So since pretty much everyone here races - i thought i'd just ask a question out of pure curiosity..
how much does it cost to race in the usa? please dont include travel, bikes, or any other bs. just race liscensing and so on.
i ask because it seems ****ING expensive to race where i live, and it really puts me off of trying because ive formed this idea somehow that it would cost me a whole bunch of money to simply try racing let alone do it for a whole season.
i'm curious too, how does it cost u phlegm?

on the east coast, if you dont have a seasons pass and rnt racing NORBA races its like $60 and you get a 2 day lift ticket and a plate. NORBA races are about the same only you need a license whcih is another $30 if your under 18 or i believe $60 for adults (this is all USD $$). whats it cost for you guys?
In Ontario...
License: $80 covers your plate and racing for the whole season
Sat Practice: $28 (includes lift ticket)
Sunday Race: $38 pre-reg or $48 race-day (includes lift ticket)

If I remember correctly, Snowshoe's 4 race series with a Pro/Am format was $45 bucks for Pro (no license needed).
Canada Cup $50 for 3 days with lift tickets, Quebec Cups $45 usually with 3 day but sometimes only for 2. That is for Elite (Pro/Semi Pro in the US), prices for the other catagories are around $35-40. Can't remember for the lisence.
I really don't think it's any more expensive then going on a road trip. To get lift tickets alone for most of the places we race it would cost more then the regestration fee alone. The only differenece is do you want to ride the mountain or pay to learn one run.

The 3 places/series I mainly hit this year:
1. Plattekill - $60 for Sat Practice/Sun practice & race.
2. Mt. Snow (VT series, not National) - I forget but close to $70 for both days?
3. Whiteface - the steepest by far but Dowhnill Mike is working on it for next year - $80 for both days.

I just registered for a road ride, not even a race, just a ride I'm doing with some of my scouts for the cycling merit badge. The boy's registration was going to be donated by the ride promoters in turn for some help in preparing for the ride, they wanted adult leaders to pay their own registration fee, even with the biggest discount they could offer the fee was $45. All I get for $45 is free water, some limited mechanical support and a couple of pieces of fruit. $45 to ride and race with access to a lift seems like a bargain.

That was for all classes. pretty good price for the even IMHO.

Yep, Quebec has some of the cheapest racing around, and some of the best courses. It's friggin amazing. Not to mention, most of the people we race with are super nice guys and always willing to help each other.

To race the entire MSC series here in the Rockies, both DH and MX, it would cost a senior non-pro rider roughly $550 or so.
$60 yearly NORBA license
$38 per race entry fee x10 events = $380
$10 per day lift ticket for practice days. This is an average since some places cost more and others cost less, but if you make it for all practice days (Friday and Saturday of each event) you're looking at about $100 in lift tickets give or take over the season.
Keep in mind this doesn't include travel, camping or hotels, gas, and that sort of thing. Also, add another $5-10 to your entry fees if you register AT the event instead of pre-registering.
Racing is expensive...

I don't get this new trend of charginf for lift tickets on practice days. This is a new thing as of 2-3 years ago. It was incredbily uncommon at any races I had ever done before that (including NCS races, Nationals in Canada etc). Now it seems that everyone is trying to get away with it, what a scam.
Canada cups do not charge this, neither do MOST of the Quebec Cups. Lately I thnk some are trying to do it. Hell some events I have raced have tried to charge for a RACE DAY lift ticket. $60 race should include race day and one practice day lift service.

It's usually up to the resort, not the promoter. At least, that's how it's going here in Colorado. Angel Fire used to not charge for practice days but I figure that once they saw the numbers growing every year they got hip to wanting a piece of the pie. Sure the promoter could work out a "deal" with the resort to have lift tickets included, but then the price of the actual race would have to go up, and not all venues have/need a lift.
Besides, our races are $38 non-pro for entry fees, tack on about $15-25 for a weekend of lift access, and that's right at the $60 including lift tickets that I am seeing in the rest of this thread.
And then races that don't NEED a lift ticket (like the Chalk Creek Stampede: Dual Slalom on Saturday and Mountain Cross on Sunday) don't need to be affected, etc.

Wow, I would have loved to do upper schley to wdh... I had that dialed all season. be nice to see a dirt merch race... rode it faster this season than ever before and was trickin all the way down too.
anyway, im not really sure whether or not i'd like to get in to full on racing. i just think it would be really benificial to my riding. there's a local indoor bmx/4x coming up and im hoping that if i go out to try my hand it doesn't cost me $60 for one night of riding. i'd rather just go freeze my balls off at the skatepark if that's the case.
we'll see..
Heres the weakest Idea of a race I have ever heard of.
Theres some guys here that will spend $200USD. then wake up at 5am to start racing around 6am.
Start at sea level on a ROAD bike. Pedal uphill the whole time up to 9,000ft on top of a mountain. Thats it, no downhill, no fast carves, just huffin and puffin until you blackout...
