Ok, so here's the deal. I can get a Cannondale Gemini frame for $80, because it had a crack form in the downtube. The guy had the crack welded back together, but he didn't say anything about heat treating the frame. If I get the frame heattreated, would it basically be back up to norm? The frames paint is pretty far gone, so I'd probably be redoing that as well, would it be safe to powdercoat? I'm hoping someone's done this before, because it's a great deal for me.

Given that you have no idea about the quality of the welding, I'd probably write that one off as being dangerous and not worth it.

$80 saves you a lot on a frame... but once you get the hospital bill from when it cracks and sends you tumbling down a rocky slope, it won't seem like it saved you so much.

Just MHO.

Wasnt there a recall on Geminis because they had too thin tubing a few years back?

second That....

don't even bother..

Aluminum and longevity don't go togheter to well, specially if you already have a crack on it...

put it this way I will even ride it if they pay me for.

take a beer can , find some one to rip it in half (hulk hogan..), find some one to weld it together, now aks your self would u even want to drink out of it? aluminum after welding and heat treating is what makes the frame stiff and strong(plus butted tubes) but cracking then welding changes the properties even with heat treating.
