Dog death family murder charge
12.00, Tue Sep 26 2006

A man has appeared in court charged with attacking the grandfather of a baby mauled by two rottweilers and the murder of his girlfriend.

Scott Walker, 26, was remanded in custody by Leicester magistrates.

John Brightwell, 50, and Debra Larn, 47, were stabbed at their home in Beaumont Leys, Leicester, early on Sunday. Ms Larn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Brightwell is the grandfather of five-month-old baby girl Caydee-Lee who was killed by two rottweilers guarding the Rocket pub in New Parks, Leicester, just hours before the knife attacks. The two incidents are thought to be unrelated.

Cadey-Lee's heartbroken father Ryan Brightwell said he is "in pieces" after learning that his father had been attacked on the same night he discovered his baby daughter had died.

He said: "I rushed to the hospital to find Cadey-Lee was dead. The next thing I know, my Dad is being rushed into the same hospital. I'm told he is critical and his girlfriend is dead.

"It's like something out of a horror movie. It's just too horrible for me to take it all in. I'm shattered - in pieces.

"I just can't believe that this has happened. The two most horrible moments you can imagine and they had happened on the same night.

"I have lost my beautiful daughter, and I nearly lost my Dad, too."

Cadey-Lee was staying at the pub with her mother Amy Deacon and her mother's boyfriend Lee Burchell. The pub is run by Mr Burchell's mother Lesley Glaze.

In a statement issued through police, Ms Deacon and Mr Burchell said: "Words cannot express our devastation at what has happened. We just cannot believe that Cadey-Lee is gone.

"She was such a beautiful little girl. We loved her so much and we just can't accept that something like this could have happened. How do you come to terms with such a tragedy?

"People have been incredible. Our family and friends, and the many people who have left flowers and toys outside The Rocket - it has been overwhelming.

"We would just like to say a thank-you to all those people. Your love and support is a comfort to us during this terrible time."

Police said the guard dogs attacked the baby when they got into the pub's living quarters through a fire escape which had been left open by mistake.

Every time I hear about these fvcking Rots & Pits mauling and killing children, it makes me extremely uncomfortable. Even with a fenced backyard and rules forbidding my children playing there(or anywhere) unattended, the lack of sense displayed by some dog owners is positively shocking. While out riding and sometimes just walking in my neighborhood, I see those breeds tied up out back of some of the houses in the community and have been menaced by ones that have broken free several times. I don't get too scared myself as I know to show no fear, stand my ground and NOT run...plus I'm often accompanied by a 10mm Glock or 4 1/2" Benchmade automatic. My wife was been snarled at and chased once before and I am getting sick of it, frankly.

"After his short-lived stint with The Rolling Stones, Peter got his solo career back on track. During his 1983 tour of Europe Peter unveiled a new instrument to fight against injustice. That instrument happened to be an early 70's Fender® Stratocaster® which he which he had carved into the shape of an M-16 rifle. When interviewed, Pete said of his new instrument: 'This guitar is firing shots at all them devil disciples. Music is my weapon to fight against apartheid, nuclear war and those gang-jah criminals.'"

I have pictures of him playing that very guitar at home. He was a very interesting cat and one of the reasons I guess I'm so into reggae is because the old school roots music reflects a lot of my beliefs...well, short of the whole divinity of Haile Selassie part. Bob, Peter and Bunny were uncompromising paradoxical creatures who refused to align themselves with others despite intense pressure to do so. They were often surrounded by people...but were very private men who enjoyed their own company and sought solitude in natural places. They were very spiritual men...yet they smoked reefer as a sacramental offering and vehicle for unity and closeness to God. They were very political, libertarian-esque men...yet they refused to join one of the two major political parties that sought to claim(and own) them. They were also very peaceful men who sought non-violent resolution to conflicts...yet they knew how to fight like rabid badgers when attacked and backed into a corner. I wish more people were like them, frankly, as it can be very difficult to live well in a society that only wants to accept you as an equal if you conform to the established beliefs of the majority.
