I think everyone is still sleeping!

From what I got, the course was maybe a minute faster than last year but had a new NASTY section.

All our teams did well - and were well dressed in their new RM jerseys!

It was a fun weekend. A different atmosphere overall at the event. Not as many participants, not as many fun things from the 24 Hours of Adrenalin staff (no corn roast at midnight, no campfire around where they showed movies last year (maybe because it was so friggin hot?), a lack of volunteers (probably because of the lower turnout) and a lack of proper communication tools (walkie talkies or something) at the checkpoints. And a new downhill section of the course was a dangerous for this type of event and unfortunately was proven so, as there were several accidents along this section, including one that was extremely serious.

It was fun as hell to get to hang out with my team mates and so many other monkeys. It was also a great to spend the weekend with my sons. They both had a really good time, and Liam had a blast doing the kids race. I sure wish I had seen it, but I was out on my lap while he raced. Oh well.

It was Hot Hot Hot out there, but my team mates kicked some major ass in the heat. Way to go to Jollytime, IAB, Splat and Dalton Doug (who did 5 laps again this year). I'll have to step up my training big time and keep working on those PT exercises for my left knee so I can try and keep up with my 4 teammates next year.

Once again, we were all amazed by Westy and his ability to put in so many laps in absolutely scorching conditions weather wise. And a special personal thanks to Westy, who with just a few words of encouragement, really helped motivated me to tackle that long climb better and faster than on any of my other laps during the event during our sunrise lap. Thanks Westy!!

Great job by the Ass Balancers and the Jackelopes and also Team Humanity's Only Hope. Great to finally meet you Tigg!!! Thanks to justbill for all of his support and his fine cooking. You rock Bill and it was nice to meet your son too. He's a great kid! Thanks to Spat's wife for being our volunteer and thanks to Crazy Sweeper for coming to the event to volunteer and hang out with us and motivate us a bit. I know he helped keep me going at checkpoint One when I finished the long climb on my third lap. Much appreciated Sweep!

The Humanitarian award and the Ridemonkey Cup went to Crashby, who stopped on his night lap to help a fallen rider. He did more than help, he may very well have saved the guys' life. I wonder how that guy is doing.

All in all another fun weekend at the 24 Hours of Dalton.

The race should have been renamed "24 Hours of Heat and Cramping." :help:

The course was real similar to last year, with the exception of some of the downhill getting rerouted. The new section was indeed sketchy. The course was faster than last year, but not by much. Saturday had to be 95-97 degrees. It was still an awesome weekend. I got to meet some new cool monkeys (Crashby, McGRP01, NickTheBrit, Goddy43, Sorge) and see all the old fellow monkeys. :)

As far as my own experience goes, my goals were to shave five minutes off my average from last year and have one lap under an hour. My best lap was 1:08, but I did shave eight minutes off my average (average 1:10). NOT TOO SHABBY! I had some major cramping issues on my second lap. I actually fell off the bike and could not stand because of the cramping in my thighs. :help: So after the lap I went to first aid and they gave me potato chips. :D

Anyway, Four Monkeys and a Baboon finished 7 out of 16 in our category. Doug was once again our MVP, doing an extra lap even though he was dead tired. We probably could have moved up a spot in the standings but no one wanted to do one more lap (except Doug, of course). We would have had to throw down a 1:05 lap for it to count and none of us were up to the challenge.

Crashby gets the good samaritan award for spending 90 minutes mid-lap with a fallen rider. The poor guy was in really bad shape. I hear he was all bloodied up, had blood in his lungs, and was in and out of consciousness. Huge :thumb: to Crashby for staying by the guy's side.

Enough of my babbling. Pics to follow...

MMcG, you said it all. It was great to see all the monkeys and be able to spend some good times with everyone. The heat was a killer, but overall the teams rode faster than last year and everyone seemed to have a really good time.

As for Crashby, You make me proud and lucky to be a friend of yours.

How could I forget....

Huge congrats to all the other monkey riders!! Everyone did great despite the heat! McGRP01 and his team pushed through the nasty conditions in their first 24 race. The Jackalopes were all fast as heck as usual. Treesaw managed to keep her heart rate in check and always came back with a smile on her face. Greasey monkey threw down some sub-50 minute laps. Very impressive! And of course, Westy continues to be the resident bad ass here, finishing the race solo despite knee issues and uncooperative legs. Good job, Westy!

