View Full Version : 31.8 bars aluminum vs carbon
looking for 31.8 to replace my 25.4 Protapers possibly.
is Carbon good for DH raceday only ?
Or can they be run daily w/o issues ?
Any suggestions on bars ? Right now it is standard vs OS Answer Bars on the list.
i had the 25.4 Easton DH carbon bars for 3 years. beat the **** out of them. then got a oversized stem this year, and decided to try the FSA 31.8 carbon bars. riding the same big gaps and drops i did before. working great. other then i really need to cut them down.
also working great on every is the Boxxer WC.

some ppl worry and change them ever soo often, one of my riding mates has been using the same carbon bar for the past 2 years with no problems. i used to use some carbon/alu bar for 3 years, i only changed them coz they were too small and they were a bit scrached up. now on easton monkey lite xc bars. and the vibration reduction is amazing!! use them, you would love em.
edit: i would go for eastons coz they have alot of experience with carbon and put alot of tech into their work. they also look sick. :thumb:

There are no restrictions from manufacturers that I've seen about when you should run carbon bars. They are designed for heavy use and are almost assuredly overbuilt. I don't use them (because of cost) but I know lots of people that have used FSA and Easton carbon bars with great success.
If you want an Al. bar, I'd recommend ProTapers, Eastons or (my current favorite) Holzfellers. The Holzfellers are reasonably light, have a good feel, low rise and nice big width.

Forget oversize,it's a marketing wank.
Easton Carbon 25.4.

I prefer OS because more stems are available and the bars are noticeably stiffer. That said I like to run 25.4 for DJ for vibrations but on a DH bike I like em stiff.

Would 25.4 flat bars not be stiffer with just back sweep?

Flat bars with no rise just back sweep.Forks are so high now why do you need rise accept for the dampening of the spring from the bend. A few companies make wide strong ones.
