Ok so Im havin this moral delema and I figured since you all have such high moral superiority I figured you could help me out a bit.

Heres the skinny. The whole Roc urban crew was out riding last thursday, we did our jam and then headed to the bar to get shanked as we normally do. At the bar another of our fellow monkey's picked up this drunk chic and was gettin a bit freaky with her in the bar. He wandered off to the bathroom or to get a drink I dont know and when he got back another one of our crew, my roommate to be exact(not a monkey) had his tongue down her throat. Either way she decided to stick with him and they started to develop some sort of meaningless relationship. She came over saturday, things went well, long story short she was on my couch eating waffles sunday morning. Sunday night this chic I know come over to chill, and hes goin on about how great this other chic was and finally heads to bed. She turns to me and says " I know that girl, She broke up with her last boyfriend of 2 yr's because she found out that not only is he bi-sexual, hes a male prostitute and had been having sex with men for money the whole time" Theres no confirmation on the disease status but odds are you dont live that kind of life without catching something. Im leaving work in a bit and I dont know what I should do.

1. be a good friend, tell all I know and get him to the clinic
2. Wait a bit to tell him cause he was a shady **** for stealing his buddy's girl even if she was a disease ridden ho
3. wait till she comes over and call her on it personaly infront of him
4. Just shut the **** up and mind my own damn business
5. Some unforseen solution only you asshats could come up with

Either way just another true story from a day in the life of the amish

Uh, tell him, because if he dumps her, after she gave him who knows what from who knows who that what's-his-face got from who knows what, well.. you get the picture.

Your roomy might be a scammer for swooping on this chick, but that doesn't mean he needs to suffer, or worse yet any of his future partners.

And all I'm sayin is that smart people get tested every 6 months regardless. I sure as hell don't want to be the one sayin "She didn't look like she had the herp/aids/peniledryrot/etc...".
About 25% of adult population is infected and 80% of the infected are unaware. (http://www.health-science-report.com/herpes/genital-herpes/genital-herpes-statistics.html) ... and that's just the herp.

I've never been a fan of the double standard either. It's not whether they've been around - it's how they've been around. Is it a self-esteem thing? Or an "I f8cking love sex" thing? The former is trouble, the later is  I'm sure we can agree on that. :p

The only reason that your friend 'knows' about this girl's past sex-life is because someone tipped him off. Every time you sleep with someone you take the same risks as your friend or the girl he slept with. She's smart, if you think you're at any less risk than her then you're not.

Well, since you didn't answer me, I will address this as I see fit. You may feel free to answer me at any later time and I will address as appropriate.

Fluff is making a statement that everyone here seems to find it funny that people are calling this woman a whore, and he's drawing a parallel to racist humor. I see where he's coming from. Prejudice is the same, whether it is targeted at women or minorities, or anyone else for that matter.

So, dan-o, if you wish to discuss the merits of Fluff's comparison, be my guest. If you want to debate me, get a pair and actually bring some substance to the table, instead of feeble, drive-by insults. The fact that you seem to think that Fluff is saying, "Just because it's funny, it aint right," leads me to believe that you don't have the understanding of the argument needed in order to bring any substance to this particular conversation.

I don't recalling anyone calling a whore a whore up to this point, that would simply be an accurate description of someone's profession. What has been in evidence is dual standards and prejudice regarding the sexuality of a woman compared to a man.

That was my assumption, but I didn't want to start writing out a whole argument when I may have actually missed something...

I'm okay with racIAL humor... tends to be more cultural than racial anyway. I'm not okay with racIST humor. Culture = behavior, race = innate physical feature. Behavior, for the most part, is something we choose and have control over.

I'm also not okay with sexIST humor for the same reason, humor that for whatever reason defines women as innately inferior. I am okay with sexUAL humor that makes fun of the differences in behavior between men and women. In this case, we're not even talking about the difference between men and women, we're discussing the chosen behavior of a single person. I would just as much make fun of a promiscuous guy about his unit wearing-out/melting/rotting/falling-off.

Tangent, but an interesting grey area is overweight people... since it's not really clear whether it is an innate physical feature or a behavior issue. Inasmuch as it's behavior driven, I'm happy to make fun it. Example: it is funny to make fun of the 400 dude shoving 6 big macs, 3 large fries down his throat, and washing it down with a diet coke.

I'm okay with racIAL humor... tends to be more cultural than racial anyway. I'm not okay with racIST humor. Culture = behavior, race = innate physical feature. Behavior, for the most part, is something we choose and have control over.

 so, are rac"ial" slurs ok, but rac"ist" slurs over the line?

What seperates a slur from a joke? I guess only those who find it funny.

Back to hotdogs and hallways are we? ;)

I'm with ya Fluff. But on a board predominantly filled with competitive males yutes, pointing out sexism is near futile. Using n!gger will start a sh!tstorm, but use b!tch [the sexist equivalent] and no one bats an eye.

Hmmm ... futile discussion is what the PD Forum is all about though, eh?

A slur by definition is racist. Depending on context, some are worse than others and if it's not the focus of the joke, I tolerate them. If the slur IS the joke, I don't find it very funny.

And Buddha, while b!tch is not the most savory word, it is NOT the same as n!gger.

