So, 4 Monkeys and a Baboon are racing in the Churn and Burn 24 hour race in Ashford CT. I am the wrench for the team. So far, they have 6 laps in with 2 flats and no major mechanicals.
Treesaw is racing solo, and she has 3 laps in. She came in complaining about poor shifting, and after washing off about 30 pounds of mud, her shifting seems better.
I'll be updating during the race, we have wifi internet here!:happydance:

Ok, so they have done 12 laps and it is now dark. Splat says they have the potential for 36 total laps. Still no major mechanicals :happydance:
Treesaw has trouble with her drivetrain and needs a granny gear. Her wrench is busilly working on her troubles.
The good news is that Harpoon is giving free beer!
Random shots of random riders on the course.

Humanity's Only Hope says they have 11 laps (slackers). The vibe here is really fun.

At the 11 hour point, Team 4MAAB have 15 laps and HOH have 133 laps. They better get their butts in gear!
Reports from the riders are that the course is getting slicker and the mud is getting deeeper in places.
There was an 8 hour college race going on at the same time, and after they finished and left, the promoters put out the good goodies.

Harpoon also was giving out FREE BEER!
Splat and Douglas were taking full advantage.

At the 14 hour mark, the only problems that we are experiencing are mud related. Did I mention it was muddy?
This is what the mud did to Treesaw's drivetrain.

Now that the sun is peeking over the horizon, the racers are complaining that they can't keep any food down.
4MAAB are on lap 26. Keith changed bikes over night, and the bike he rode, the non-drive crankarm came off twice in the same lap.
Treesaw is on lap 8. She has some catching up to do because Sq-earl and Douglas are on beers 9. They drank while she slept.

Sorry, no pics of the Fireline Hotties.
With a little over 2 hours to go, I finally get a riding shot of Splat.

Team 4MAAB are on track for 31 laps, Treesaw is trying to do 9. That means Douglas and Sq-earl will have to drink beer for lunch (like we'll have to twist their arms). :)

Team HOH is 2 laps behind 4MAAB. IAB is done for the race, he is all cleaned up and his bike is loaded on his car. He has designated himself cheering squad. (Kinda nice to be the team captain)

Final riders are out on the course, they aren't letting any more out. Now we just have to wait until they come in to get the standings and then hand out the prizes to the winners.

With 3 riders left on the course, none of ours, 4MAAB did 31 laps with Splat turning in the fastest lap time on the final lap.

I'm back home. Just a quick post here because I need some sleep (no sleep last night).
That course was five miles of hell. The muddiest MTB I've ever experienced. S-L-O-W churning through mud, with lots of slippery rocks and roots. Team 4MAAB pulled in a #4 finish out of 9 teams, and we are trilled with that! Splat's hammer-head of a final lap locked in our position. Splat did 9 laps, I did 8, and Mark and Keith each did 7. I'm so proud of our monkey team! Everyone kicked ass.
Results are not offical and I'll have all the individual times later (along with pics). I'm not sure where Humanity's Only Hope finished, but McGRP01 and Goddy43 will let us know.
Treesaw rox! :) She did more laps than anyone on our team.
Great time! I highly recommend this 24 Hour race if you are in NY or New England and want to try one next year. Good Vibe, great campsites, showers, and lots of free stuff to keep you nourished while racing.
Great job to IAB, IAB's cousin, and to splat for rippin off a 38 minute lap on his 9th lap around one helluva muddy and slippery and sloppy course.
Major thanks go out to Quo Fan and his wife - for Quo's mechanic support and for his wife's words of encouragement. Also major thanks to Dalton Doug for cheering all of us on.
Great job to Tigg and his buddies - they rode great.
And last but not least major major props to Treesaw for fulfilling her New Year's Resolution - doing a 24 Hour Solo and representing really really really well! Great Job T!!!
What a blast!
I'm tired as hell, but happy at the same time.
Time to go watch some soccer.
Looking forward to Next Year!!!

Earl kept himself occupied while TreeSaw was grinding out solo laps. It was nice to have the company of the non-racers around (Doug, Earl, splat's family, and Quo_Fan's girlfriend).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v517/mtbbaboon/Churn%20and%20Burn/IMG_4875.jpg
and our campsite was certainly large enough for everyone. The site fit all our popups, tents and cars very comfortably with plenty of room to spare (things were tight at the Dalton races)

Keith returns from a night lap. He did great, having NEVER ridden at night before. I had light issues on my 2nd night lap. My lights died about 1 mile in, so I ran the entire lap with little backup headlamp. I'm very pised tht my light batteries only lasted about an hour. I mean, WTF. Well, I still managed a 46 minute lap with basically no light.

ohh this felt SOOOOOO nice. The weather reports called for high 50's at night. No way it was that warm. I'm guessing it dipped into the low 40's. It was COLD.

We were battling with an all female team for 4th place. We knew it was going to come down to minutes and Splat volunteered to do our final lap, and we needed a solid lap time. The female team had their best rider going out. MMcG handed the baton to Splat, and the female team followed 2.5 minutes later. Splat threw down the best lap time our team had all weekend with a 38 minute lap! (the bastard HAD to beat my 39 minute one. ) That was a frikkin CLUTCH performance. Way to kick ass, Splat! YAY, we beat the women! :D Seriously though, that all female four person team was impressive. The other eight teams were all men, and the female team hung right there and finish 5th out of 9. It took every ounce of energy we had to grab that #4 spot.
Here's Splat during that final lap. I hollered encouragement to him, and he replied "I'm spent! I've got nothing left and she's right on my ass!" :D Of course, Doug was yelling fake split times to him so he'd keep pushing hard. hahahaha

It should be noted that Mark and Keith were slowed on account of mechanicals and Mark stopping to help fellow riders.

