View Full Version : SRAM X-Gen front der won't shift from 22 -> 36

SRAM is telling me this won't work. I just want to confirm.
I have a hone 2 ring crankset. I'm using the 22t ring that came with it and I swapped out the 32t ring that came for it with a 36t RF ring. This setup was shifting fine on my old bike with an XT front der.
I've tried moving it up, moving it down, everywhere in between. It comes close to trying to push it up to the bigger ring but it never quite makes it.
Should I switch back to an XT front der?

I don't use SRAM stuff, but have you backed off the limit screw all the way, and tried increasing your cable tension?
Also, have you tried setting it up such that it takes two clicks to go from small ring to big ring? It may not be a pretty shift, but it's not like you'll be shifting it between those chainrings on the fly a whole lot. I had my XT stuff set up at one point so that I clicked twice to get it to upshift and clicked back down once to get it to stop rubbing.

I have tried messing with the limit screws and no matter how I set them I still get the same issue. It's like the der is not lifting the chain up, but just trying to push it into the side of the bigger ring and that's not working.
I'm not sure I follow you about the "2 clicks" and it doesn't really sound like that's an ideal setup.

Well, the shifters have three positions for three chainrings, right? So instead of having normal cable tension and having one shift bring you to the next chainring, you back off your cable tension a bit and use two shifts to bring you further than one normal shift gets you.
The derailleur isn't really supposed to lift the chain up much, it's supposed to push it into the ramps and pins on the side of the chainring, which will pull the chain up. Perhaps you don't have a ramped and pinned chainring? Did you get a normal chainring intended to be part of a crankset, or did you get a "guide ring" intended for use as a single ring?

BV, thanks for the assistance. I gave up and went to my LBS. The tech there had it shifting smooth in no time.
My main problem was that the high limit screw was dialed in too far. I thought that the resistance I felt when trying to shift from 1 -> 2 up front was from something binding or not being setup properly, in reality it was because the limit screw was keeping it from going far enough. Lesson learned.

I was talking about using rsync for backups, when you could use a reliable backup solution, like uh, Netbackup.

It hasn't failed us yet. And it didn't cost a cent. :)
