I crashed over the bars on some dirt jumps two weeks ago and landed on my face while wearing a skate lid. I've noticed that my balance and timing are just a little off. I have trouble matching the landings on some of the more tech. jump sections.

Question: What can I do to heal up quicker?
Does it just take time, or is there something I can do?

I've gone back to dirt jumping, but have stayed away from the bigger ones for now. I feel about 80%-90%.

Yes I do have a couple nice full face helmets.

Thanks
Tim

Nothing you can do, only time can help with any head injury. Best not to rush it, as even a small blow can make things much worse if you have an existing injury.

OK thanks.
Maybe I'll try out the old Playstation for a while.

Best is to rest now. While the playstation may seem like your taking it easy, it is actually very hard on the eyes. If your having some issues with your depth perception the worst thing you could be doing is entensly staring at a TV or computer monitor. Rest, maybe some easy trail rides or hikes but mostly rest. It takes awhile to get back sometimes and cannot be rushed.

All right then. It's raining here now. Sounds like a good time to do some trailbuilding and get things fixed up for when I start riding again.

Here's something funny. I went shopping for a new skate lid. After hitting three different skate shops I found that none of them sell helmets anymore. The kid behind the counter gave me a puzzled look when I asked. I guess safety isn't cool.

i doubt your injury was bad enough to still have you off.. my guess is paranoia is what causing you to jump like a spaz. I went out the other day after fuggin up my shoulder, hadnt jumped in about a month. i was all over teh gawd damn place. over shooting squirrely as all hell..

Great advice doc.

TWISTED: stay off the bike, rest up, and talk to a doctor, if you haven't already. Head injuries, even slight, can be VERY bad if you wreck again - and since you're "off", this has a greater chance of happening.

Good luck!

I never said he didnt hurt his head,, nor did I say to start going big and just suck it up. He never said anything about being dizzy and what not when off the bike. Whos not sketchy when they get back into something that they got wadded up on the last time....

I agree. The only way you'll get your confidence back is through some rest and off time. Take it easy for awhile, getting two head injuries in a short amount of time is bad news. I always get told 6-8 weeks to be "safe" to fall again.

btw, try asking this question on mtbr.com.

I'm not scared at all. If I was I'd just wear the full face. This is my 8th concussion after 31 years riding.

I can just tell that I'm not quite right in the head (no jokes).

its not that your scared,, just gotta knock the cob webs loose, you may think that your mentally stable, but the body's got natural preservation to keep you from doing too much stoopid chit. ive crashed sport bikes a handful of times, just gotta get back in the groove,, and i know you know that already.

is that you're way of describing a concussion? he is obviously still experiencing the physical trauma and symptoms (which can potentially last for months). Do you think a doctor would say 'shake it off'?

look at boxers; their careers are limited by the number of concussions they have. Theres a point where the damage is permanent.

Twisted: go see a damn doctor (again if thats the case)

I'm not in THAT bad a shape. I did a three block downhill manual the other day. I can still ride and dirt jump fine, but am just doing it from memory. It's when the unexpected happens, I'm not quite as quick to correct it as before. Like a bump or hole in the lip will screw me up, or I was doing look back whips and when I'd turn around straight to land I was all disoriented.

I'll just chill for a couple weeks. Maybe some easy trailriding.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m pretty stubborn when it comes to going to the hospital or doctor after an injury. However, when it comes to a head injury, I would say that you might want to consider going to the doctor. I’m not a doctor, so my advice to you is, go see a doctor.

you dont have to be. But i think you're showing a good lack of common sense here, you know somethings not right but you just want to bury your head in the sand and let your internet friends make the diagnosis that everythings fine....

didnt you learn anything in highschool gym class? I was always told to man up and walk it off

you guys read way to deep into some posts.. never did I say "your fine, pick up your sack and carry it like a man, stop buing a pus$y,, blah blah blah...." obviously coming off a injury your gonna be a bit off.. take your time to get back to full swing, if that means taking a few weeks off then do it.. if your that much of idiot that you cant tell whether or not your feeling better, you are probably more well off smacking you head and ending your life and turning into a vegetable. i have no remorse for dumbas$es

Yup. Sounds like something is up.

I'd at a minimum just lay on your couch and do nada. Couple weeks anyway. And no TV or Playstation either too active/stressful on your CNS.

Post or two ahead of me had it right: injury on top of existing injury is not good. (JD)

Call your PCP and get a referal to a neurology doc to check you out. A sports head injury specialist ideally. Just the fact you'd post a thread on it should be a :clue:

I am getting much better, I can tell. I couldn't even ride after the crash. I'm sure I'll be 100% eventually. I was just curious if I'd heal quicker from rest or by pushing myself.

I'm not going to waste $1,000 to hear a doctor tell me to stay off that damn bicycle.

Some of you may have seen my crash at the Go Huck Yourself Jump Jam. I tried to boost extra high and transfer all the way to the right near the spectators. Andy Sundbaum was following me with a helmet cam. I got more height than distance and caught my front tire on the lip of the landing. I was on the green Tonic Fall Guy.

fantastic, so self-diagnosis is the key...you should write a book: "Neurology for Dummies"....

i self diagnose AND self medicate too, nothing like a handful of vicodin and 6 pack to take the edge off....

$1000 ?

You jump/DH and have no insurance ?

Or, is that some sort of co-pay ?

Yeah, co-pay. I've got crappy insurance.
Last summer it cost me $400 after I cracked a finger. That's a lot of money that could be used on bike parts, beer and, women.
