You could add vertical pieces of lexan on side for more water prtection. You could even coat is with something to make sure all the seams are sealed.

You may get a few funny looks at the otter with this thing.

It wouldn't weigh much at all: just some thin alumium tubing and and sheet from a hobby shop and 4mm lexan. It wouldn't interfere with the view finder if you made it right.