What a Weekend ! Lots of fun! What Can be said of Bills Cooking other than MMMM
MMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMM !! How many other had Grilled Red Snapper Stuffed with Hot Peppers , or Grilled Plantes with Ice cream and Cinnamon Sugar !

Not enough can be said for the Heroics of Crasby :thumb: And I thought it was a Great Gesture of the organizers to Recognize Crashby during the awards Ceremony. I know I was in the transition area waiting for MMcG with Squirrel , who was waiting for crashby when news of the crash came down and all hell broke loose. And Earl was very very worried . But we both sort of knew crashby was helping !

And of course a thanks to My wife for being out volunteer.

Now as for the race. For some dumb reason I volunteered to be rider #1 and Run. I hate running. But I did it . and I felt better , except for on lap 2 where I had a major cramp at the bottom of the Pipeline climb ( as I think every one did ). Also on my 2nd lap I got to ride with Westy for about 10 minutes, which really gave me inspiration , and actually really helped me on the next couple laps. Even after he past me I was able to keep him in sight for abouyt the next 20 minutes and every time I would loose sight of him I would Up shift and start grinding till I saw him again .

On my final lap when I caught and past Tree saw , I was really tempted to give her the slap on the ass treatment ( isn’t that what you are suppose to do ? ) but when I poassed her it was not a good place to do that and I remember what happened to ghostrider when he did that .

But over all I was very Happy with How thngs turned out !

The event was more low budget this year it seems. And the lack of ability for the checkpoint people to communicate with the main staging area is ridiculous. I still can't believe Doug did that last lap without getting water or gatorade at that checkpoint.

So awesome to ride, race, and hang out with a bunch of people who are totally chill.

Those who met Crashby for the first time this weekend are obviously impressed by his actions when the chips were down. Those of us who have known Crashby for a long time weren't surprised at all. He is one of the nicest and most helpful people on the planet. Word.

Man I hate to sound like an advertizement, but I was popping Endurolytes and putting Elete in my water, and I never cramped. In fact I have not cramped in the 2+ years I've been using those 2 products. And before that I couldn't race more than an hour without cramping.

Bill rocks. I got back from a night lap and had just eaten some Thai noodles, and was trying to figure out what else to munch on before going over to see if Westy needed anything. And Bill comes walking over with a fresh pepperoni pizza. Now of course he could have just used normal pepperoni and thrown it all willy nilly all over the top. But this pizza was a work of art. Huge slices of this delicious pepperoni, placed in a perfect symmetrical pattern around the pie. I swear that made it taste better :D

I don't even know where to start. AMAZING weekend! It was nice to meet some new monkeys and put a face to the name. As always it was a blast to hang out with my fellow Jackalopes. Crashby, you're way to humble. I wasn't sure what to expect coming in to this, but I'm totally hooked. I never got the butterflies that I used to get in the normal xc races where you only get one chance. It was very relaxed, like one big party, just hanging out with friends, then go ride your bike and repeat. This was my first xc ride of the year  so I definitely suffered on the climbs, but the downhill made up for it. I made up a LOT of time there. FUN, FUN, FUN! I give a lot of credit to Stuntmatty for racing a heavy bike with flat pedals, you're an animal. This was his girlfriend's first race and she was great. The conditions were miserable for even the more established riders, but she always came back from her lap with a huge grin. Way to go Alex! :thumb: Greasy Monkey....Damn. I'm glad you were on my team. Super fast. Congratulations to everybody else as well!

So for a quick rundown of the "awards"...

Ridemonkey Cup: This most prestigous of awards should have gone to 4 Monkeys and a Baboon. However, being the great sports that they are, they insisted that the Cup go to Team Jackalope, because of the 1.5 hours lost while Crashby was on course helping an injured rider. The Jackalopes have officially protested this decision, due to the fact that Bab's team probably would have beaten us anyway.