I am feeling ok today. My back is sore and I am coughing and sneezing through my stuffy nose. I am amazed that my legs are functioning. My knee is a little tweeked from my crash (one of many) but overall, I am just tired. I probably should have called in sick today, but atleast it's my easiest day.
As for mechanical issues: flats -- I managed to have 2 flats on course (same lap) and I NEVER get flats! Actually, I didn't have enough air pressure in my rear so I ended up rolling it off the bead and then got a flat on "the" rock; and chain suck -- well, my chain rings (granny and middle) definitely need to be replaced as they are shark toothed pretty badly and chain suck was awful due to the mud.
I am working on my rull report and will put that up this evening.

H.O.H.'s avg. lap times....
Goddy43 = 40mins.
Rob = 1:03mins.
McGRP01 = 48mins.
Jim = 1:09mins.
The night laps really killed us. Both Rob and Jim's second night laps (we pulled doubles at night) were in the 1:45min. range.

Great job guys!! My last few laps I couldn't keep my chain in the middle ring - turns out that underneath all that mud I was missing a chainring bolt! Doh!
I also felt good about helping that female rider, Gail, with her flat tire repair. Her team was battling for a podium spot and she desperately wanted to get her teammate out for one more lap, so I helped her out with my C02 cartridge instead of her having to pump up her tire with a hand pump. I rode behind her most of that last lap to make sure she didn't flat again, but at the same time she also pushed me to ride fast, because she was riding really well. I felt good about helping - that's what it's all about right and I actually think that it helped me ride a faster lap in the end.
Overall, I think our team represented damned well!!!

Oh, and before I forget, BIG PROPS to Ashford Doug for all the support and positive vibes for all the teams this weekend!!! Must be hard to watch the action when you have the heart of a racer. And a personal thanks to him for driving me 1/2 way home so I could nap in the car. Not sure I would have made it alone!! :)
A few more random thoughts.
These types of races are the best IMO - the atmosphere is just awesome.
That campground was great - those warm showers mad a huge difference I think.
I wish I could have spent more time hanging out and chatting with Tigg and meeting more of his teammates.
It is very important to have all of your chainring bolts bolted to the spider of your crankset! Doh!
Quo fan and his girlfriend, Theresa, are great people and Quo is a really great wrench and overall cool dude.
splat has a very supportive wife and kids (they always make it out to watch him race).
Treesaw is badass and bakes killer chocolate chip cookies
Tequila Doug is a good friend and a great guy!
Phil's cousin Keith is also a great guy and I really enjoyed having him on our team. He's also a really strong rider too.
Big wheels help in muddy sloppy conditions.
Riding in the dark without lights is kinda scary.
Riding in the dark as things begin to lighten up enough so you can see where you are going is kinda cool.
Being a part of Team 4 Monkeys and a Baboon - whatever configuration that takes - is a true honor and a total blast!!!

What happened was everyone was clapping for me because i was the last one to finish but i figured everyone did the race, it wasn't just me so i thought i should give them a good reason to clap. No really, my brakes were so logged with mud they didn't grip. i swear i can wheely. I guess I'll never know whether my ass is sore from that or sitting for 24 hours. I was chatting with that guy during the pancake breakfast. He said his toe clips broke off during the race, so he rode flats the rest of the time. He was having a hard time keeping his feet on the pedals because of how slick it was and he really struggled with the climbs because of that. Still, he was doing low-40 lap times. That's pretty damn impressive. This was his 1st 24 hour race and he was loving it.

Out of our team, team ramrod. Myself (joe) and one other rider, todd, had clip ins. jake and john, who were both riding the ironhorse Azurs, were on flats the entire race and have never used clips, EVER. Myself, jake, and john are usually freeriders and and dirtjumpers so thats where the flats come from. The Iron horse bikes were actually demo bikes that i borrowed from the local Iron Horse rep. how nice of him was that? I would highly recomend the bikes. I ended up sharing one with john for over half the race because my dad's bike's (the one that i was borrowing) derailler hanger snapped. this is the first year we did the race with padded shorts too. haha i can sit now. non of us even wore jerseys for the fist half. but the mudd on the camel backs was causeing chaffing so jerseys it is

Nice work! I really should take some time and learn this skill!
in reply to- "Yeah Dane, was on flats , a 38 pound Sinster Free ride hard tail , and pulled 32 Minute laps!!
told me he rode an entire lap , with dreadlock boy.
saw him Yesterday , He has sworn off XC racing forever!!"
splat's got it all wrong. Not only did i NOT swear off XC racing, but i'm thinking of building up an XC-friendly rig for exactly that purpose. The only thing I swore off was 24 hr. misery fests on poorly designed death march courses. destroying an entire drivetrain and contracting a severe elbow (swell-bow)infection from the nasty swampass muck that made up the entire track is not really my idea of a good time, but to each their own, right?

You and Mitchell, put you too on a lightweight XC bikes and you two will be scary !!
so is sinister coming out with an XC bike ? now that would be cool !!
Dane (or anybody else)- they are doing TT's in Whitinsville for the next 3 Weds. if you still have any interest in XC racing......

Isn't that the new Mustang hardtail, I think they have it up on their site...
I got an email from Genesis today and it brought me to their site and then to their photo album, and then to this thread!
That race was a lot of fun!

I'm in favor of more mud. It slows down the speed demons just enough where I can actually be competitive. :D
