tire wear

i did a search and nothing came up. so as a rule of thumb, how much can a tire wear untill tire performance become significantly less then when it was new? and does anyone wear out the treads on the side before the ones in the middle? all the tires i went throught have the middle treads nearly bald and the side ones with nearly no wear.

When the knobs lose their sharp edges(ie: become more round than square) I change them. And I haven't heard of people wearing out their side knobs faster than middle ones. Sometimes you can rip the side knobs off, but there still isn't as much wear.

i dont really get it when you say round, my high rollers have been worn down pretty bad in the center knobs but they still are sharp. :confused:
