View Full Version : Independent rebound and compression damping?

So I was sitting there today and designing my dream suspension fork in my head. I got to thinking about damping and I could not figure out how to isolate the compression and rebound oil ports from each other. I got to thinking about shims.

In a shimmed (WTF are shims :D) fork, do the shim stacks bend away from the oil ports under compression (or rebound) and allow oil to pass through? What are the shim stacks made of? After writing this post, I can envision one set of shims controlling the compression damping and another set controlling the rebound damping. Is there a problem with very rapid, sucessive impacts causing the (shimmed) damper to perform unpredictably (because the shims are unable to seal off the oil port quickly enough?

I suppose I could pull my fork apart and learn a thing or three, but I do not have the time to do that and I figure other people can learn from this. So go ahead and post other random damping information / questions, too.

why?
do a search for suspension and tech. been thru it hundreds of times.

the 888RC2X, Fox40RC, Boxxer Team/WC all have Rebound and Hi and Low Compression.
