So, angel fire was my first real race on my 29's

+
first run down in the nastiest rock garden this side of the Mississippi
it was evident that they R-U-L-E. i had comments like "you are going
to win this" and "you just skip across the biggest rocks".
The first rock section is about 1:00. i was coming out with so much
speed i would make up i would say 15 secs in that min.
Now for the rest of the track i held my own, even in the fast 30+
corners. i never washed out. motoraptors seem to hold fine.
wheels had no dent and stayed straight even bottoming the rims
with my 150lb marshwiggle size figure.

_

flatted my front @ 35psi after i did 5 runs @40. I had to watch my
lines and if i got off i would flat. that is what happened my race run
40psi. I was and should have used a road tire cut radially to give me
more sidewall. but i still can't wait for my wierwolfs.:nopity:

Damn... a flat. You looked pretty fast on the video posted in the DH forum, and those rocks did look like wheel-eaters...

I could imagine. Good news, I will be home the 1st, and I need some help with a wheel. I will come out to Fritch, then we shal ride.

I'm diggin your green brain bucket!

So you raced on 2.1 Motoraptors?

Why not 2.3 Exiwolfs - not enough knobbiness to them?

So really the only missing element right now are some tires to truly handle a rocky DH type of course huh? Sounds like it to me at least.

Way to push the envelope Alex!

yeah, tires. i tryed exi's but they had no side knob.
that is what you need for dh. i cut out the small middle
knob to open up the moto in the front only.

you alway want more front traction than rear so the rear
breaks first and puts you in a flatrack turn.

and forks for the masses later.

So that new Weirwolf 2.55 should be a tasty tire for you to try out on the DHin 29er right??

I forgot about forks. whoops.

Daring stuff, great report!

Really, if the Weirwolfs aren't going to hit within a month, just do a simple frankentire. I bet with your tech skills you have one working before you need a 3rd beer. First one the eady way, later the hard way.
Cost : (1) knobby 26x2.8 knobby, and (1) Big Apple 28x2.35".
Flat THAT!

Sweet! It'll be nice to see 29ers make their way into DH.

alex is that an old dh2 from the 2x4 days with some limiter in there or is there more to it than that?
(curious because of the "forks for the masses" comment)

no, its a 2006 groove with teh travel reduced to 6'' and
lowered in the crown as far as i could go. plenty of travel
for the 29ers.

my last dh2 was red. this one feals way better and is stiffer too.

Awesome, Weirwolfs are great tires. This could be really cool to have 29" wheels, but dammit, I already have a bunch of 26" bikes, and wheel/forks will no longer be compatible! That, and if everyone switches over to 29, us poor folk stuck to 26 will get ruined at the races!
