usm? however, the 50/1.4 is critically sharp within its depth of field, even close to wide open. the 28 is most definitely not -- it's great for web work, but just recognize it's not that sharp.

i had another awesome day sailing today. the wind can be seen below, yellow marking the time period in which i was actually out on the water:
http://toshiclark.com/May24wind.png
it was the last day of the catamaran class (hobie 16) that i've been taking, so today was the day to show our stuff. i intentionally paired up with the other hotshot in the class, a freshman math major that happens to like sailing. and we tore it up -- we were the only ones to get an intermediate rating today, while others got a novice rating. (this is key for me since the intermediate rating doesn't expire, while the novice rating would expire while i was doing peds in pocatello...).
the wind was good and we were pushing it, so we actually ended up pitchpoling twice! (see previous posts in this thread for explanation of pitchpoling) once with her at the tiller, once with me at the helm. in between our two impromptu capsizes we also had to demonstrate one on purpose for the instructors, so it was quite the workout. given that we were out there for a couple of hours 2 unintentional capsizes isn't bad at all. we got pretty good at riding that edge where the boat is keeled up on one hull but isn't quite ready to flip.
:) what a day. (i also took final #3 of 4 today. but sailing is much more interesting.)
extra notes: the hobie 16 is a small catamaran for 2 people. you need 280 lbs of combined weight to flip one back upright if you capsize, and we were pretty close to that limit so it was a struggle. pitchpoling is what happens when the prow of your leeward hull (as opposed to windward -- leeward is the side away from the wind) digs into the water. the boat instantly stops and goes vertical, and if you are on the trapeze wires as we were today, then you go flying! i flew off the front of the boat, and my sailing partner almost hit the front of the hulls, a good 8 feet away, during one of the capsizes. finally, trapeze wires are wires that hang down from the mast that let you lean way out to the side of the boat in order to stay upright in high winds.

boston (cambridge, not the depressing suburbs):
- decent xc riding really close by
if by 'really close by' you are excluding these 'depressing suburbs', i'd say your riding options are limited to the Fells and maybe belmont.

after coming back from a few days of driving a honda CR-V around the throttle response on my WRX doesn't feel bad at all. the clutch (on my car, not the cr-v) was amazingly heavy, tho. either that, or my left leg suffered serious atrophy secondary to too many lungfuls of boston-area haze. sorry, guys, didn't have any time outside of the wedding festivities and was stuck in carlisle for most of the time.

Take it for what it's worth from an old guy: Back in the day, I learned to drive stick in a Porsche 912 (4 banger). The rule was watch the tach and don't upshift below 3,000 rpm. With the turbo VWs and Subarus, I've heard it is more like 4 or 5K rpm.

yeah, you can see that the torque really jumps up at 4k or so (dyno chart here (http://toshiclark.com/images/events%20and%20concerts/on%20the%20dyno%20at%20Kito%20Auto%20Sport%20-%20may%203,%202006/Pages/IMG_1898.html)).
i've "solved" the problem paradoxically by lowering the revs below 4k, by pulling out of spirited corners in 3rd gear instead of 2nd. in 1st and 2nd the car is simply too violent when it comes on boost for most roads. it's a lot easier to be smooth in 3rd even if it comes at a slight expense in pure speed -- it feels more satisfying to have a long, smoothly ramping up pull from 3k to redline in 3rd vs. two violent, short pulls in 2nd and then 3rd.
but this is all a moot point, as my car is in storage some 2750ish miles away from me for the next 6 weeks. :)

i'm going to post a general-interest thread in the lounge on this, but here i'll share more technical details and whining on my july 4 trip to Denali.
the light was very poor for the most part, as were shooting conditions: private cars are not allowed more than 15 miles into the park, while the access road stretches at least 90+. instead it is serviced by these buses:
http://toshiclark.com/images/trips/denali%20national%20park%20-%20july%204,%202006/Thumbs/IMG_2355.jpg
the buses were quite full -- i arrived there at 6:15 am after leaving fairbanks at 4, and was just able to snag the last ticket for the 7:30 bus when the ticket counter opened at 7. who were the buses full of, you ask? old people. with cameras. annoying, they were, especially when they made the bus stop repeatedly on sighting of sheep or other pedestrian beasts literally a mile away across a valley. picture this: "look at those white dots!" followed by frenetic snappings-away on shutter buttons...
in addition to that annoyance, the landscape itself wasn't as dramatic in most places as i might have expected of mighty alaska. there were a few nice vistas, however, and here's an example at ISO 200, 12 mm, f/13, 1/80. note that i really have to clean my sensor :dead: -- the dirt shows up especially in the stopped-down landscapes and the later macros...
http://toshiclark.com/images/trips/denali%20national%20park%20-%20july%204,%202006/Thumbs/IMG_2353.jpg
yes, macros: i decided that making my own light and concentrating on miniscule bundles of color would save the day, and ended up snapping a ton of macro shots with the ST-E2 on camera and the 420EX w/softbox held with my other hand at a 45 degree angle. here's a sample (with the sigma 180 macro) at ISO 400, f/22, 1/250
http://toshiclark.com/images/trips/denali%20national%20park%20-%20july%204,%202006/Thumbs/IMG_2369.jpg
finally, after my two batteries on the big camera were used up and my legs were spent after a two hour hike up and down a small mountain, we ran across a bear and her cub. this bear obliged by moseying on by the bus, and i snapped away vigorously with my old S30, which still had some juice in it:
http://toshiclark.com/images/trips/denali%20national%20park%20-%20july%204,%202006/Thumbs/CRW_2340.jpg
i'll make another post linking to the lounge thread once that's up. it'll have a different selection of photos + text which i'll mirror on my xanga (or just look at all of them in the gallery link atop this post if you don't like words and such :D)
