Hey, I am new to biking and would like to get more involved. I am looking for some advise on what type of bike to get (im a little confused). There are some trails in my area (up and downhill) that are available to me to ride and in Tahoe (my second town) there is a downhill mountain with chairlifts. I will also be riding this bike a lot on flat ground (around town). If someone could suggest a a few good bikes for someone with little experience that would be excellent. Also, should I be looking for a freeride bike or what kind? Thanks a lot, and please dont flame.

Any bike will do the job. I think you need to supply a lot more info to get a good answer, like what kind of bike you ride now, what kind of trails, etc...

Thanks for the responce. I live in Sonoma (not too far from you if your in SF). I know any bike will do the job, but I was asking because I am not familiar with bikes and which ones are good to get. Right now I have a Marin that is full suspension but It was bottom of the line and is about 5-6 years old if i remember correctly. Basically, Im asking if someone could list some bikes that are agressive but still good for the money. I was looking to pick up something used (possibly from here or on ebay) hopefully not over $1500.

Well, you are looking for a 6-7 inch bike, coil spring since your budget is limited. A Specialized Big Hit is in this range, although you will have to buy an used one...

Since you are newer, I would suggest a good 5-6 inch travel bike. This will give you a chance to grow with the bike, and not overwhelm you with the travel.
More is not always better, and the all mountain bikes can are great jack of all trades. You can do do pretty much any of the trails in the Bay area on that kind of a bike.
I've ridden N*, Tahoe, Demo, Downieville and Skeggs on that kind of a rig and it does well on the DH side w/o killing you on the way back up.
For your budget a great used bike is good or a select few new rigs rock too.
Giant Reign is a pretty good bang for the buck.
Spescialized Enduro (look for the 05's at Wheelworld 1200-1500 new)
Iron Horse has a few decent offerings as well.
There are other rigs too, but those are a good start.

Santa Cruz Bullit
or
Iron Horse 7point (you probrably won't find a lot of these used, since they are pretty new, but if you can find one used then it should fit you well.)

Ya i would probably go with an all mountain bike as well. 5-6 inches of travel. There are a lot of bikes out there so look around.

I would second the 7 points. It might be hard to find a used one but they look nice. Look on the buy and sell forum here. There are a lot of good deals.
