ok boys... I got one for ya - stripped hanger bolt

Tried to change out my der hanger tonight, but I managed to strip out one of the hanger bolts in the process. Brilliant me decided to use extractor bit things that cut into the screw to find grip and turn the screw out. Well, all that did was dig out the head of the screw.

So now I'm left with this... one stripped screw, and one screw that comes out no prob. My hanger is pretty well bent - to the point where I can't use 3 of my gears. Any suggestions? I tried drilling it out, but my bits won't penetrate the "shaft" of the screw (where the threads are). Do I need a harder tipped bit?

Do you have a Dremel tool? If so, try cutting a slit all the way across the screw head, and use a bigass screwdriver to get it out.

edit: you could probably use a cutting bit for your drill, too, but it'd need to be a small one.

Yes, I do... and that was my first thought (after I stripped it). However, the screws are recessed/flush with the frame - cutting that slit would result in cutting into the frame as well. I'm hesitant to do that unless it's my only option.

edit: you could probably use a cutting bit for your drill, too, but it'd need to be a small one.
Just a standard metal cutting drill bit? Obviously small enough for this type of thing... but just a standard cutting bit from sears or lowes or whatever?

Use a good METAL drill bit and cutting oil. Make a small hole first, and then use an extractor bit.

Go to a good hardwear store and ask.

ok, I got it out. I did the dremmel thing, but I took one of my cutting wheels (1") and cut up rocks for a few minutes to grind it down to next to nothing, making the radius much smaller (maybe 1/3" by the time I was done). I thought that if I got the radius small enough, I could cut into the screw without contacting the frame. Well, I was mostly right... I ended up putting a very small knick in the frame. I'm kinda disappointed with it because I try to take care of my gear, getting dinged on the trail is one thing, and because it's my yeti and I LOVE THIS BIKE. But the bottom line is it's barely noticable... my cable rub is worse than this is, and I know it won't affect strength, so all in all, no big deal.

The easier solution would be drill the head off the bolt, then you wouldn't have a micro-slice in your frame.

Yea, but I didn't have a drill bit that would penetrate the bolt. And since the head of the bolt is recessed into the frame, I doubt I could have cut away enough of it to free the der without knicking the frame at least a little.

Nice job! I had to do the same when I stripped the bolt on a lock on grip. I also had to grind on something to make the cutting wheel small enough to fit. Necessity is the mother of invention!