Ridemonkey Fastest Lap: This was expected to be an extremely close contest between greasey monkey, Sq-earl, douglas, and Westy. But greasey monkey went right out and turned a 48 minute lap  which nobody even came close to beating. Then to rub it in, he went out and did a 50 minute lap which nobody beat too. Westy was in the low 50's, and so were Sq-earl and Doug. Actually, Sq-earl and Westy were under 54 minutes on their first lap, which included a solid couple minutes of running. But nobody could touch greasey monkey on this day. We all bow down.

I met some people recently who were already signed up and riding the event. They asked me to take one for their team, and be the volunteer. I ended up working two shifts... 12-4pm at the over/under -- then 4-8am at Checkpoint #1. That was a blast. I didn't realize there was such a big turnout from the sites here, I would have jumped on to catch up with some of you. I'm a long-time lurker, for the most part.

Who was that I worked with at Checkpoint 1? Sorry, I didn't catch you name...

I got a few pics of the landscape and event I'll post up early this week.

I definitely want to race next year. It was nice volunteering just so that I can get an idea of what to expect.

Oh, the Checkpoint #1 / radio thing... Word was that the radios they were using would not reach down to the main area. I guess that wasn't discovered until the race started.

We were running out of fluids up there EARLY in the morning. We scrounged up what we had as 'leftovers' in all of the other buckets, and I was amazed that got us through 8am. We reported that we were out of water/gatorade up there when the next shift arrived. The lead volunteer coordinator was loadin up a few full buckets on the JohnDeere when we left... I'm not sure what happened after that...

I had the whole tent motivated and cheering people on when they came through. But the nurse wanted to sleep so I had to stop. Honestly though, was I annoying or motivating? I KNOW I really helped some people out at checkpoint 1. For the record, onion and I made sure to let the organizers know that they were almost out of water and gatorade at 8am. Not sure where the problem was, actually by 5am we had everything ready to go all they had to do was send somebody up to pick up our jugs.

The bell was LOUD in that tent man, but any cheering really helps motivate us, especially at frikkin 3:00AM when NO ONE is out there cheering. Last year at the over/under, they had it lit all night and there were always one or two people cheering. This year there was no one cheering at night....just you, Sweeper! :D

Flippin sweet. Looks like you all had a blast. Wish I could have been there. Although, I wonder if anybody anywhere has ever done a 24 hour race without some sort of weather related misery? 90+ degress is just too damn hot. Just once I want to do one where I don't freeze, melt, burst into flames, wallow in mud, or wash away in a flood.

Greasey Monkey, you know that you are now required to defend that trophy in Tucson. I'd start working on the approvals from family members now if I were you.

Certainly a nice gesture, but I share in the protest... in our hearts and minds, the cup is to be shared by all the participating monkeys for a weekend never to be forgotten.

Experiences like the ones we had this weekend always put things in perspective. Whats really important in life. I appreciate the kind words about what I was able to do for Tom (the fallen rider) this weekend, but I was just lucky to be the one to help at that place and time. I will never ever forget the feeling of reviving another human being four or five times after they have stopped breathing.

Anyone of you would have done exactly the same.

Last I heard (at the first aid tent yesterday) was that he was in guarded condition and awaiting a neurosurgeon to fly in to operate on a bleeding portion of his brain. Perhaps somehow we will get an update, but in the mean time, our thoughts will be with him.

Thanks everyone for being part of my 1st 24 hour race! :thumb:

Wow...what a weekend! I had an amazing time, and met some amazing people!! Props go out to all the Monkey's that were at Dalton, you all rock!! :thumb:

I'd like to give a special shout-out to Westy! A truly amazing performance man, you were an inspiration out there. Whether it was daytime or the dead of night, you came through the transition area with a smile on your face, and were never to busy to say "hi". You make me want to be a better racer.

Here's a short synopsis of my weekend...

Goddy43 and I arrived at Holiday Farm around 2:30pm on Friday. It wasn't that hard to find...

http://www.ridemonkey.com/mountain-bike-photos/data/500/392924HourParking.jpg

As we drove up the access road looking for our campsite, it was easy to tell when we had arrived thanks to Splat's thoughtful placement of this banner.

http://www.ridemonkey.com/mountain-bike-photos/data/500/3929RMSponsor.jpg

Once we got parked and got things somewhat set-up, it was time to make sure the bikes were gonna work.

