Welcome back to the new school year...IT has been at it again. That's right...no RM, those bastards! I'm also doing grad school right now (so it's not like I have a lot of time to even breathe)...but just wanted to say I miss the forum and there's been lots of great posts lately. :)

I don't think that's true, sanjuro... Sometimes going to http://ridemonkey.com instead of http://www.ridemonkey.com could work depending on how their filters are set - it'd have to be a pretty dumb administrator though.

However, if you don't mind being a little technical, there are options to get around this. This is a copy and paste of my posts in another thread:

If you have a broadband connection at home, you could pretty easily set up a secured tunnel that would allow you to browse whatever websites you want at work. There are lots of tutorials that will step you through the process.

All the web nazi people would see is a stream of encrypted traffic. They can block it, of course, but that will only work for as long as your IP is the same. Worst case is someone would just ask you what all the traffic is about and you could just say you use it to check your email or something.

edit: to clarify, a secured tunnel is an encryped connection to another computer. In this case, you'll just browse the internet through your home computer, and the home computer will encrypt all the data and ship it off through the tunnel.

Well, if you want to have a go at it, this looks like as good a tutorial as any:

Please note, this seems complicated/overwhelming... it's really not that bad. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes or so to do.

Before you start:

- If you are using a router of some kind (that is, your home computer is not directly connected to your cable modem or DSL modem), you will need to log into your router and configure it to forward port 22 (or whatever port you're using) to your home computer. See this tutorial (http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm) if you need help.

- If you don't want to check your home computer's IP address every time (you can use something like www.whatismyip.com), you can register with a service like DynDNS (http://www.dyndns.com/) that will let you assign an easy to remember address to your IP and you can download software off the site that will update everything automatically.

Here's a far more detailed tutorial that gives you a little more background and some more information about the process, plus it's a little sneakier:

...it suggests and shows you how to set up the encrypted tunnel on port 443, which is the port all those websites use that start with "https" (you know, anything where you put your credit card information in)... so it looks like you have a lot of traffic to normal secured websites.

Good luck... As I said in my copy and paste above, it sounds a lot more complex than it really is.

That is totally awesome! My old job was relentless at blocking websites. You really couldn't do anything outside of the company website. This really would have come in handy 6 months ago! :-)

thats too bad. You can setup a proxy like binary says if you have access to install putty on your work computer. If you have a laptop you can also setup some other inventive setups to go around

Since you are still testing this... here is some feedback from blocked monkey

Nope... I can get to the home page, but our blocker
has something in it that blocks any page with the word
"forum". If they change the forum ULR to say
"fore-um" or something, that would probably work.

Wait...I bet lots of my "F" students could get an "A" in Hacking or Beating the System (in general)...I should ask them :) Now that's being resourceful!
