View Full Version : Spiedies!
Watched Unwrapped on the Food Network and they had a feature on Spiedies - a southern tier of NYS delicacy - basically marinated meat on a skewer ( could be lamb, could be chicken, could be venison, could be whatever I guess)
They get grilled up and served on an italian roll. Mighty tasty!
Never knew they had such a big festival though. 80,000 people over three days at Spiediefest!

 They're tasty! You can buy the State Fair Speedie sauce in the grocery stores around here too.

Are they somehow more than just skewered meat on a bun?

Ehhh...isn't pretty much every sandwich in the world just "something on a bun"?

I prefer chicken or pork spiedies myself. Never had them before moving to NY but they are very good. The secret is the marinade of course, either State Fair or Lupo's if you're making them at home. I've gone to the festival three or four times just to eat my way from one end of the grounds to the other.

Yeah - but not every sandwich has a festival attended by 80K people. :clue:

never heard of it
I'd never heard of speedies before I joined RM, and honestly, didn't know what one was before this thread. And I live in NY. :o:

State Fair speedie sauce (put out by Salameda) isn't true speedie sauce... Lupo's speedie sauce is the only real speedie sauce.
Lupo's site (http://www.spiedies.com/spiedies.htm)
and for the record, technically it's spelled "spiedies"... but no one actually spells it that way.

Pastie or pasty is more like a meat pie, with crust, not bread.
neener neener!
As in Cornish Pastie.
To me, it reminds me of a Slouvaki on a Bun or some of the non-halal meat shawarma's....
