Ok I picked up a UST wheelset and some UST wheels..I hear you're not supposed to use a lever which isn't that bad putting them on...just use some soapy water but what I'm clueless on is

How do you inflate the tires?
How do you take them off!?

your not supposed to use a lever to take em off??? My new bike has tubeless, but I have yet to take a tire off....or even screw with it

Thats what I've seen in writeups..prying up on it could damage the bead leading to unsecure lock on next install?

Soap-sud up the rim and the tire bead. (Lots of bubbles from dishsoap; use a dish brush to apply.) Install the tire by hand. Put the bead on one side, then make sure it's in the deep center channel. Since it's on the smaller-diameter center of the rim, you'll have some slack you can use to pull the tire directly up. Pull this slack up and seat the opposite side bead. (Add Stan's prior to seating this bead, if you're using sealant.)

Make sure both beads are in the center channel, and inflate. I've always gotten a floor pump to work. Just pump fast for a bit, and mush the tire around a bit if it's not inflating at first. Keep pumping until all the bead has seated-usually takes quite a bit of pressure. You'll hear it snap into place, and see an even sidewall height around both sides.

To remove the tires, deflate (duh) and push the bead into the center channel again. You're supposed to use your hands, but that's only possible on some tires for me...I do use a plastic lever if need be, just to get them started off the rim. Try and see what's best for you, but do know that using a plastic lever, minimally and gently, doesn't seem to spontaneously destroy your tires or their UST-ness.

I didn't like Stan's tubeless system at all, but UST does it for me.

Thanks!

You're just tubeless by itself? I was thinking about just putting some stans in for some extra security. I'll only run tubeless during the race season.

I use Stan's with it, every time. Only makes sense to have some puncture protection. I just didn't like the Stan's Tubeless rimstrip system. The goo is great when used with UST.

Don't see why you'd only use it during race season, though. Why not use it all the time (unless you're looking for resistance training, I guess...)?

I'm on the east coast and the rocks are HARSH...I'm also not the smoothest person so I have a feeling the tubeless with blowout on my many times.

I'll wager you'll find the UST will give you less flats than your tubes in the rocks...unless you bash your wheels into dinged-up squares.

I had Stan's rimstrips 'blow out' on me all the time (on landings and under hard cornering), but never UST. I will say that you'll want to run adequate pressure in your UST tires, though. I ran 28-32 lbs in my Michelin USTs and had no problems with traction, rolling speed, or flats/dings in my rim. Don't go too low, or you'll kill the wheels.

IMHO, you should train with tubeless so that nothing's a surprise come race time, either on the ride or the maintenance side.

I have my ust set up with no stan's, it is fine for here cuz there aren't any thorns and not much sharp rocks either. I was also able to pump my ust up with a floor pump.

Get a maxxis rim strip for $5 and a bottle of stans. Done.

So I guess I have to buy a "custom" valve stem and sealant from stans? Is that it?

Huh? Just buy the Stan's and pour it in the tire, according to the directions, prior to setting the second bead. It doesn't go through the valve (like Slime would in your car tire or bike tube...)

I run Maxxis UST tires with Maxxis rim strips. I haven't had any problems installing with metal (intense branded) tire levers. That said, there is a technique to installing. 3 levers and small increments are best. Keep the tire in the center channel of the rim. So if you can get them on without levers, go for it.

Tire installing MX tires sometime. DH tires are easy.

I have rims with no valve stems thats what I mean. How the hell do I inflate? and whats with the rim strips? I thought I don't need any strips.

Then you weren't sold a complete wheelset. Get the seller to give/send you the valves. They just push through the rim from the tire side and screw down with a collar on the spoke side, using little o-rings for airtightness. There's a Schraeder adapter included, as well.

We covered this. Just soap it up, set the tire in the center channel and pump them up. You don't need rimstrips. Other people (Fraser) are just trying to say their system's cooler than yours.

Thanks again, I like most people getting into the tubeless scene am nearly clueless but one day...one day I'll be able to pass on this knowledge and try to make my system cooler than others

Oh, there's a tubeless 'scene?' Gives me shivers to think about...some kind of horrible nightclub where everyone's trying to be cooler than the other guys (yeah, it's a sausage-fest in here...)

Apparently, that's Transcend, smeared in Stan's goo and wearing a ballgag and thong made from a maxxis rimstrip. He's dancing in the very small cage...
