I like Diamondback for the under $500 range. The quality is the same for Specialized/Trek for the under $500 bikes, probably because the same factory which builds DBack bikes are also building the cheapo SpecEd/Trek bikes.

I like the Response Sport, which has a RST 100mm fork and disc brakes. I think the key is buying it from a decent shop, not some type of ski-mart or department store. While the guys at the Local Bike Shop may give you some funny attitudes for buying a low-priced bike, at least they have the experience and diligence to properly assemble and fit you to your bike.

I totaly agree.

Also look for somthing used. But in good condition.
Though it wont last as long you will have the better riding, lighter, and higher quality bicycle. ;)

Look for a used hardtail.
If you're buying new. Try the redline monocog. It is cheap, and high end, just not flashy.

Well, what kind of riding do you want to do? Do you want to do gravity stuff( dirt jumping, urban riding (jumping stairs and urban stuff), cross country trails, aggressive xc trails.....

I am looking too, and up to $500 and want something that can take jumping off of stairs etc. around the city, but can handle some easier downhill as well.

That's the Hardrock Comp in a nutshell. Strong frame, overbuilt stem, even a Marzocchi (straight from Taiwan). I even saw one at Northstar. And it has a cool flame job:

I bought one last year, and recently traded up to a full suspension XC bike.

You're right - this bike's bulletproof - The shifters are crummy - that's probably your first upgrade.

The rims are great, though - I rode it 4 miles on a flat tire, and not even a little wobble!