In the other direction was Monkey Central with the camps of 4MAAB, the Jackalopes and the Ass Balancers.

As the sun set on Fri., everything was ready to go at Team H.O.H's camp. (Thanks to Elevate Cycles for their support this weekend!)

As Saturday arrived, the rest of our team showed up with smiles on their faces, and ready to RIDE!!! (Suckers!! )

Before long the race was about to start and everyone proceeded to the start/transition area.

After the first lap I was in need of hydration!! Racing in 96 degree heat will do that to ya'...

After Lap #1, things got busy, and I wasn't able to take many pics. I know Goddy43 took a bunch so hopefully he'll get his posted at some point.

In the end Team Humanity's Only Hope finished the way we started...with a smile! :)

I got there a little after 4, onion and i relieve 2 girls and a dude (lucky guy) I got stuck up there with a guy named onion (not just a clever name) :D

I wonder if westy knows who I am now, I don't know him personally but I knew his number when he went through and I would always start yelling and screaming cheering for ridemonkey and him, by name, he had no idea who I was so he kept looking at me funny. That bell was loud, I didn't realize my ears were hurting until that nurse made me stop. I had everybody in the tent going pretty well until the nurse showed up, a lot of people didn't really have the enthusiasm I did at 3am but I peer pressured them into it. It was nice to see those people start smiling, you could tell that the last thing they were expecting that late was somebody cheering for them.

Yeah I was wearing the I'm so freeride shirt that was like 3 sizes too big for me.

LOL!!! I think you 2 relieved my sisters (twins) and their friend. They were pretty miserable because of the bugs and the fact that their shift was supposed to end at midnight and they were there until 3am. ;)

I can't really thank the volunteers enough. It was awesome to have someone that I knew at the checkpoints for every lap that I did. Your cheers and assistance were much needed and quite the motivation to get out there again! THANK YOU!!!!

That's too funny... someone in my travels between my tent and Checkpoint #1 (I was tired and loopy until I realized I had a duty to perform up there when that John Deere disappeared from sight), someone mentioned that they asked (or just "had"?) one checkpoint stay 4 hours later than they were supposed to. For some reason I thought it was #2. There's definitely no need to excuse the miserableness... ;)

The bugs were horrendous. When there wasn't any bikers around to cheer for, all you could hear were the swarms of mosquitos around you. They definitely weren't seasoned mosquitos though... The OFF I had on worked awesome. Or maybe it was that onion thing Crazy-S was talking about. But anyway.

Does anyone knows a girl that was volunteering at Checkpoint #1 between 3:30am - 8am? She would have been wearing a navy blue or back hooded sweatshirt. I passed there around 4am on my lap and a female yelled, "Good job Tigg!!" I thought it was one of our volunteers so I yelled back, "Thanks Beth", only to see Beth volunteering at the timing truck when I finished my lap!?!?

Of course it could just be that all the ladies were recognizing me by the end of the race.

Edit: I guess it could have been a guy with a really high voice??? It was 4am, and I was exhausted!! :dead:

LOL! No need to worry...I picked on them quite a bit about the miserable attitudes they came in with. They said the same thing about the bugs...no amount of spray in the world was getting rid of them. I think they had a good time overall, they were quite tired and grumpy (perhaps because they didn't bring enough beers up with them).

That's too funny... My team told me to bring a backpack up full of beer. Some for me, some for whichever team-member of ours was coming through.

I didn't bring any... (I nearly got wasted off of two late in the day) but I'm up there waiting and waiting. Nothing. Nobody comes by. I get back and from 50 yards away, I see empties sitting on the bumper of their truck... they might as well have raised a while flag on a pole... ;)

Well, what can I say....another amazing weekend of riding with some awesome :monkey: s. It is so wonderful to have such a group of people to meet up with and ride with and have so much fun with. When the race started, it was so much fun to cheer for so many different familiar faces...I think people were beginning to look at me funny at the over-under when I cheered for Sq-Earl, then Westy, then Wiley (local rider/racer and friend), Splat, Stuntmatty and Tigg. It seemed like I knew someone coming through every 3-4 people :D

