Hello FR monkeys...
I am trying to build up a new bike, and I want to go in a little bit different direction gearwise. Maybe I'm just stupid, but I am having quite the time even finding the parts.
What I would like to do is make the bike with a 9 spd rear cog and a double/chainguide up front (Evil DRS seems to be best). The front would have 28/38 rings. I would like to try to use the external bearing BB (Raceface X type, Saint, GigaXpipe, etc).
You would think that this would be no problem, but the only way I can find to do this is to buy a triple (22/32/42) and then buy the chainguide, and *then* buy the rings, disassemble the triple, and put the whole mess on the bike, hoping the chainline isnt FUBAR.
BTW, the bike has a 73mm BB Shell, 50mm chainline and a 135mm rear hub spacing.
Is there another way? I am open to anything at this point.
Thanks in advance for your advice...

You can find the Diablous 2 ring + bash crankset at Pricepoint.com. That's were I bought mine. They are one of the best online retailers.
click here (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/13341-100_RACXB4-3-Parts-56-Cranks/Bolts/Race-Face-Diabolus-X-Type-Crankset-22_32_Bash.htm)
Of course, the rings are 22, 32. I've never seen a 28, 38 set. Seems pretty tall.
The E.13 DRS 4x104, 36 tooth works best with this crankset.
Keep in mind, if you use a 38 ring on your cranks, your chainguide will need a 40T or 42T bashguard, which is pretty big. You'll find yourself hitting lots of stuff, depending on your BB height.
I have a 40T bashguard that I bought on accident, and it's OK, but I wish it was smaller.
ps. The E.13 chainguide is the bomb. It's silent, strong, and it looks good. I've never dropped a chain yet.

I'd say you've got a great choice of chain ring sizes with a 28 & 38. Sorry, I can't really help you with any of the other details. A 38t is perfect for almost anything, and on those steep, extended climbs, a 28 could be perfect. I do not have problems hitting things with my 38, and the added torque and smoothness compared to a 32 is awesome. Good luck!

Thanks for the response BigB...

I had almost decided on that exact crankset and chainguide, but here are my concerns. You pay 260 for the crankset and bashguard, then take the rings and bashguard off and put them in my parts bin. Now comes my custom ring choices (80 bucks), and add the DRS (150), and you have a 490 bottom end to the bike. Capital OUCH... I wish I could just buy the BB and cranks, and additional parts.
Of course, the rings are 22, 32. I've never seen a 28, 38 set. Seems pretty tall. Keep in mind, if you use a 38 ring on your cranks, your chainguide will need a 40T or 42T bashguard, which is pretty big. You'll find yourself hitting lots of stuff, depending on your BB height.
I will have to buy custom rings. Think about it though, with 28/38 up front, I lose a little at each end, have a bashguard and a chainguide, and can still ride up and down stuff. The DRS does come with a 40 tooth Supercharger, so I think its good there. BB Height is 14.5 which should be no problem. DMR Rings (http://www.dmrbikes.com/?Section=products&pageType=item&category=3&CategoryName=Chain%20Devices&itemid=CRSHR3840)
They also make a multi ring chainguide that attaches to the seattube, which is a neat feature. DMR Chainguide (http://www.dmrbikes.com/?Section=products&pageType=item&category=3&CategoryName=Chain%20Devices&itemid=CDDCR2)
I am trying to build up one of these (http://www.canfieldbrothers.com/Balance%20Page.html)
Now if I could just buy those RF cranks and BB...
Edit: I searched, and didnt even see these, this (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/13968-100_RACEB5-3-Parts-56-Cranks/Bolts/Race-Face-Evolve-DH-X-Type-Crankset-22_32_Bash.htm) is what to buy... 390 bucks even with custom rings and the DRS.
Thanks for your response, and keep the ideas coming!
Peace,
Marc
