Mark Weir went on to break his own record on the downieville course-with a crash. For that he won $5000! So awesome.

Imagine that, some small website that teaches bicycle skills and santa cruz pitched in for a big purse!

Weir, he never ceases to amaze me with his ownership of downieville!

Yeah, he was pretty impressive. He smoked through my station on the course. Unfortunately, Henry O'Donnell got a flat about 4 miles down the course, ending his day. Well there is always next year.

You lucky bastard!

I think next year will have more coin and more pros there.

Gotta love the classics!

It's nice to see a race that gives professionals prize money. That's too bad Henry got a flat tire. It would have been a good race between the two; it's hard to say who would have won...there's always next year.

Weir is the man, beast and a half. The BikeSkills is great, they're doing alot to try and help MTBing besides putting up some cash. :thumb: to all the guys involved with the race and the cash.

There was also an XC race which the top pros competed in. They called it the All-Mountain Class, where you had to use the same bike for both days!!!

The XC race climbed 4500' to start, then swings over to a very difficult Gold Valley Road/Pauley Creek section before hooking back up for the DH course. I rode it for the first time last week, and it is hard to imagine XC riders making it through it.

Also Marla Streb was there. She won the DH race, but was beaten by Abby from Maverick Bikes in the All-Mountain. Congrats to her as well!

Yeah, I did it about a decade ago and was in the 50's....Weir said once "at night, I have dreams of hitting every line perfect"
Every line??? there are more lines to remember than the script to ghandi...he is a madman.

I did the DH race for the first time this year, been riding up there for years but decided to race it this time. I was on pace for around 45 - 50 minutes or so but got a flat on first divide, on the second-to-last downhill section. A front flat. A puncture from what looked like a three-inch thorn, right through my blue groove. I was so pissed...but anyway it was a great weekend. And Weir's time is truly freakish. I mean like unfathomable freakish, it really doesn't make any sense.

Then Chris Duncan showed up and owned the river jump comp. Double flip, flip 360, 360 tailwhip, etc. Looked like he could have landed most of his jumps too, pretty rad stuff. Second place when to some dude named Craig that did HUGE launches to mid-air ejections/front flips - crazy. Then there was the chick that did the "Janet Jackson" jump where she flashed a tittie in mid-air...

I'm pretty sure I started right behind you. Were you in a black full face, starting near the back of the expert start times?

I finished in 50 minutes, after my rear brake blew out in the 1st mile.

I was #137. Yes with a full face but it was blue, very hungover and didn't get to registration in time to get my plate. On a black heckler, suffering on the flat and climbing sections. Are you the guy that almost caught me on Butcher then disappeared? I had a bunch of sketchy moments at the top, even came off the bike once, hadn't been on the course since last year and forgot about all those loose turns...

Nope, wasn't you I guess. I was #75, the guy in front of me was darth vader(black troy lee head to toe, but no pads), might have been riding a big hit or something, I caught him on the long fire road traverse, he was either completely bonked or had a mechanical cuz he was barely moving. When he crossed the finish line he had a front flat.

Fun race, TOO DAMN HOT IN TOWN!

You're right, that wasn't me. And yeah the heat was brutal. I sat in the river for like two hours after my race, under the bridge checking out the river jump comp. At one point I was shivering, I was really happy about that.

Race down Porcupine rim, that would be stellar, start from the shuttle point or at the over look.

For the DH race, we had 200 riders, a full allottment. For the XC race, we had 600 riders.

Downieville is really more than just DH, over like 15 miles or something there is a lot of flat and rolling stuff as well as a climb that is short by xc standards but epic if you are on a DH rig. But there are also lots of rocks (some very sharp) and some super fast DH sections. You see everything from full on DH bikes to hardtails. It's a real test of endurance, skills, and equipment selection. Plus it's at pretty high elevation so unless your acclimated it's a real lung-burner. I rode my heckler with a 6" fork and DH tires, it worked out pretty well - was wishing for a little more bike on the fast and rough stuff, and a little less on the pedally stuff so that's about right. The puncture flat I got was just bad luck.

There is no doubt that "Enduro" bikes are the bikes to use for Downieville: 6 inch air spring fork/6-7 inch air spring shock. That is what the Men's and Women's winners used.

Flat tires is what you have to guard against. Plenty of sharp rocks and at high speed no less. But enjoy pedalling that 2.7 wire bead up the hill.

Amen. What angered me was that with my 200 lbs I decided to err on the side of heavy tires and I STILL got a flat. Not a pinch like most people, a friggin' puncture!! :mumble:
