I know South Lake Tahoe is far from you, but this year our track in town is going to try and get more mountain bikers to race there.

The Firestone race is April 28-30th down here in the SB area. It's a 3-hour drive from SC but it's worth it IMO. Last year all the SC heads came down and owned it. Erik, Aaron and Mike took 1,3,4 in expert IIRC. It's a fun fast course for sure.

We also have another local race in early June, the SB bike festival. This a small race with an easier course but we did add some new features this year and it should be super fun. Great course for a dual slalom bike or a hardtail.

Cal State DH Champs are June 4th in Fontana. I think top 15 qualify for Mammoth there too. :)
And Sand Hill tends to have a dual slalom/mountaincross series of about 5 races in the fall. Wait until August for them to get a schedule up.

Anyone know where the closest BMX track to Santa Cruz is?

BMX?! That's for guys who can't ride a big bike or are scared of it. Take a hike pal.

Thanks for the constructive tip. I happen to have a big bike, and I'm not even scared to ride it. I also happen to be interested in DS/Mtn-X, and, silly me, I thought that practicing on a BMX course might actually be helpful for technique. Thanks for setting me straight.

I keep a list of all NorCal MTB races over at http://norcalmtnbikeracing.blogspot.com/
There are a few other DH/MTX races that you are missing: Sandhill Racing in June, the Hoopa races in Humboldt, Downieville, etc.

Yeah its a pretty cool race. Very beautiful, some good tech sections. Unfortunetly its up past Redding, which is quite a trek from the Bay. But Ill be there this year for sure.

The SB bike fest is coming up on Saturday June 3rd. It is a new event in it's 2nd year and it did get slagged pretty hard by some last year. This year will be TONS more fun as the course is chaged heavily, however it is still a relatively short/pedally course. Hardtails and slalom bikes are PERFECT, DH bikes have no place here even though it's a "DH" race. I warned people of that last year but many still brought their sleds only to later complain that their bike was overkill when they were warned... Also the XC course is rad.
It's a fun race, come down if you want to test your fitness and cornering abilities.
