Well my vacation starts in a little over 72 hrs. I will be going to all parts of B.C Canada. Well because it's a "family" vacation I have agreed to not bring my bikes :mumble: How can one be so close to all that sweet riding and not ride. I don't think it's physically possible. I'll be gone for 3 weeks and for about 4 days I will be within 2 hours of Whistler!...some times life is just cruel
anyway just ranting...for all of you who get to ride the next 3 weeks...count yourselves lucky!!....D

Dude, you have to work on that-not bringing your bike to the center of the MTB universe???
You need to strike a deal to get one bike added into the luggage!

Allright Donnie, I know things change when you are married with child but that is not right. Throw the bike in the mail, send it to the relatives and ride the damn thing. Three weeks and four days! I should think with you E-bay entreprenuer skills you should be able to negotiate at least 2 days out 3 1/2 weeks. I mean you married a Canadien not a German!

You telling us that you would rather not ride because your not on your own dialed machine versus riding something thats "okay" ?
If so then its more about the bike and not the experience which is lame-o
I know it would kill me from the inside out to be that close and not ride at all.

All that other stuff will be fun, but you, like the rest of us love to ride your bike...there is no point in going to mecca without your bike man.
Put your foot down, be a man-stop the insanity.
My balls would get cut off if bikes were NOT packed for whistler.
Then how is this a vacation?

Seriously. Won't it be a much easier sell if you don't have to deal with bringing your own bike? There are some pretty sweet rentals up there.
One or two days out of three weeks doesn't seem like a lot to ask. I mean jeez, your passion for bikes must be part of what your wife likes about you - at least you're passionate about something. Plus there's plenty of stuff for your wife to do up there. Might end up costing you a mint, but worth every penny.

You have to bring a bike ! It is a family vacation, right? and you are part of the family too, right? So why should your wife not let you bring a bike - she should enjoy and feel nice about herself letting you have a day or two doing what you want. I think that must be fair to ask.

it has nothing to do with being an elitist....rentals bikes are generally abused and not well maintined in my experiance...I have to many things goin on right now to risk injury form a rental...wendy has stopped working so my income is the only one....and we're about to buy a house on Pender Island so I need to be 100%....I can't risk it right now....what if the bike I get has some small crack and decides to fail on me right in the middle of a high speed run...not a risk I'm willing to take.
I know exactly what my bikes have been through and I maintain them almost to obsession...but all you have to do is end up in the hospital for a week due to imporper bike maintainence and you will see my POV...D

That is a pretty weak argument. There are TOO many variables in MTB, especially Downhilling/Freeriding. What if you were riding your own bike and you slipped a pedal, landed wrong [insert 13312135214 other possibilities].
Rent a bike and take it easy, you do not need to go balls to the wall, which from your own account you shouldnt be doing on ANY bike at the moment.

I went to Maine about 2 weeks ago and the place we stayed at was about 45 minutes from Attitash. I asked my wife a few times before we left if I could bring my DH bike since I don't get to do much lift accessed riding living in FL. No was the answer, it was going to be a "family vacation with no bikes". Anyways we got in the car the morning we left for Maine and my wife says she was suprised my bike wasn't coming with us and she was sure I was going to bring it anyways.
My point is I will riding Whistler for a week exactly 2 weeks from today  and if I really Wanted to bring my bike on my Maine trip I am sure I could have convinced her it with some kind of comprimise. Do what I usually do, keep asking her until she agrees or gets pissed off and tells you to "do whatever you want". Last time she answered me without thinking, I had ordered a new frame and some parts before she realized what she said. :sneaky:

I just went to a DH race last week at a killer XC trail system....to only have to go right back again this week to stay with her family who rented a cabin for a week there. I've spent 10+ hours of driving in 2 weeks and gotten in 1 day of DH riding, no XC...and 2 afternoons of riding the sweetest XC trails in Fontana, NC at a snails pace while looking back over my shoulder saying..."You OK back there"...and "it's jsut a little further".

In my case I let the Maine thing slide because I had already been to WindRock the month before and my wife jugggled a whole bunch of stuff around and is taking unpaid time off from work so I can go to Whistler. She knew how bad I wanted to go and did what it took to make sure I could go.

