What color are you?

don't know, don't care. Just thought it was interesting that the guy saying it thought we were a different something.

I experienced a good deal of prejudice when I was younger, but it seems to only happen once every few years now.

The most amazing was when I visited my now ex-wife, then g/f's family for the first time in Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1989 (we lived in Florida). We entered their home, grandmother came up very friendly, welcomed me to her home, and immediately told me they bought bagels. Racist? Who cares, I love bagels, so cool.

Then I met her father (college music teacher) and one of his students (~20yo) who straight-faced asked me where my horns were.

I remember the first time I toured the south - coming from Oakland CA. Very strange to meet people that go out of their way at all times to show that they are racist. It's like being on Mars down there.

I met a lot of southerns who thought, just cuz I be jew, I was different somehow. But I didn't think a one of them was really racist. Not really.

This section got me hooked, although the article itself is pretty long winded.

A colleague and I were doing a workshop on racism and we wanted to divide the gorup into a caucus of people of color and a caucus of white people, so that each group could have more in-depth discussion. Immediately some of the white people said, "But I’m not white."

I was somewhat taken aback because although these people looked white they were clearly distressed about being labeled white. A white, Christian woman stood up and said, "I’m not really white because I’m not part of the white male power structure that perpetuates racism." Next a white gay man stood up and said, "You have to be straight to have the privileges of being white." A white, straight, working class man from a poor family then said, I’ve got it just as hard as any person of color." Finally a straight, white middle class man said, "I’m not white, I’m Italian."

My African-American co-worker turned to me and asked, "Where are all the white people who were here just a minute ago?" Of course I replied, "Don’t ask me, I’m not white, I’m Jewish!"

Did I say everyone? No.

It is very strange to meet overt racists for the first time. I had no direct experience until the late 80's.

Example: first time we arrived in Savanah GA. We got to town early, and a friend of the promoter offered to take us swimming (super hot that day)

His girlfriend pipes up - "We don't go to the public pool though, the water is dirty from the n*ggers swimming in it."

I told her to go fvck herself.

This is something I've encountered every time I've been to the south since. Not everyone is like this, but those people who are make SURE you know what they think.

I guess out in CA the racists just keep it bottled. In the south they just come right out and say it.

It's pretty fvcking disgusting.

very true. it seems that everyone is worried about someone else saying something that could offend yet another third party.
Plenty of examples jsut from this forum.
As far as reacism goes, I grew up here in VA and didn't encounter it till high school. Oddly enough it was all the other races making fun of white people, cause that's totally OK. We just can't do it back to them.
Two eye opening experiences,
taking my Filipino (ex) fiance to meet my great grandmother, great grandmother says "she's a sweet girl, ......but she's colored" Well duh. Visiting rural Ohio, not far away from what aparently is the home of the Arian Nation, I felt far more uncomfortable there than I did in brooklyn at 3am.

Yeah, I think that was like 7 years ago...and they went to jail forever. Id be willing to bet that more whites are killed by blacks per year than the blacks by whites tho.

Well considering whites are what, 60% of the population that's a pretty safe guess. I'd also guess too that you're more likely to be murdered if you're black. However without any sort of context my statistical speculation is just as meaningless as yours.

7 years is very little time if you're hoping for attitudes, fears and prejudices to change.
