Last week i had a funny crash. There's an elevated stretch of trail that is built on a skinny bunch of whoops. It's actually pretty techy... Either side slopes if you go off the trail you're falling 5 to 10 feet into bushes. A tiny garter snake was on the crest of one of the whoops, at the last second i turn my front wheel and try to skirt the side of the spine, off the trail and upside down i slowly unclip, get off the back of my head by kicking my legs over from above me. Crawl back up and fetch that stupid snake that was sunning itself and put it on a stump off the side of the trail.

I love this thread. Sometimes I wish I had somebody like Splat to follow me around and document my monumental F'ups. I'd show the pictures to people at work when they ask "why are you covered in mud and bleeding?"

Take this morning's commute for instance... A couple of days ago I found a nice 3' high retaining wall that lands in a nice transition so I've worked it in to my regular daily commute. It's not a straight drop. You actually have to ride up on one side of the wall and ride it like it's a skinny and then drop off the far end. Getting on the wall is kind of technical. You have to hop up and then make a sweeping 90° turn (on a 9" wide cinder block wall. Then you have to pedal like hell down the skinny and wheelie drop off the end. Yesterday my back tire fell off the low side of the wall and I had to abort, gently stepping off the bike. Today I was focused on not letting my back tire fall, and just when I thought I'd made it my front wheel went off the edge of the high side and I went over the bars, fell 3' feet and rolled head over heels to the bottom of the transition. When I got up and turned around I found that my bike was resting perfectly the edge of the wall balanced on the bottom bracket housing.

It didn't really hurt too bad considering I wasn't wearing any pads other than a helmet. I did manage to jab my thigh with my keys and tweak my back a little. But I am quite certain that it would have been very photogenic and I'm sure that the people waiting at the stop light at the bottom of the hill found it pretty amusing.



EDIT: I just opened my backpack and pulled out the banana I packed for lunch. It did not survive the fall. Ewwwww! However, the ham sandwich is unscathed, thank you tupperware.

Last Wednesday, I wrecked myself pretty good. I slipped a pedal and went down going somewhere between 20 and 30 mph and slid sideways into a rock. I caught the rock on my left hip. Here's the result:

Day 0 - 2 hours post crash. Tis only a flesh wound.

If your doctor ever says they need to do a stress x-ray, punch them directly in the face.

Fell during practice at highland this past weekend and hurt my thumb pretty good. Went to the ER, said I likely had an Avulsion fracture, where the ligament pulls off the bone and takes some with it. They splinted me up and scheduled me up at the hand doctor today.

Went in there today, and they said the ligament most likely snapped. They were testing it by doing this test where, if you took your left hand, put it on a table, pinky down, hand verticle, thumb out, as if you were holding a glass. Looks like this:

Then, looking straight down at your thumb, use your other thumb to hold the big knuckle, and twist the top of the thumb clockwise to see how much lateral rotation you get. Should be maybe 10*. In the office, mine was around 20*, hurt like hell. They wanted to take a stress x-ray to see what was going on. Fine, sure, do it up.

We head on over to the xray room, the nurse suits up in lead, ready to do the same thing. Only by 'stress x-ray', they don't mean nicey nicey like back at the office, oh-ho-ho-no:

They twist that puppy to see how far it goes. Around this time I thought I had started making out with the nurse, since she was kind of cute. Turns out I was just coming back from almost blacking out. The nurse said afterward that she thought it might have gone all the way around, and was freaked out by it. Worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life.

So yes, going under the knife next friday to hook that baby back up. Put a small hook into the bone, put some thread through the ligament, pull it around the hook and we're ready to rock. Minus the 2 months in a cast and then 2 months of PT after that.

I asked if I could ride, she said yes, but not with your thumb (after the surgery), light stuff. I'm totally going into surgery with an ODI grip to see what they can do.

So much for my last collegiate season. I'll be there cheerleading for the guys.

Dan got back on the bike first and beat me to the finish, bastard. If I had just taken the high line, I would have passed FTW, but I knew he was ahead of me so I dove in to take the low-high line in hopes I'd cut him off at the exit. Little did I know he'd wreck right in front of me. Serves me right for trying to use strategery in a race.

Just to explain one thing, the reason I banked so hard to the right is that there is a 3 foot rock drop that I was trying to avoid. I tryed to make it to the right of the tree, and as you can see I didn't make it.

yep. only banged his knee though; one of his pad straps came undone somehow and he banged it up pretty good. launched off the rock you can see to the right (his right) of his rear wheel, planning to clear the whole thing. it's doable, but needs more speed than he had. his back wheel juuuuust kissed the rock a bit further out.

obviously that was enough. :)
