What is a good vodka available in the States? How does Kettle One stand in the vodka world? Is it any good?

thanks

grey goose is about the best you can get, its really expensive though. im partial to the le citrion (lemon) flavor.

I drank Absolut for years and realized what crap it was when I tasted Grey Goose.

3 to try:

Chopin
Armadale
Cîroc

Gray Goose is hardly "the best you can get" since it is one step (maybe 2)above Absolut and one step below Ketel One. The vodkas I've listed above above are vastly superior in my opinion.

ahhh the goose     It is good, but far from the "Best" Probably the best mainstream Vodka out there. I think it is smoother then Kettle 1

I've tested many a vodka, and while I prefer the goose I have to say that just about all vodkas are made differently so you should try em all. Dubra and popov are good for making jello shots and thats about it, they're kind of rough. I only drink absolut when its on special at the bar or club. stoli is ok but their flavors are the best IMO. kettle one/goose/belvedere are pretty similar, if you like one you will probably like them all. 3 olives is pretty good. there are a few vodkas that are even more expensive but personally I don't think they're worth the cost difference to become my staple vodka. I think grey goose is great for drinking on the rocks or straight, no mixers required.

I keep a bottle of Stoli Raz in the fridge for a chilled shot, or to mix with lemonade. Stoli Raz an lemonade is very good and can lead to: http://www.cripplefight.com/smileys/drunksing.gif

BIG vodka fan here...
Isn't Chopin a potato vodka? Or am I getting it confused with Belvedere? I never really fell in love with the potato stuff, give me grain any day.
Aramdale, that's Jay-Z's stuff right?
Ooh, and Ciroc is the one made from grapes, I've been wanting to try that!
I'm partial to the Grey Goose l'Orange stuff, makes my personal drink, the Vodka/Coke/Lime Juice just about perfect, good stuff. I have 5 empty bottles of it on my counter right now, guess I should probably toss 'em. I like the Stoli stuff too, have you guys tried their new super-high end stuff? I think it's called Elite or Elit or something. I've been on the lookout for that lately.
Or, you could go the other route, get this thing: http://www.graykangaroo.com/home.htm and never buy anything but super-cheap charcoal-filtered stuff ever again! :)
I've been curious to try it out...

It's hard to truely classify Cîroc as a true vodka since it is grape derived, but it is tastey none-the-less.

I've always enjoyed Svedka. It's extremely cheap compared to most vodka, and doesnt taste quite so crappy.

Grey Goose and Belvedere are the only two I will drink without complaint.

Absolute is horrible. Stoli is a little bit better than Absolute, but for mainstreams, Grey Goose and Belvedere are probably the better ones.

Not much of a vodka fan. Used to drink this industrial paint remover in college.

Man, that crap does suck. A friend of mine hates it so much she gets pissed if we drink it. So, naturally, last summer I was getting krunked off of it in Glacier National Park with my SCA crew and I ripped off the label and mailed it to her. Popov will get you f'ed up. Nothing more.

For drinking, I don't have too much money so for midrange, I find Smirnoff and Svedka to be good bets. Not that great for straight but certainly good for mixing. For a straight drink, I like Goose. Not too original, I suppose, but still good.

I tried the Brita pitcher filtering (http://www.ohmygoditburns.com/wordpress/index.php?p=4) method and it worked pretty well. Does it bring Popov up to the level of Grey Goose? Maybe, maybe not. It does improve the flavor a ton. It takes away the bite, bad smell and shudder associated with cheap booze.

I also tried the filter with cheap tequila and while it smoothed that out too, it took away a lot of the flavor.

I usually end up with Smirnoff though. Can't argue when a 750 ml bottle is on sale for $8 at Albertsons.

Goose is yummy as is Luksusowa :) Ive got some of this: http://www.redarmy.com/home.htm that I just had to buy because of the cool bottle, but it pretty much sucks.

Want to get F'ed up without drinking shot after shot after shot, or mixed drink after mixed drink? then bow down to Everclear!! 95% alchohol and 190 proof!!

but be cautious.. may end up with alcho poisoning! :dead:

yeah everclear is some nasty **** as far as how much alchol it has, although i did have some jello shots made with it that weren't half bad