No. Slur, by definition means

To talk about disparagingly or insultingly.

Its the term "racial" which makes it apply to race.

Its odd to me that you say "racial" tends to be more cultural. And I would find that jokes about someone features, which there is no denying, would not be asinsulting.
As compared to stereotypes about ones culture and people's behavior. For instance, if I say "Black people have dark skin" ..well, that is just true. If I say, "Black people are all criminals" well...

My own definition of the difference between racial and racist. I wouldn't expect that's universal... I'm saying a racial slur by definition is racist because you're talking disparagingly specifically about someone's race. But you can have racial humor that isn't racist.

If you say that your ascribing an innate feature to people because of the color of their skin. That is, they are criminals because they are black.

That's not what I meant by behavior or a cultural feature. Chris Rock's "black vs. niggers" routine for example, pushed the limits and was racially focused, but was about behavior not skin color. Admittedly, it would have been awfully hard for a white comedian to pull off, which is why I said there's a lot of context to it.

However, if the punchline of a joke is that your wife is sleeping with a black man, and he's black for no other reason than it makes the joke more "outrageous", that to me is racist and not funny.

Do you think that's racist? If so towards blacks or whites? Why?

A start to what?
Eliminating the whole "race" conversation?

I mean, we are technically one human race, but there are differences in the 'races' around the world. For instance, Kenyans and Eskimos ARE quite different. Eskimos dont often win marathons. Kenyans dont do so well in the cold Im told. This is "diversity" so should we not embrace it?

I was in Palo Alto at a Starbucks near Stanford to meet a friend, and he mentioned we were actually in East Palo Alto, a less "desirable" suburb. I said how could we be in East Palo Alto, there were no black people there.

Is that racist or racial?

I've heard that Afrikaaners have on average 10% African blood so it wasn't unheard of for a dark-skinned baby to be born to white parents during the days of apartheid.

Detailed below are the relevant posts (that comment on either person involved). The girl in question was unaware of her boyfriend’s dangerous sexual habits, had an apparently monogamous relationship with him for 2 years and dumped him when she found out. She is also smart enough to get tested for STDs. In this thread she has been equated to a disease ridden ho, a skank, a 2 penny whore, having been ‘passed around a bit’ and being wide enough to drive a semi in there. She is also apparently hot.

The Amish’s friend by comparison is advised to check his junk before it falls off, in one post.

So here behaviour is no worse than his, yet she gets the slagging.

Fair enough it is The Amish who is doing most of the slagging but you can see why I picked up on the double standard, after all it is still prevalent in our culture to see a man who has many ‘conquests’ as a stud (e.g. Valentino, Errol Flynn) yet a woman with a lot of partners as loose/sluttish.

I was not accusing you of being sexist, I was querying the whole concept, you chose to jump in and tell me to chill. Your subsequent justification is a very fine line.

The relevant statements summary:

post 1 - The Amish
" I know that girl, She broke up with her last boyfriend of 2 yr's because she found out that not only is he bi-sexual, hes a male prostitute and had been having sex with men for money the whole time"
....

Wait a bit to tell him cause he was a shady **** for stealing his buddy's girl even if she was a disease ridden ho

post 10 - H8r
"Hey, I won't tell you where I heard, but that chick is a skank by proxy. Her X was a prostitute. I don't care if you wore 6 condoms at once and boiled her before you f8cked her, we're taking you to the clinic."

post 12 – Jimmydean
"Dude, you should have your junk checked before it falls off..." Should do the trick.

post 25 - The Amish
So I told him and after the initial freakout over the male prostitute thing he was like "Whatever dude, she said she gets tested all the time"

What kind of 2 penny whore needs to get tested all the time?

post 29- The Amish
All Im sayin is do you really want to get with a girl who feels she needs to be tested all the time. ****s prolly wide enough to drive a semi in there

post 32- The Amish
Oh Ive Felt the need to be tested a few times. Who hasent woke up next to someone they didnt remember goin to bed with and been a little scared. Still though, A chic that feels she needs to be tested all the time..........That girls been passed around a bit, best stay away

Wait, so a positive statement cant be racism?
A "positive" statement can be racist. Note the scare quotes, because the statement ceases to be positive when applied in a racist manner.

Look at the example of the Jews. Normally, it would be a positive statement to say that one is good with money. When this "positive" statement is applied to the Jews, however, it carries a racist, negative connotation.

Or, the statement, "All blacks are good at basketball." While being good at something is usually considered a positive statement, this statement carries a negative, racist connotation.

I fully disagree. You CAN compliment an entire race. Why would that be a bad thing?

"Black people are great" would be cool right?
So why not "Black people are great athletes"?
or "Asians sure are hard workers" ... that's bad?

...you've been brainwashed.

Like Fluff said...You asked if a positive statement can be racist, I gave some examples, which doesn't mean that you can't make non-racist positive statements.

"Black people are great athletes" seems like a positive statement, but what if you are the black guy who isn't a great athlete? There are lots of them out there. Or, what about when that engenders some sort of feeling that blacks should be athletes because they can't be intellectuals? If you don't think some people have that view, then you are the brainwashed one.

It's the same with the Asians comment.

The "black people are great athletes" arguement also suggests that black people are great athletes only because they were born black not because they worked their arses off to get where they are.
