You are putting way to much thought into this. Some people just never get comfortable jumping with flats. I have been riding Dh with flats for years and I think I progressed more in the 1 1/2 months I wore clipless last year than any other time. Just helped me feel more conected to the bike, literaly.

If you go cliplees go with either the time or crank brothers platforms. Both work abut the same and are good in the mud, which is important for SS

The Shimano DX clipless with the black resin cages. I like the adjustment of release with the SPD's.
