I am looking at the 2-ring beefy bash version of the Hone cranks, and I ride a burly hardtail. Anything else I should consider (I do not have a ton of money to spend).

There are 2 differant version of the hones

The tripple ring hones are exactly the same as the LX cranks, aluminum spindle and no pedal inserts.

The hones with the bash guard has a steel axle and steel pedal inserts and is much stronger. They are usually a few dollars more then the LX or tripple ring hones and a bit heavier.

Thanks man thats good to know.

EDIT: changing thread title.

I bent the right arm slightly on my FSA V-Drives (came with bike) so I am looking around for some more cranks. I weigh 170# and am almost smooth, I ride a hardtail.

The Hones are attractive because Shimano seems to have always made solid cranks, plus these have the outboard/integrated setup. I see good deals on Hussefelts and RF Evolve DHs but the Hones are lighter and stiffer I would imagine.

I cannot find the 2-ring Hones online, maybe I am just not looking hard enough.

EDIT2: can I change the thread title?

Cambria has them, same description and image as the xc ones though. http://www.cambriabike.com/Shopexd.asp?id=20675

EDIT3: I searched and this has been done to death. Silly me.

That site has the wrong pic. The The FC-M601-2 is the 2 ring one that you want. I just put a pair of these on my Transition Vagrant hardtail.

As mentioned they are the better ones that are beefier and stronger. Don't know about price as I got them from the bike shop I work in for cost.

I got the 3 ring Hones but mine seem to have the steel BB spindle but lack the pedal inserts...sort of a bastard pair at least according to what Shimano lists as available.

I think mine have the steel spindle, but not the pedal inserts. So far so good without them, and it's on my dj/ park/ trail bike...

If the best price you can get is around $180 for the Hone/LX set, I say get the Saint. You can get brand new sets for ~$150-170.