At least my wife "allowed" me to bring my bike for a Whistler day trip.
My punishment for moving her from Seattle to Montreal is having to visit her family. They are "her" trips. But she was cool with me lugging my bike and everything just for a single day trip to Whistler. It was better than nothing!
That compromise isn't it?

Dude, I don't know you at all and am just trying to call it like I see it. This thing about not wanting to ride a rental sounds like an excuse for not wanting to confront your wife about it.
The rentals up there are beefy as hell. We'd all prefer our own rigs but given the choice between not riding at all or riding a rental...at Whistler!!!!! I don't agree with some of these guys, I think compromise is part of any relationship, but still. Every time I go up there I see industry dudes riding rentals (from other companies) and this year was no exception. I also see plenty of kids ripping it up on the most hoopty looking rigs you can imagine.
I mean come on, we all love our bikes but ultimately it's about the ride experience.
Are you in the doghouse for something really, really bad? If not I don't get it.

Some of you are misssing the point....it's not a permission issue...it's a family issue. It's her vacation that she planned...and we talked about me bringing bikes and decided it was in both our interests not to bring them. She knows that if i bring my bike there is not day trip deal. I will get a room at Whistler and stay there for at least 4 days. I'm going on a family vacation and the last thing I want is tension. Sure I could bring my bike along anyway but she would not be happy and I would. The goal is to compromise so were both happy.
Looks like I will be able to come back up right towards the end of the season with some buddies and ride there...so it's not so bad. It's just that I have never been so I just impatient. When i think about it I will be living up there in less than a year so then it won't even be an issue....to all you single people it's all about pickling your battles...D

You called it torture, that would equate to tension between me and my girl. It sounds like what you mean is that the last thing you want is for her to be angry, even if it means giving up something important to you. I agree picking battles is key, but this is one battle I would fight.
It's just that it would never happen - my girl would never plan a vacation so close to mecca and not let me worship.
But whatever, sounds like you've made your decision. Nothing personal intended, we've all got to handle our own relationships.

BMXman, when i was in Whislter i hired a brand new demo 8 with fox 40's from evolution bike shop, was only $100Cad a day. Bike was brand new start of this season and i had no problems with it.
If your so close why not just go for a day trip. 1 day is better then none. If she lets you go for a day then go for it.
I came all the way from Australia and only got to ride two days due to timing, whislter was only open on the weekends when i passed through. If i can make the trip for 2 days and hire a bike then you can too.
And i know where your coming from on hire bikes. I would rather ride my own but a bike is a bike.

Just read this thread and can totally understand your situation. I'm married and have little one as well so a "family vacation" should be about spending time with the family. Having said that, can't you get away for just one day and hit whistler. There are few places that offer rental other than the one near the chair (which only rents Kona). You can rent a Demo 8/9 from one of the bike shop up there and I am quite sure that they maintain their bike. If you're going to be in Vancouver this coming weekend, how about if I swing by at your hotel say on sunday and take you up there. I'm just doing a daytrip so you have to go back with me to Vancouver so that way you can't stay over there. Oh yeah, they have extended play this saturday and sunday so you can ride from 10am-8pm.

Bring bikes now and ride for 3 days. The weather has been unbelievable the last 2 weeks so you're in for a treat. Who knows what the weather is going to be like a month or two down the road. After all, it is a temperate rain forrest up here.

wtf...cant you bring one bike? Say you will turn into a fat pig otherwise....
you should definitely try to bring at LEAST one bike,i don't know how you could survive without one.
and you WILL turn into a fat pig if you aren't able to ride. either that or turn into an American. same deal anyways.

I think it's funny that most of the people saying just do it or work it out are single :D
It is amazing isn't it. Before kids I had all the freedom I could ever want, took off when ever, where ever. Life changed with children, I miss the old days, but also love the present. Kids will be older before I know it and my freedom will become available to me again, but then will the body be able to hold up:think:

yeah we're about to start having more kids...so I hope things will work out....but yeah I know I will have to decide more carefully...it's funny how when you have kids you life is no longer your own...now I find myself just trying to live for them....D

I'm 35 and my kid is 13. (from my former marriage) I might have some energy left to enjoy my free time with my new bride after the kid is moved away in the not-to-distant future.
But then again we're talking about having more kids...

I think the key is to have an understanding spouse. I'm lucky that my wife lets me ride 1 day out of the weekend and at least 1 other day after work.
