View Full Version : Post Katrina Observations from a Resident of MS
Pretty much sums it up....
FROM A McCOMB, MISSISSIPPI RESIDENT
Via email
WHAT I HAVE SEEN SINCE KATRINA:
The poor and the wealthy hurt by the storm.
Black, white, Hispanic, Oriental and Indian all hurt by the storm.
Christian people giving, giving, giving.
Churches going all out to minister in Jesus' name.
Neighbors going door to door helping one another.
Thugs and hoodlums going door to door looking for someone vulnerable.
Ice and water being fought over as police tried to keep the peace.
People coming up from New Orleans taking over empty houses because shelters are full.
Out of town volunteers coming with food and staying for now a week still serving it.
The Churches all over this part of the country doing what Christians do in a crisis.
The Red Cross doing a great job in the shelters.
The Salvation Army doing a great job in the community.
Four Hundred crewman from everywhere bringing back the power to our homes, churches and businesses.
Lines at service stations a block to a mile long.
National Guardsman patrolling the streets of Mc Comb along with Kentucky policemen protecting us from the hoodlums and thugs of Mc Comb, Pike County and New Orleans (the most dangerous city in the world before Katrina.)
Drug dealers working outside shelters.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel working tirelessly, even sleeping in the hospital to do the job God called them to do.
WHAT I HAVE NOT SEEN SINCE KATRINA:
The ACLU setting up a feeding line.
People for the American Way helping in the shelters.
The NAACP doing any work whatsoever.
The American Atheist organization serving meals in the shelters.
Jesse Jackson directing traffic at the gas stations.
I could go on but you get my message. Its the Christian people with love and compassion who do the work.
The gripers in Congress should come on down and get in line to pass the water and the ice. Are you listening Hillary, Chuck, Teddy and all the sorry loafers we call Senators and Congressmen? They don't have a clue as to what this life is all about here on the Gulf Coast.
Boy do I feel better now.

Where was Jesus, only sent his croanies, too good to show up himself?
Where was the NRA?
Where was the UAW?
Can go on and on with where was ____. The fact is certain organizations are set up to do this kind of releif work. It doesn't make much sense for legal defense groups to attempt such things, I am sure members from such groups donated time and money just like the technology company I work for did through other organizations such as the Red Cross. Churches have always worked to help out the communities and certainly helps that they have an "office" in every town.
I don't get the bitterness from some people about the ACLU, they have done just as much work to defend the rights of religious organizations as they have to protect separation of church and state.

That doesn't mean that athiests aren't helping, caring, or feeling compassion. I don't see the pope down there but that doesn't mean that catholics aren't helping.

They want to let faggot child molestors run the boyscouts! Plus, Bill O'Reilly hates them. And if a man who wants to moralize (and sexually harass his employees with a loofah) doesn't like the ACLU, then I don't either!
(I don't know where these faggot child molestor scout leaders are supposed to come from though. Maybe they are going to raid the priesthood of some of their shining example of pederasty?)
Why doesn't NAMBLA send Michael Jackson? Surely there are orphans down there that need help.

Like I said before it is a legal defense group. I am sure members donated their time and money to other releif groups such as the Red Cross. It doesn't make sense for a bunch of freaking lawyers to attempt large scale releif efforts when their are other people out who are specialists in such thing.

Who are you talking to?
I don't think anyone here was blasting the church and their work, just tearing apart a fake email that completely ignored facts motivated by purely political reasons. Your observation clearly explains why from a casual observation so much releif effort was done by churches, it is an integral part of the region. I think it is great when you actually try to think and generate original thoughts, you just may want to try and have them make more sense.

While some of it is justified (see Pat Robertson) it does get a bit old, althought I have built up quite a tolerance to it thanks to the PD forum.
I chalk it up to general ignorance of what Christianity is really all about and a few very visible individuals who totally skew the perception.

I'll admit it does get bad here, and I feel bad about it too but only because there are not any hardcore prostheletisers(sp?) that post here. At least from my experiences my church bashing comes from a lifetime of having people from the church try and cram their ideas down my throat. From getting cornered by people at work, door to door preaching and when I was a kid getting invited by friends families to go water skiing or similar activities that actually turned into locked door day long soul saving sessions. Legally I can choose to believe whatever I want but in certain areas society does not seem to allow this. I have had neighbors tell me I am going to hell when I politely turned down their invitations to go to church. The original post in this thread basically insinuates that non-Christians are bad people. Personally I am sick of it and have no problems bashing organizations that bash my beliefs.

I have no problems with the 99% of them that leave me alone. I wouldn't harbour and ill feeling for the organizations as a whole if they didn't encourage the actions of the 1% that drive me nuts, not to mention forcing their hands in the political world. How many people have been elected on single issues such as abortion that never have had any actual affect on such issues, answer: a whole bunch.

It’s sad to hear tales like that. Deception and high pressure sales is not what the Gospel is all about. I absolutely hate presentations of the Gospel where the word “vacuum” can be substituted for “Jesus” and it fundamentally not change the presentation.
Please know these are not accurate representations of what the whole Jesus deal is all about.
I have had neighbors tell me I am going to hell when I politely turned down their invitations to go to church.
Interestingly Jesus never presents the Gospel in this kind of language – He never says “you don’t want to go to Hell do you?” – He always frames it as the best way to live, as a way of life, not as an alternative to being “extra crispy”.
The sad thing is most Christians (at least evangelical ones and especially fundamentalists) either choose to ignore this fact or are ignorant of it. Which flies in the face of additional Scripture which say “test everything hold on to the good” instead of just swallowing uncritically what the pastor spouts on a Sunday morning.
A question for you would be: once you declined their offer did your neighbors treat you different?
Legally I can choose to believe whatever I want but in certain areas society does not seem to allow this.
You sure can. Jesus when asked by the rich young dude how one inherits eternal life answers in a way the rich young dude doesn’t want to hear and walks off – Jesus didn’t chase him, Jesus didn’t send a visitation team after him, Jesus didn’t say “Hey you know if you don’t follow me you’re going to Hell” – Jesus let this guy make his own decision.
The original post in this thread basically insinuates that non-Christians are bad people.
The funny thing is, that the Paul says in Romans 2 that even those who don’t know God sometimes do what is required by the Torah – so the idea that non-Christians are “bad” is not totally Biblically accurate. Once again we have a “wonderful” case of as I like to call it “cut and paste” theology…………
