View Full Version : Generosity and the Bounty

So Saturday, we had a guy come in to pick up a used team bike from the shop. The bike had been waiting for him here for almost two months, and we found out that he hadn't been able to pick the bike up because he is in the military and had been stationed overseas.
While he was in the shop and waiting for things to get finalized, he mentioned that he wanted to donate "a couple of bucks" to the Bounty. As Scott was finishing up his receipt, he asked how much exactly the guy wanted to donate.
"I don't know, like $200 I guess."
We were pretty floored.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to Devin Schmidt for putting so much into the sport. Also thanks to everybody else who has donated. We're currently at $2172, so private donations have already topped what we put in to the Bounty. However, we still have a way to go as the season is about to get underway and we're $2828 shy of our $5000 goal to make the $700 payout at each event. If you haven't donated yet, or know anybody who hasn't, just consider this a reminder that waiting until the last minute to make a donation is coming up quickly. No free tote bags on this drive, but $20 will get you a T-shirt. :D

That's awesome!
Come on all of you guys, donate a couple bucks. Almost all of us can afford five bucks without even batting an eyelash, and even something small is more than nothing.

Hey, from the sounds of who is going to Crankworks instead of Brian Head, and since you've ridden there already a few times, you could get your money back. :D

Big thanks goes out to Devin Schmidt. He was overseas fighting for us, and then he came back a gave $200 to help American racers. He's a true hero...we could ALL learn something from him!
My last question is, how many pros have donated?

I think we should get a bunch of people to donate money for the $350 goal and have ridemonkey at the big sponsor and on the checks and stuff that would be sick!

Bounty sticker? Psshh.
No GR.c sticker on your visor there Mr Carter? I'm sorry, no check for you. ;)
Nah, no requirements other than that that you'd race in a US jersey at the World Championships.

Master Worlds for this ummmmmmmmm kid.....................at heart.
That's how it works in other sports with that kind of a payout program. YOU ARE making it happen. Not saying that any pro needs to shop only at go-ride, but if they want YOUR money I think you should require a sticker. So many sponsors for the riders that the bounty is aimed at sure don't give any money and get all kinds of plugs. Is this going to be the bike industry standard forever. He who gives the least money gets the biggest logo because THEY made the bike. Hell if I was an Ad exec at GM back when Chevy Trucks was the sponsor I would have pulled the plug too. Back when Jeep sponsored the NCS every rider wore their logo because there was incentive to do so. Look at Nascar (Nextel Cup). Do you think NORBA would EVER call it the Fox Shox National Mountain Bike Championships... NO. My point is screw EC he gets paid. I thought this was about the riders who eat top ramen just to get to the next race and give his/her personal best. Guys like Van Dine/Johnson, girls like Emily/Gale. That is why I gave to the bounty!!! Guys like me who spend thousands every year just to race. EC, Lopes, Vories,O'donnel all ahve contracts that the go-ride bounty wouldn't put a pimple on the ass of. So what your saying is that the same top five americans STILL get all the money. Wow not what I thought this whole thing was about. The little guys in the pro class. And wear a US jersey a worlds why... did they pay the way!?
This is why it will continue to get worse. We give NORBA everything they want without NORBA giving anything in return. Great idea... glad I bought in.

so are you saying if any pro that will put a big GO RIDE sticker on your visor
gets the bounty. no factory pro would, only the guys who actually need the money.
man, that si the way to do it. a pro privateer fund.

I thought that was the point. I know Lopes eats no ramen. No man could get arms like that on ramen alone. So the big boys can't put a sticker on... big deal. Just a little one on the visor/downtube. You guys are going thru alot of trouble to not want to be all over this. Be the hero of the priviteer... Those guys get money from fox now anyway. Some factory guys will to I'm sure Q,Jeff Evens, and the boy at KHS would. WTB guys would. BCD is no question. Still ALOT of pros that are factory that aren't soooooo "Factory". Personally I vote for on track betting.

Go-Ride eh? Bounty eh? I'll help out. $25 donated. Now that I won't need to buy spinners for my Schwinn Stingray for another couple of months, I can afford to be a little philanthropic! :thumb:

And I think THIS is cool. A few of us here in Colorado were kicking around the idea of a foundation to help the US Downhill squad just GET to Worlds - seems a lot of racers that make Worlds for the US are on shoestring budgets; people like VanDine, Gale and Milan that have day jobs just to pay rent, struggle and car-pool to make regional races, etc. Plus, how can a 17 or 18 year old Junior afford to fly to Les Gets, you know? I know that the parentals will help out when they can and all, but a little extra for the effort would never hurt.
Unfortunately, we talked about it and that's about as far as it got - we're too busy running races and having jobs and racing races and that kind of thing. It's the same old story, I suppose.

James-is the 'rules and regulations' posted somewhere on who/what/where/when/why about the bounty-it was my impression it was just money to fill a prize money void. After reading all of these confusing posts, it sounds like it is a prizelist with rules and regulations?

do it like the 'Racer X gas card' in moto. Money goes to the top privateer.
wait, we're all privateers.... okay then.

There are a few regulations and stuff, but it's pretty straightforward. Info's on our website: http://www.go-ride.com/bounty.html
By the way, thanks for the bill, Stik. I got the shoptangerine.com link on the page.