Team Jackalope: When Sq-Earl ran so fast and came through the over-under 8th on his first lap  I knew it was going to be a long race ;) Echo posted up fast times as expected and rocked the course on a hardtail (not sure how your arse survived some of those techy sections as I was definately using my suspension). Tweek (sure---he says he didn't really train) comes in with fast times and still manages to make sure I stayed hydrated and fed. Then there was me...I was disappointed that my times weren't faster as I had trained and really worked for this race...my lame excuse for slow lap times is the fact that I'm 9-10 weeks pregnant. The biggest challenge for me was trying to keep my heart rate down and trust me...that was tough. Then there was Crashby, who not only turns some smokin' fast lap times on his first 24 hr. race, but reminds everyone who knows and loves him of why he is such a truly wonderful person though his humble humanitarian actions. I was not at all surprised that he would stop to help a fallen rider but am definately proud of him none-the-less.

Team Ass Balancers: Stuntmatty rockin' the flats got faster and faster on every lap he rode. I can only imagine how much fun he was having on the downhill sections. Greasy Monkey got hella fast and managed to smoke just about everyone out there (the fastest male at the race was 3 minutes faster than Bob) and definately gets my vote for most improved lap times. Sorgie comes out on top with his first 24 hour race and proves to be quite the competitor...not that I doubted he would be ;) Instigator humbly says he's not in good shape and that he wasn't as ready to race as last year and yet he manages to turn in some FAST times... Then there was Alex in her first ever mtb race...never without a smile and out there having a blast despite the heat.

4 Monkeys & a Baboon: What can I say...Mr. & Mrs. Splat took more awesome photos (which is great because a lot of the ones my sisters took were blurry :( ) and motivated me to keep pedaling through a tough section of singletrack when he passed me on my night lap; Dalton Doug held his title of fast-mo-fo for five blistering laps and managed to scare the crap out of me when I was coming down the downhill section (near the end of the course) as he was heading through the beginning singletrack...I heard someone start cheering for me and had no idea who it was until later that morning; IAB, despite some cramping, turned in some fast laps and always had a smile on his face; Jollytime got a new bike (thankfully he wasn't going to be passing me on a heavy bullit again this year) and had the pleasure of passing me on my second lap out...atleast I made it farther this year than last year before the inevitable pass ;) MMcG battled through the pain of his recent knee injury to turn some laps for his team...what a trooper :thumb: and his very well-behaved sons were there to cheer him on. Justbill get the chef of the race award again...the smells coming from his cooking were absolutely amazing, and he was always coming by with something to share.

Humanities Only Hope: Making their first ever appearance at Dalton came through with some good times and appeared to be having fun. It was nice to see some more familiar faces around the race course. Hopefully next year they'll return and whoop it up with the rest of us one more time :thumb:

The King Monkey Himself--Westy: I have never had the pleasure of meeting a kinder more inspirational person. 24 hours, 14 laps, 97 degree heat and he always had a smile on his face. It was a pleasure to ride with you and be passed by you...even if you blew by me like I was sitting still ;)

Thank you to all of my teammates and friends who watched out for me, kept reminding me to eat and drink and check my heart rate...I definately couldn't have done it without you. Also, a big thank you goes out to the volunteers as well...my sisters Holly & Heather, their friend Heather, Kelly (Tigg's wife), Beth, Mrs. Splat, Crazy Sweeper, Onion and anyone that I have forgotten...your cheers are what kept us going lap after lap after lap.

As always, it was a great time with some great people and some great riding. I can't wait until next year :thumb:

Well, like Treesaw said, not much I can add to what's been posted since I feel the same way. It was great seeing all you monkeys again, especially since I've been offline for a while. Racing against/with you guys makes the hours seem less painful & stressful.
Missed having ghostrider, Deyv, and Isa, but also had much fun with Sorgie, Alex, and Crashby (I'm proud of ya, bro') there this year.
Hey Greasy -- You know if If you slow down, your BB bearings will last longer?! :D
My only hope for next year is if they make things safer and better-organized. I know I already bitched about the course sketchiness, emergency response, and lack of liquids at the checkpoint, but it's stuff like that that should be a "given" at an Adrenalin event. Which reminds me -- many thanks to our volunteers!
Anyway, hope to be online more soon and see you at Monkeyfest! Cheers to all for a great weekend! :thumb:

Once again what a fun weekend. It was truly a pleasure riding and hanging out with everyone. I wish I had more time to hang out, maybe next time I'll try and get on a team.

