My friend just bought herself a new road bike and was asking me what things she needs to carry with her when she rides. My advice was: spare tube, tire lever and a multi-tool, frame pump or c02. I just started road riding this year (after MTBing for awhile) and thats what I typically carry with me. Is there anything I'm missing?

I carry all the same stuff as you plus a patch kit and a chain tool. I also carry a few bucks in case I need to use a pay phone or need to stop for food/drink.

in addition to food, drink, tools, money... I like riding far and not necessarily near aid, so I also carry extra contact lenses, solution, meds (eg. ibuprofen), extra sunscreen. When weather is questionable -- chemical hand warmers, extra layers. And I'm never without my trusty condom.

There should be a few single dollar bills too. They're not for munchies, altho they'll work for that. But if you ever slice your tire open, you can use the dollar bills to boot your tire (old mtb trick). You may need to fold it a couple of times...

oh right, on longer trips, my tools will contain duct tape which also does the trick Paul mentioned for tires. And zip ties when parts start falling off :D

Always bring a frame pump, even if you have CO2. Also, pick up a schrader -> presta adapter (they're virtually free, and tiny), so you can fill up using a gas-station's compressor if necessary.
I carry, in my medium-size under-seat bag:
3 tubes, 2 levers, patch kit, multi-tool, chain-tool, wallet, keys, cell-phone, valve adapter, and tire boot.
Don't laugh about the 3 tubes (most people do). I've had rides where I used all 3 spares. I don't like to spend time with the patch kit unless it's really necessary. I don't use CO2 anymore; it takes all of about 60 seconds to hit ~100psi with my frame pump.

Yeah, I've been there too on the three flats. 700X23 tubes are small enough it's no problem to carry 3 of them. What brand of pump do have that gives that performance? Mine sucks!

The flip side is many roadies don't carry multi-tools or even chaintools. This seems like a good way to jinx myself, but roadies don't put the same stress on their bikes as mtn bikes.
Sometimes, there are the creditcard and cellphone riders...

I carry 3 tubes and 4 12 gm co2 cartridges. Duct tape, sram quick link, multi tool, duct tape, and an inflator.

When streetriding - Just my cellphone and $20. Cellphone to call for extraction and $20 for whatever, normally a bit of food and drink.

Does your magnum XL rubber double as a rain poncho? ;)

...and if the rubber itself doesn't stop you from getting wet, the spermacide will let the water bead up and roll off like Rain-X :D
