Bill Clinton advises Dubai as Hillary attacks its US ports deal
Mar 02 10:11 AM US/Eastern
Former president Bill Clinton has privately advised Dubai officials (http://news.ft.com/cms/s/60414c4c-a95e-11da-a64b-0000779e2340.html)how to address US political concerns over a controversial ports deal, as his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, publicly attacks the deal.
Dubai Ports World bid to takeover Britain's P and O, which runs terminal operations at six major US ports, has triggered a political firestorm in the United States.
Senator Clinton has voiced vigorous opposition to the 5.7-billion-euro (6.8-billion-dollar) takeover, saying it threatens US national security.
She is attempting to push legislation through Congress that seeks to block the deal, partly on the grounds that DP World is foreign-government owned.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported Thursday her husband -- who it said was paid 300,000 dollars in 2002 to address a summit in Dubai -- has advised Dubai officials how to soothe US concerns over the deal.
"Mr. Clinton, who this week called the United Arab Emirates a 'good ally to America,' advised Dubai's leaders to propose a 45-day delay to allow for an intensive investigation of the acquisition," the FT said, citing a spokesman for the ex president (http://www.townhall.com/opinion/columns/robertnovak/2006/03/02/188380.html).
DP World has agreed with the White House to undertake a more lengthy review process of the deal, despite already received government approval for it to proceed.
The takeover would see DP World run ports at Baltimore, Miami, New Jersey, New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia.
A court in London was due to give a ruling on Wednesday on the legality of DP World's takeover of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co.
Looks like its a done deal now though:

Sen. Clinton: Rove obsesses about me

ALBANY, New York (AP) -- Reacting to a new book quoting Karl Rove as saying she will be the 2008 Democratic nominee for president, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that President Bush's chief political strategist "spends a lot of time obsessing about me."

OK... I am fuzzy on something... Why would we need ANY foreign company to manage our ports?
I am guessing that the ports and thier management is a private corporation thing (Not owned by gov't), right? So, is there no qualified or competent company or people here in America that can do the job? Is this all just more Bush evil in an attempt to make his friends even richer?
I just don't understand all this politics stuff... :ouch: :nonono:

P&O (prior owner/manager of the ports in dispute) is a PRIVATE company. the house of lords or commons, or tony blair, or any other powdered wig-wearer has no say in its operation.
contrast this w/ the proposed owner, which as i understand it, is controlled by the Dubai (UAE) government.
i don't care if the next prospective owner was controlled by the government of *any* country. keep it in private business hands.

My question on this has always been is there not a US company that is capable of running US port operations? With all the uproar lately over outsourcing, you'd think they'd at least try to find a US company to do this...I mean doesn't Haliburton have a division that can do this :)

Nothing wrong a senator speaking against it.
Something wrong about these two people sleeping together and not knowing something is up.

A) Just what you hear? I don't think I have to go there.
B) I can't for the life of me figure out why a liberal would go on a pro-government rant right now. Bush is in the white house. Conservatives have majorities in both houses of congress. Bush just put two very conservative justices on the Supreme Court, thereby swinging the balance in a lot of tight cases...Yeah, I can see why liberals would be singing the praises of the government right now....

The ignorance of the American public is not Bush's fault. The steps that he has taken to paint an us vs. them dynamic are his fault. Where one stops and the other begins, I can't really say. I wouldn't go so far as to say that this particular case is all Bush's fault, but certainly his rhetoric only added fuel to the fire.

Yeah, and he also compared this to the Crusades. He's talked about how god (not allah) called him to defeat this evil. He's also linked a secularist Arab country (Iraq) to the extremists and attacked them, which would tend to confuse people and make them think that all Arabs are bad.

I don't know, maybe it was the fact that you were answering my quote and saying "you guys" that gave me the idea that you were calling me racist.
I hope "you guys" includes all the Republicans who have the same fears about this deal as the other nebulous people in the "you guys" and "you bunch".

Hillary Clinton 'unaware' of Bill's Dubai ties
Stephanie Kirchgaessner
Financial Times
Updated: 3:12 a.m. ET March 4, 2006
Hillary Clinton, a leading opponent of DP World's takeover of some US port operations, was this week forced to admit that she did not know her husband had advised Dubai leaders on how to handle the growing dispute.
But former President Bill Clinton's ties to Dubai and the United Arab Emirates should not have come as a surprise to his New York senator wife.
Mrs Clinton's own senatorial financial disclosure forms reveal that her husband earned $450,000 giving speeches in Dubai in 2002.
Officials from the UAE also donated between $500,000 and $1m to fund Mr Clinton's presidential library in Arkansas.
It was part of an effort by the emirates, said a person close to UAE officials, to forge a close relationship with a former US president who is influential and highly regarded in the region.
Mr Clinton's admiration for the UAE was last on display in November, when he made his fourth visit to the American University in Dubai and met students participating in the Clinton scholarship programme.
The UAE has also contributed $100m to Hurricane Katrina relief funds – which Mr Clinton had a leading role in raising.
Mrs Clinton's tough stance that the deal represented an "unacceptable risk" to national security has caused UAE officials some consternation.
Regarded as the leading Democratic candidate for the 2008 presidential elections, she has used the deal – which polls show is disliked by most Americans – and the anti-Arab sentiment it sparked to attack the Bush administration on national security, an issue that has been seen as a weak point for Democrats.
Although Mrs Clinton has been careful not to criticise the UAE directly, her stance has put her in the same camp as legislators who openly accuse Dubai of helping to finance the September 11 terrorist attacks and deem the UAE untrustworthy.
Privately, some Democrats see the revelations about his ties to the UAE as a classic Clinton dilemma. Mrs Clinton told the New York Post on Thursday that she did not know her husband had been contacted by Dubai officials two weeks ago and offered them advice on the deal. Although both Hillary and Bill Clinton say he stands behind her on the issue and there is no direct conflict, his relationship to the UAE has complicated her political stance on the transaction.
Meanwhile, the UAE has sought to quell the backlash against the takeover by hiring some Clinton officials to lobby on Dubai's behalf.