My drive up to Dalton was a long one, 40 miles from home I realized I forgot a bag full of food and had to turn around. My 8 hour drive turned into a 10 hour drive. Showing up late I got some great help from Echo, TreeSaw and Squirrel setting up camp. Thanks again guys. Monkeys continued to help me throughout the race, cheering me on feeding me and Jolly Time rode along with me for a while. Echo continued to help me out through the race wiith my bike, especially with a nagging front derailleur problem which prevented me from getting into my granny gear for the first 6 laps.

The Race:
Things went great for the first 5 or 6 laps. I felt good and thought I was pacing myself well. the main problem was it was hot, really freaking hot. Just thinking about ice or a cold stream literally made me drool. I was drinking plenty of stuff but at some point my stomach stopped absorbing anything, I was all bloated and achy. I had to get it working again or I would dehydrate so I just did a few laps never pushing my heart rate, at some point my stomach growled and seemed to empty in just a few minutes. Unfortunately it never felt the same again, the rest of the race was a struggle to eat or drink anything. Eating required cold water to wash the food down and I had to fight gagging and dry heaving, fun stuff. Despite battling a few cramps I felt OK until about 9:00 when my body just seemed to shut down. My legs felt strong and I had plenty of food I was just tired, the kind of body tired you get when you have the flu. I tried to sleep but couldn't. The rest of the race consisted of doing a lap or two followed by failed attempts at sleeping. Sometime in the morning I really imploded. The people camping next to me said I came in after a lap, sat in my chair and my eyes just rolled back in my head for a few minutes. I decided to quit and wandered over to 4:monkey:'s and a Baboon camp. After hanging out with they guys and one of Bill's tasty pancakes I decided to go back out for a couple of laps so I did not DNF. On my second lap I got to ride a long with JollyTime until I couldn't stay with him any more and just crept along the course so I could finish after 11:00.

The thing that really has stuck with me from the race was seeing the abondoned bikes from injured riders. One lap I passed paramedics hauling one guy out who apeared to have broken his jaw. I can't say enough about Crashby helping the one guy out, I really really hope he has a full recovery.

Thanks again for everyones help and encouragement, if it wasn't for you guys I probably would have packed up and left before midnight.

I had fun, thanks for giving me the opportunity to serve. Your gratitude and kind words are my greatest reward.

Did anyone mention how hot it was. The slight breeze was nice but that sun was brutal. I could not conceive a way i could ride or race in such ocnditions.

I have no ride reports to give as my bike never came of the truck rack, and i have no pictures to share.
But i will remember,
the carpenter ants, the thousands of big black egg carting ants living in my trailer when i opened it up there. And the Nightrider tent guy for helping me kill them all.
Bernnie, who i helped at the check in tent because i forgot to check what site i was supposed to be in, and the computer was down so he couldnt tell me. Then he let the ridemonkeys take over a block of 5 sites.
The confort i felt having my son (10) in the company of such fine and honorable folks, and the look on my sons face racing with the kids.
The joy following the fast first laps, the anxiety at 1am waiting for word of the fallen, the love af a mother tending her sick child.

and next year i will remember the keys to the camper, and ketsup and mustard

Haha, I somehow made it in the background of 2 pics (sunglasses, orange hat and black pirates life for me t-shirt).

Saw a ton of RM shirts out there. Remember seeing the guy with the Guiness riding shirt and thought to myself "hell yeah, another shiftless out of shape beer drinking biker out there like me!!" - then he passed me. Curses!

Good times though.

Batch 2 !

Lets change the pace a little bit.
time for 24 Minutes of adreilin , The Kids race. I'm sorry MMcG , But my wife did not take any shots of your boy :(

But here is My daughter Jessica , with her Brother Peter giving race advice , and on the end with # 132 is justNoah

I asked peter what he said , he told her to be careful going into the turns and don't worry about finishing last.

