The spring is the right size for me, it's just I cannot get through the last 2 inches. My shop put in 7.5 wt oil. I think they may have put too much in. Is there an easy way to remove some oil? How much should I remove at a time? And from both legs, or just compression. Thanks.

If you think it's overfilled best thing to do if drain them completely and refill them from scratch, both legs.

Take the springs out and push the fork down. The oil should be 7.25" from the top. You can use a turkey baster to remove the oil. Just place a mark on the turkey baster and put it in the fork 7.25" and suck all the oil out. Make sense?

Chances are the shop put too much oil in. That happened to a buddy of mine and his 888 only had about 5" of travel.

THE GO-RIDE ARTICLE ROCKS!!!! USE IT!!!!

Measureing cup works pretty good too, Marzocchi has the amount in cc on the website.

Ive never trusted CC measurements because you cant guarantee you've removed all the old oil,so after a couple of services you end up with too much oil in the fork.
A measurement from the top of the stanchion is the only way to make sure the oil level is right every time.

I run my 888 at 185mm(7.25") and its nicely progressive for my 220lbs bulldozer (lack of) style.

It sounds like you want an easy solution, and taking out those springs or draining all the oil is more work than you need to do.
Just unscrew the top caps, and expose the springs.
Then take out about a capful of oil.
I use a clear hose (from a Hayes bleed kit).
Stick in the oil, put your finger over over the hole in the hose and remove.
And you can just play with the oil levels until you get it right.
That turkey baster thingy sounds like a good idea though, I will have to try it.

Even easier is get a big needle syringe you know what I mean. You can find them at medical supply stores and such. Just get everything and a few plastic tips you could cut and stick a small hose on (like the size of a hayes bleed hose). I just stick it in and suck out whatever I think I overfilled to, then just add some from the syringe. Little to no mess plus you can suck oil out without draining both legs. It works like a champ!

The other way I use to use before I got smart with this way was to cut a zip tie up and have it be the length from the top down compressed. So if oil was to be 2.5" from the top down compressed I made it that long and just held it into the forks. When adding oil and it touched I called it good. Was just an easy way to measure from the top (like you're suspose to). I saw pics of tape measures in there and such and it just looked funny to stick a tape measure in there.

Never had a problem with it myself, just have to make sure that you cycle the cartidge.

I could see how this could eventually cause a problem, I use the distance from top method with no problems at all. I have an old spoke cut to the right length and a syringe with plastic tubing over the end. I can add oil and suck out the excess, no problems at all and it's the same height every time.

Fork oil is designed to stick to every thing,so even leaving the fork draining overnight will leave a couple of cc's in there as a coating on everything and trapped above the bushings etc,the top measuring system is the only way to make sure, plus its easier with a syringe or turkey baster to get it right everytime.

has anyone tried 5wt oil in the compression side and 7.5 in the rebound side? Would it make it too soft?

Hehe,true.......too true in fact!

Anyway, back to 888's,Im running 10wt in the rebound side as I have the heavy springs in them,so wanted to slow the rebound without cranking the adjuster in heaps.
5wt in the compression side would be very soft, they dont have a lot of compression damping anyway.

hey percy, how do run yours in 185mm travel setting, i was thinking of getting some for my new frame and that height would be perfect i reckon
