I have a medium, and after riding a bunch of smalls, wish I had a small. The small is much better at jumping and cornering. It'll be more the bike you want, plus it's lighter. I'm 5'9" riding a 35 or 40mm stem on a medium, and the TT is definitely a little on the long side. Go for the small if you want a nimble, quick bike that will make you smile every time you ride!

There is no medium for the SX. There are two sizes, Short and Long.

I don't know what size would be best for you considering you stll could grow some more. I am 6 ft and have 2 friends the same height and all of us are riding the Long size. Two 70mm stems and one with a 50mm. The Long with a 70mm feels just right for trail riding, I might try a 50mm if I raced.
I can tell you it should work fine a dual purpose trail and race bike if you pick your parts right. I spent some time on a friend's who has set his up heavy for trail riding and even built the way it is it worked well on the trail. His SX has to way real close to 40 lbs.
Build it right and it should be competitve on the track. Here is mine with no extreme weight cutting taking place and it weighes approximately 31 lbs.

Here's mine. Your guess of 31lbs is too light for that bike. Mine is just over 32.5lbs with a Talas, a Gamut guide, a cut Thomson post, a lighter seat,1.9" Nevegal tires, the same back wheel, and a tiny, light front wheel. At 5'9" the bike fits fine, but a smaller one would definitely handle the slalom course better. I notice the extra wheelbase in the tight, important corners at the beginning of most races. If I ever wanted to race slalom again I'd sell the "long" SX and get a smaller SX. Rad bike for what it is intended for.

The "approximately 31 lbs" figure is from digital bathroom scale so it can be off a bit. Notice the word "approximately".
However the wheelset is fairly lightweight, DT Comp spokes and Hope Bulb hubs. Tires are 2.1 Tubeless Nevegals. Seat is fairly light Ti-rails Flite. Carbon Easton bars with Thomson stem. XTR drivetrain shifters and derailleurs. Ultegra cassette. Hope brakes. All feirly light weight parts.
Another friend had a Long SX and his weighed 32.5 lbs. on a certified scale with a heavier build than mine. My SX has a lighter build then his, I would say 31.5-31.75 lbs would be pretty accurate for my bike.

Yeap. Do you know Pork Chop? I bought the frame from him. I had all of the other parts except the front derailluer and King headset.

No, I don't. Cool.
Now with the Santos park open and the possibility of going back to school in Gainesville, a short travel frame may be a good sibling for my singlespeed.

You want a longer bike for trails. If you are still growing, I would go with the larger size bike or you will be needing a new frame all too soon.