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6403.jpg

Well Like the Main race this field was not nearly as big as it was last year . but they decided to break it down into 2 groups , 4-8 and 9 -14 , so Peter is 8 so he was in the first race

and here is pushing hard .

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6419.jpg

and here is the 9+ at the start JustBill behind Justnoah and Jessica

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6423.jpg

Now back to the main attraction.
here Stuntmatty and I are waiting in the timing tent for an exchange. it was sooo Hot out they let us wait in the transition tent.

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6444.jpg

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6446.jpg

ME :D

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6449.jpg

I tried taking a Bunch of shots with long SHutter exposure to show the Bike moving across teh trails , ( was very cool to watch ) this is the one that came out the best .

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6461.jpg

It was a very nice Night out and Bill sort of just fell asleep here. and this is where he spent the night.

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6463.jpg

apprently while I was out on my Night lap , my Daughter threw up, Twice ! and My wife and Bill cleaned it up , after the 2nd time , my wife threw my 10 year old daughter out of the camper ! and made her sleep out side ! fortunatly the temp was only in the mid 70's so she was fine , she actually liked it .

http://mysite.verizon.net/jgoeller/dalton/IMG_6464.jpg

Daylight comes again , I got about 2 hours of sleep.

but here is Baboon ( who also slept out side on a lounge chair ) tearing it up.

Last year they had the local Dalton guys help w/the course, etc and this year they didnt - not sure why but I hope next year they go back to enlisting their help.

One of my (pre race) thoughts were they needed to throw some (slow) single track into the fast dh section (block the road, make you do a short tight st section, then back out, so instead of coming into the sketchy section at 30mph you'd be doing 5mph)

I really hate saying anything bad about people putting on a race but I do want to say IMO, Adrenaline needs to make a few improvements

Anyway, I did have a blast, but the combination of the heat, my 5th lap and my competitiveness pushed me past my limits

Bill's cooking ruled, my teammates all did a great job, and we worked damn good as a team with our next rider always being at the tent ready to go when the current rider came in.

It was great to see everyone, my one regret is I wish there was I had more time to socialize / goof off / hang out.

Greasymonkey, you are one sickly fast dude, I have been training my ass off and you smoked me, I do wish I saw you out on the course - I would have loved to try to hang on your wheel.

I want to see the results, last year me & sq-earl had the same fast lap time, and this year I think we did again!!

My lap started at 10:38, so we would have needed to get two laps in before 1:00pm, that only gave us 2:22, on a cooler/less humid day it would have been done !!

(I am so glad the decision was made by the time I hit the under to not go for it, so I just needed to finish my lap - which was a chore in itself!)

He gave me some of his water, I told him I'd be ok, and he kept going.
Somehow I got up and was able to get going again - I sorta felt bad when I passed him a few minutes later

The sportsmanship in that event really impresses me. I had the same thing happen to me. On my first night lap, I was literally rolling around on the ground in pain at the beginning of the pipeline due to cramping. Three guys stopped and offered help, but I told them to keep going. One guy offered electrolyte pills so I took them. Then I passed the dude on the pipeline, and he says "Boy I guess the pills work, huh?" :p

the lack of trail time hurt me big time, as did the lack of riding the trails in any type of real heat and humidity. I thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest on my first lap on Saturday. Changing the flat actually helped get my heart rate down a little bit. I'm still totally impressed with how the 4 of you guys did under these conditions. I have awesome teammates! :thumb:

everyone also needs to remember, the riders that have longer lap times were pushing themselves just as hard as anyone else, BUT were out there pushing that hard for 10 -30 minutes longer than the faster guys, and in that heat/humidity that is super impressive in my book!!

Hey, did anyone else find the night laps to be mentally exhausting? Maybe it's just my inexperience with night riding, but you have to concentrate and focus so freakin hard on the trail in front of you (especially on descents), you are mentally drained by the end of the lap. The pedaling itself isn't any harder than day laps, but I found the mental focus to be really draining.

My arms got a lot more tired on my night laps because I was riding like a sausage (barreling into things and then having to get myself out of them without crashing too many times ;) ) I personally like night riding...it's so peaceful and serene, but the new DH section really took a lot out of me.

