So a few months back there was some talk of nycbikes.com ( a real shop in Brooklyn, BTW) comming out with a cheapo 29er with sliding droputs. Looks like it could be another budget entry point into the 29er game.
Looks like it's here, in a few incarnations.

A - you'll have to go down and investigate in person. Are these geared toward urban riders and commuters moreso than off road enthusiasts?

Good luck on that EMD on ebay by the way! ;)

It's hard to tell how they are marketing those frames - They are an urban shop, and seem to target that audience though. I'll try to get by there one day.

As for the EMD, it's not my favorite frame, but who knows - I might get lucky with a low bid.

What's on your short list of frames right now??

I've been in the store before. Definitely check it out, and quiz them on their offroad, real-world knowledge of mountain bikes, before buying ANYTHING. That's all I'm going to say...

Yeah, I've been in there myself. Will knows basic bike maintence well, but otherwise - not so much. Thye have a good working knowlege of 3 speed hubs though.

Mark - my short list remains the same: steel & geared.
Just waiting for a few of the newer crop of 29ers (Haro, Raleigh, Jenson) to show up before I drop the cash.

The Mary looks great... I also love the Walt Works.

Walt's overrated in my opinion.

I know 2 guys that have his frames and they have never ever ever had an issue with them in 2 years of hard riding.

I like what little I've seen of Walts work, and his prices are pretty nice, but I think I'd go elsewhere for custom steel.

That's good to know.

He makes good solid frames from the looks of it.

But there are others out there too.

Not too many on the east coast though - which kinda sucks.

Yes, that is the beauty of the 29er hardtail... LOTS of custom builders!!!

Mackie-
Go to Bikeforums and search for feedback on NYCBikes. They seem to be universally reviled.

I've personally seen a few on the street, they look okay but have the worst builds possible.

Walt's a 29" specialist. Knows more about getting a 29"er to work for someone than probably the others combined.
I've got one of his forks, and honestly it's an awesome ride.
I'd go for him with a custom because I trust his judgement as a rider and 29" know-it-all. Also I dig the no-nonsense frames he delivers. Haven't seen one in person yet, but pics I've seen suffice. Awesome fit, fair price, highly rated customer service. You can easily spend more on a fancy bike that doesn't fit as well, costs more and feels like the builders doesn't want you to have a new bike.
