Ok, picked up a used triple crown fork and tried it out on my Kona Stinky...the steer tube ended up a little more than a quarter inch below the top screw on the stem. :mumble: I am already using a Kore B1B stem for the lower stack height. The headset is a Pig and would like to keep that on there if I could.

I'm trying to get this bike ready for a couple upcoming races and need to get this done pretty quick. The LBS just gave me this deer-in-the-headlight look when I asked them about it.

How hard is it to change out a steer tube and how do you do it? Also, do all steer tubes have the same dimensions?

Maybe something like this could help? Doesn't look too light though.

You can also try getting a new steerer tube pressed in, but I understand this is not so cheap and easy to do. I normally run a few spacers on top of my stems to make sure I always have enough steerer tube to change my forks from bike to bike.

What's your fork model?

Some forks you can replace, some forks you can't.

this is very specific to each model. while replacing steerers are done frequently, it can be expensive and typically done only by the manufacturer.

however, if your fork can take an integrated stem, you might be better off that way. it would be a lower stack height.

again list your fork brand and year, and you might be able to get a new top crown that will accept an integrated stem. i bet it will be cheaper and easier to install than replacing a steerer.

as others have eluded to.. depending on the maufactuer and model fork you might have some options. If its a marzocchi, they will replace it once over the fork's life. Rockshox/Manitou/etc don't replace them to my knowledge.

It's a DNM Volcano (USD-180). The nearest rep is overseas so I think the shipping plus whatever the replacement would cost a bit too much.
