hello,

So I have a 03 Kona Scrap. xtr 8 spd cassette, and currently a 32 tooth up front. When I shift up to the largest cog, actually like the largest 2 cogs, my chain rubs against the back plate on the SRS. When I shift into the smallest 2 cogs my chain rubs against the bash guard. I do plan to purchase a 36 tooth ring soon. My question is, would the 36 tooth ring correct this chainline problem, or would using a 73mm shell instead of a 68mm shell correct this? Or, should I keep the 68mm shell and go with the 118mm spindle? Or, should I just file down the back plate and the bash guard and enjoy life? I am confused.

I'd send digital pics to E13 and ask them...they're truly experts and WILL get back to you quickly. I mean it...they will.

In any case, what size is your bash? I can imagine that if it's bigger than a 36t guard, you might get that rub in the smallest cogs, so a bigger ring/smaller bash might help. That's just a guess, though. Hard to tell without at least some pics.

On your setup, where is the alignment tab (the tab on the plastic bit outboard of the roller) located with respect to the bashguard? That's the important part of making sure it's all set up correctly. Since your problems are occurring on both ends of the cassette, though, I'm a little confused as to the cause, and I'm not sure changing spindle lengths will help...both problems might stem from different causes.

When I had my SRS set up on a Nicolai frame, I had the alignment tab set up properly, and the chain would lightly rub the slider in the largest cog. E13 told me there were 2 options...bend the slider/backplate a tad towards the frame to help relieve the rubbing, or just run it and let it wear itself in. I did both...

as for getting back, they were really quick. as for the chain rub, i have a similar problem too they told me that the chain ring that i am using is too thick and advised me to get an e-13 chain ring or some other ring which name i forgot, or bend the backplate. as for the chain rubbing against the bash guard. i have no idea.
