I would say keep the drivetrain as clean as you can, and use a good lube like T9. If you want to wash your bike, do not turn a hose on it, as that can get water in the shift housing. And also clean your disc brake rotors with rubbing alcohol every 2 rides or so. Keeping things clean in general makes stuff last alot longer, and operate smoother.

There are many many books on the subject (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=br_ss_hs/103-5133025-2994253?platform=gurupa&url=index%3Dblended&field-keywords=bicycle+maintenance)

I would hit your library or LBS up and check out what they have.

Cleaning your bike is the first step. You notice the little things that way. I like to oil my chain with tri flow, wipe down, then reoil the chain and rewipe. The oil on the outside of the chain collects dirt.
