i wish i had some cool story about how i broke it hucking some monster cliff or something but......

my friggin bike rack did it! it's one of those L-shaped racks that you just clamp the frame onto. i had it rigged for my demo but it made the front tire hang level with the hitch. when we pulled into my mom's steep driveway the tire hit the ground and pushed the frame up onto the square steel edge of the rack making a nice dent and slice.

mikedsx is looking into the crash replacement deal from specialized and i don't think it'll be too much 'cause all i need is the front triangle.

i raced XC on it the next day and it held together fine even through some fun and bumpy DH sections. i plan on racing the final local DH race on it July 8th and hope it holds together :help:

oh well....at least we're closing on our house next week :thumb:

Mani - that sucks!

But I guess on the bright side this is a testament as to how burly those frames are. You could still ride it until that crack goes all the way around.

I remember that stress test they did on the show Stunt Junkies where at the Spcialized factory they put Bearclaws frame in the stress dyno - withstood like 12g's or something before the frame bent!

Man sorry to hear that. Before I read your post I was wondering wtf u did...kind of like how the heck did he crash and hit the inside of the triangle... I hope it works out for you.

Ride it, it's not at the end of a tube, and the down tube area on these frames are stupid strong.

If you want to either trade your 500# spring for my 550, or just buy my 550, pm me. I remember that your 500 was too soft. I like the 550, but am gonna get a new bike ASAP, and don't really have much use for the ti spring that's rated so stiffly.

i have dealt with specialized's warranty dept, they are pretty good. Just tell them you fell on a very odd rock... very odd...

But seriously, they might cover that if you talk to the right people:)

ha sorry bro. got one of those killer "community service" deals. 100% fixed (low rate), no pmi and it wasn't VA. couldn't pass it up.

- update on the frame. i had it out at a freeride park today and smacked it pretty hard a few times when i came up short on some stuff. the crack/cut hasn't moved so i'm just gonna keep on riding it. mikedsx has the local specialized rep looking for an '05 front end i can use. i may just ride this one out and save up for an '07 when they start clearing them out of the way for the '08's. we'll see how it holds up at the dark mtn. dh next month.

bikenweed - pm me. if your's is a 550 Ti spring i'll trade you straight up.

I can't believe you are seriously contemplating racing DH on that.

funny coincidence today. we're vacationing in the GA mountains and the dude that checked into the cabin next to me is the N. Florida specialized rep. he checked out my frame and i got the official thumbs up for riding it from a rep. he says that since it doesn't go around to the sides of the down tube it should be alright. still working on getting a front half to replace it but at least i'm not as worried.

i think i'm going to bond-o it just for kicks :D

Holy shozzznit :-D
That is awesome...."go ahead and ride it."
WTF, how many other frames do you know of that can have a huge crack in it like that and the rep will say "eeh, go ride it...it's ok!!!!"

Damn those bikes are solid :)

ummm....the Florida rep...you're gonna trust the "sales" rep...on technical information....on a DH bike...from a guy in Florida...who does sales........????

Get a business card,

:help: Huck your carcass until it breaks and your injured and you'll have free bikes for life....

Someone telling you to use a cracked bike deserves to be canned, and is a liability.

i figure 2 reps and the dude from the tech dept i talked to on the phone (wrote his name down somewhere) is good enough for me. i'm still looking for a replacement but the official word from specialized is that the crack is in about the least stressful place on the frame and it would take a very odd direction of force to finish it off.
"as long as the crack doesn't extend beyond the top of the tube onto the sides of it you'll be ok."

on a DH bike...from a guy in Florida...who does sales........????

ummm..yeah. you know, 'cause those FLORIDA people have no idea what kind of abuse a DH bike takes right?

especially those reps that help build stuff like this....in FLORIDA....they have no clue what-so-ever. :clue: http://freeridesouth.com/pics/pictures/7933.jpg

besides, if i was a sales rep, wouldn't it be more beneficial to tell someone to go buy a new one?

Mine has a dent in about the same spot from a very similar incident. Except my rack flipped down while doing 60 on the freeway. That was a week after I got my demo, been riding it for two seasons now...alls good.

werd...good to hear. a friend of mine just brought up an interesting idea. i live about 5 minutes from bill davis racing (NASCAR dude). he said that they should be able to at least weld the cut for me and since it doesn't protrude around the edge of the tube the heat shouldn't bother it or make it too week. as much as i hate NASCAR, i'm pretty sure they're pretty knowledgeable in aluminum welding
