I know this has been discussed before, but I wanna hear some opinions.
I have been riding vans for the 2 years I have been riding, they used to grip pretty well, however the soles were just too flimsy and often times after race runs I could barely stand my feet hurt too much. So i've set off to find a shoe that grips super well, has a low profile, and a relatively stiff sole for power and just so my feet dont hurt as much.
Here is what I was thinking about-
5.10's- Great grip, super tall sole, not the prettiest
Nike Air Whistler- Supposedly grippy, but i havent heard much about them...any imput?
Lake RS Signature II- Good grip, low profile, toe protection, look decent
Etnies Terranea- Low profile, good grip, decent protection. I'm leaning towards these.
Etnies Roscoe- Havent heard much about them, they look good?
Orchid Van Homan- Heard good reviews, made for bmx so they should work alright...
Any other ideas, good things/bad things about any of these shoes?

get the 5 10's cannot beat them plus they will get muddy so looks are not that bad. Tried DC skate shoes but was not to impressed.
dvs shoes work well. dvs lopez are great. Right now i wear Kenny Anderson;s made by Adio and they grip really well and are pretty comfy, theyll set you back around 60-70 bux.

DVS and Adio shoes suck nutz. I am actually wearing Adios right now, but they suck for DH. Both brands have a really hard sole so you get about zero grip. If you're gonna go w/ regular skate shoes just get Vans because they're softer in the sole.

5.10 is my choice! I like it so much to match with my twentyfourseven pedal.

Yep, I love the style of Adio shoes, but don't ride in them.
I have a pair on my feet right now.
The 5.10's are worth every penny.
And in my opinion the lowtops are only ugly when brand new.
Once you get them good and dusty, they just look like a regular black skate shoe.

the marzocchi 5.10 shoes look killer, and shimano now has a new flat shoe out that is identical to their clip in shoe, the one with the cover over the laces.

I am also interested in shoes... I'll probably just go with 5.10's, but I'm curious about the Nike Air Whistler shoes.

Anyone out there ridden them? How are they holding up? How much are they?
I'll probably just get 5.10's since they seem to be the number 1 choice around here.

The Nikes look gay. And they're Nikes. Why mess with the success of Five Ten?

I love the 5-10 hightops I just got, but I often find myself wishing they were stiffer in the sole's.

5.10's hands down. Your feet stay glued to the pedal, regardless of terrain. I got both the hightops and regular, and love them both. Will never buy a different brand shoe. Oh, and who doesnt think they are pretty. I think they are fairly stylish for bike shoe.

I love my 5.10īs, as said, they grip like crazy... also i think they offer alot better protection than vans-rowley (wich i have used for the last 3 years), especialy when you bang your feet/toes on rocks... but i think that it indeed is a very different thing than riding with "normal" flat-shoes, its sort of "half-spd", it requires a pretty big effort to move your feet around when riding, to find your "sweet-spot" on the pedal... but once you get used to them you find out that you dont need that sweet-spot anymore, you are 100% stuck to the pedal even if only 30% of the shoe touches the pedal!
Sorry for my bag english, hope it helps!

I'm all about 5.10's for flat pedals. Maybe not as stiff as an spd style sole but way more stiff than vans or other skate shoes.

does anyone make an SPD level stiffness sole? i thought about getting a pair of 661 shoes designed for clipless and just leaving the sole alone for riding on flats. however, it looks as though the newer models have the SPD cutout already done for you.

ill pass, i can move plenty fast with flats and i like dabbing so why change what works?
Dude, you should SO try flip flops. the bottoms are soft rubber and would grip like there's no tomorrow! :thumb:

i like my etnies! just make sure you get the waffle tread! ive been rocking mine for about 2-3 years(Sal 23) and they are finally worn out and i need to switch to my other shoes...but these are all broken in...its tough...i hear from some people the 5.10's are too grippy and hard to reposition...i'll stick to skate shoes for now.

5.10's- Great grip, super tall sole, not the prettiest
Nike Air Whistler- Supposedly grippy, but i havent heard much about them...any imput?
Lake RS Signature II- Good grip, low profile, toe protection, look decent
i ahve tried all three of these shoes and this is how it goes
5.10-not a good casual shoe, best for biking stiff and best grip
nike-can be warn casually but with the ankle armor not the coolest-heaviest thing you can wear, smaller and thinner soles, but yet still has amazing grip(not at the standards of 5.10, but up there)-lightest
Lake RS Signature II-not the best grip just a little better then everyday shoes, however they are shoes you could where everyday, the protection is decent, but the shoe wears like a skate shoes, not very stiff ect. they are the less grippe out of the three-medium weight
but a recent mag just voted these top three freeride bike shoes (in other words flat shoe)
