View Full Version : Has anyone actually FreeRided thier Fox 36?

All the guys I see with the Fox 36 are riding flat single track with All-Mountain bikes. Fox claims it to be a Freeride fork, so who's actually Freeriding it?
How big have you gone on it? How does it feel in general to drops?
Is the Fox 36 open bath on the damping side allowing for adjustable progression like a Zoke?
I would consider getting one, but I have not seen a single person actually huck one yet.
Is it just an over bloated fork with super thin walls that will get destroyed by Freeriding? Stiff and light don't mean jack if it can't take a hit to the lowers without puncturing. I've seen pictures of punctured Fox 40s, is the 36 just as bad?

well i dont think itll break if you stay away from drops to flat or if you land smooth.

i would like to see these pictures. and seein how the 36 is basically a smaller version of the 40, i would assume that it could happen to it too.

And you could say the same of the 888 and 66 but the 888 actually had problems with their lowers

Want to back that up with some links?
There was a big ol' thread on MTBR about a broken 40, but nothing to do with "punctures" and happened under such circumstances that it wasn't a normal failure, there was clearly something else involved (user error, mfr. defect, something like that).

Yeah no punctured fork legs. Anyway this was the other MTBR thread. He got it replaced for free I think...

Ahhhh. Ask and you shall receive!!!
Not quite a "puncture" but still pretty damn close!!!
I would be pissed as all hell if I droppped $1500 on a fork and this happened.
Why can't Fox just give an option of a heavier fork? IMO they should make a two versions of the 40, bruiser and race. Give the bruiser a thicker set of lowers and the race remain the same model.
Making a XC or AM fork with thin walls is great! I don't see why they thought it would be a wise idea to make such an awesome DC fork that dents like a tin can.
The Fox 40 MAY look like a burly romp'em stomp'em fork, but it's really only a DH race fork and not intended for Freeriding (like so many people ride it as).
If the Fox 36 is a Freeride fork then it should be able to take hits to the lowers better than the 40 right? I haven't seen any broken 36's, but on the other hand, I haven't seen anyone riding it like it was intended.
Quote from guy who owns fork:
the bike basicly fell over & the leg hit a cement wall, very little impact, I wasn't even on it.

There was another guy on another forum that actually puntures all the way through. I'll post that pic if I can find it.

Point of that other thread is the guy is just blowing up an isolated incident.

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows, this may be a problem for all we know? It's possible more might break down the road, and it's possible not a single one get broken in the same way.
It could be possible that the dude with the Broken 40 arch didn't tighten the crowns enough, or something, thus the fork legs twisting and putting too much force on the arch.
Who knows.
All I gotta say though, is that I would be weary of paying $1500 for a first run production fork. The whole fork is new so there's bound to be some issues with the first batch.
Anyone know anything about the damping system they use in the 36 and 40? Thier web site is TOTAL junk, seriously. Absolutely NO info AT ALL and on top of that they use a really lame text font that's hard to read. I know 15 year olds who could make better/more usefull websites. I've heard it has a position sensitve damping ramp up near bottom out? Thus you get a more linear feel without ever bottoming out as compared to a Zoke where you don't get a linear feel at all if you tune it to prevent bottoming?
If only Marzocchi offered an adjustable (not a preloader like ETA) travel freeride fork! They need to put TST into the Z1 FR fork, it would sell like hot cakes! I've never once seen a zoke get punctured in the lowers or let alone gouged. I've smashed my Bombers into sharp rocks before and nothing more than a little bit of missing paint.

I can honestly say that i SERIOUSLY doubt the fork was dinged from it falling over. My bike has crashed down some gnarly rock gardens all ready this year (minus the rider) and has only a few scratches.

Please go read that entire thread before making any judgements.
Anyone who forms an opinion of the Fox 40 because of one incident of a broken arch is, IMO, an idiot.

I don't know how many lame posts I've read of you complaining that the "huckers" need their own forum...and yet you're posting in it...guess you've just got to front some hate on 'em for all your racer buddies...

a. thats my land, lots of fun stunts we have built for training.
b. its not an isolated occurence. happened to another dood in brazil. Fox still hasnt give then yay or nay as far as replacing it. (They received it thurs morning).
c. the fork never should of broke, the amount of beating it took was pitiful for such a break.
d. the lowers on the 40 blow. looks like someone took pvc and painted it. chips real easy scratches real easy.
