Usually when the bolts and dust cap come out, the cranks should slide right off. If the splines were not greased, it might be a bit harder. Go the safe route and take it to your LBS, they should yank em' right off.

Yep, occassionally we have to use "other tools" at the bike shop when someone has brought in a crank with rounded threads or whatever.

You need some wedge-punches and a heavy steel/iron mallet. Now, you insert these punches in between the BB cup and the crank, and just pound them in there. Eventually it will work it's way off. A good solid hit to the crank horizontally every once and a while will help.

I don't know what kind of cranks you have been working on but I have never had an isis crank that didn't come off without using a crank puller.

And like Jm_ said a punch and mallet will work well. But would suggest buying a crank puller. They come in handy And it is good to have your own tools.

sometimes you can pull the bolts off then ride the bike around the block a couple times, LIGHTLY NO JUMPING! just to losen em up then give em a good yank.

but the best way is a crank puller....

Jesus, you have to be kidding. There are 3 ways to get it off.

1) A crank puller
2) Self extracting bolts
3) Trying to hit it off

1 is your best option because you don't have 2. 3 is ghetto and you should just get a tool or borrow one from a friend or LBS, just MAKE SURE IT'S A SPLINED PULLER.

Please don't do that. He was talking about doing that only if he HAD to do it. It's only gonna harm to everything around it(gouges in crank, BB, and whatever else you may accidentally hit). Just buy the friggin tool.

Why risk a bodge job with bodgey tools when you can spend a small amount and do a better job.

Only husselfelts anyway.

i dont think you understand what a spline is. those little ridges one the spindle that the crank fits on is called a spline.

I believe the correct technical term for this situation is wallar'. As used in a sentance: "Sir, your cranks seemed to have loosened up while you were riding and now your crank is all done wallared out."