I am not a fan of night laps - if you look at the lap times, you can see the people who do ride night didnt lose much time compared to their day laps, and people like me did

I think I should have went with a new bar mount light instead of helmet, the lights weight kept pushing the front of my helmet down blocking some of my view, I kept thinking about Westy saying he hooks a rubberband from the back of his helmet to his camel back (or shirt) which would have solved my problem

I loved the night lap! I do so much night riding it is like 2nd nature to me. and because the heat wasn't an issue I felt really good.

as for keeping my Helmet up , I have 2 different solutiuns , sinceit is usually not as hot at night I use a BMX helmet for night/Winter riding, and 2nd ly when I use my XC/vented Helmet A sweat band helps hold it up. But I still had issues by the end of my lap when the Sweat band was so full of sweat that it moved to , right in front of my eyes :help:

My one true night lap (previous one was just before sunset) was OK. I had plenty of time to rest since Crashby was out being a hero. I caught up with Instigator at "The Demoralizer" and then we rode the rest of the lap together. With the extra light, I made it back safely. At that point, it was about riding with friends more than trying to get a hot lap in.

I seem to do alright riding at night when fresh but when turning laps at night when tired it is a real challenge, I seem to have problems getting my bike to track where I want it to.

I found a solution to the problem of the lights pushing my helmet down. I cut a few chunks out of a mouse pad and wedge them under the back of my helmet mount. This basically makes the light point down more and lets me place the light farther back on the helmet where it is in a good balanced position.

My night lap was probably my most fun lap of the race, I was just blasting along, totally focused on the trail. It rocked :thumb:

I didn't know it could get better than your last lap, when treesaw and I found you, you looked like a kid in a candy store, or an old man in a booby bar....

I don't know about this year, but I definitely want to try and race next year. Maybe not race it but at least join a team and put in my laps.

I emailed High Peaks Cyclery yesterday to find out about '05's race. I'll let you all know when they reply.

My 2nd lap was my sweet lap, I held back some then did the 1st 1/2 of the road climb in my middle ring, and just tore threw the DH, pipeline and the last singletrack - I am still shocked they have had that lap as the same time as my 1st one.

Nice! Jim that was on my team in Dalton has done the 24-Hours of ADK. the past 2 years and is doing it again with his old team again this year I believe. I think Goddy43 is in with me for our team, but we may be looking for 3 more.

It looks like that race does not have five person teams, only four person. Any idea what kind of elevation gain the previous races have had?

4 person works for me. I'm not positive about elevation, but Jim did say the course last year was easier than the one at Dalton. Not as much climbing anyway!

Treesaw (and Sq-Earl) Congrats on the little one on the way!

Crashby- You are self-less...bet a lot of people wanted to hug you for that one! Great job!

I haven't been on RM since April, but I thought this race was recently, so I wanted to see how it went. Sounds like you all had fun. I've just been riding a lot of flat land. There is a small area here that has a few tricks I've been venturing on to.

I've also been spending some time in Saranac Lake...looking at a culinary Program at Paul Smith's College, but haven't gotten the nerve up to venture out to White Face yet...seeing as my first (and only) trip there didn't turn out great...I was, by no means ready, but Shrimp and Instigator kept encouraging me to push myself, so I learned a lot those couple of days.

Maybe if I end up moving I'll hook up with some ADK riders and learn more DH stuff and some day be able to ride with the BIG DOGS!

Great job everyone.

I am working on that we will see how it works out.

So who else heard them crank this way up at 4:00am (give or take an hour)
I thought it was a good choice for the solo riders!

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on.
Don't let yourself go, everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes.

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along.
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on.

Everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends.
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand.

If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on.

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes.
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on.
Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. (repeat & fade)
(Everybody hurts. You are not alone.)

Did anyone else see some staggering drunk guys cheering on riders in the dark right before the fire road climb? They slurred some encouraging comments that sounded like they were reading off of some motivational posters to everyone riding by. I got a good chuckle from it and have to admit I was jealous.

Apparently those guys were the "shots for wheelies" guys... If you did a good wheelie through that section, they would hand out shots of Jim Beam... :thumb:
