he's calling that glob of who knows what a stong weld?
Wait...aren't those lowers...um...
Nevermind. I really don't know what to say.
Things like this make me have no hope for the future of mankind.

Maybe this guy is Paris Hiltons brother?

Wait, you mean the shop I worked at was not the only one? I thought every idiot on a bike in the world all went to that one shop.
That means they're everywhere!

How did he weld that magnesium? Must have had some super duper tricked out alloy-mag MIG wire huh? Dumbest idea Ive eve seen.

Just another point in my case that some people just dont use brains. Reminds of the time this kid in my LBS bought himself a new frame because his frame cracked. then decide to keep it and build it up for his Girlfriend.. they both ride downhill. When I said "dont you think thats a little unsafe?" his answer... "its only a small crack"
oh well.. what could ya do???

I think there's a disclaimer on pinkbike saying "if you buy something, it fails and you die as a result, we're not responsible."

Hahahaha... $300 firm. That's beautiful. Great find :thumb:
I wonder how many emails he's gotten saying he's a raging moron?
Everyone should email him and say, "Sweet fork... Wish I had the money, I'd buy it in a second!"

Do you think he at least dismantled the shock before he welded it? All that heat...*shudders*

Do you think the fork legs are still parallel?

But I heard that melted internals preform better:nuts:
that would make either a nice lamp or TP holder.
It's not safe for those either.
I would bury it half way and let my tomatoes grow on it.

Do you think the fork legs are still parallel?
That's what I was thinking.
They would have to be wider at the arch or twisted outward at the dropouts.

"No, you don't have to crash to bend our lowers, you can do it from just riding."
Greatest thing I have ever heard from the pits. :D

even if the weld is "good" the thing was never heat treated after words. there for that arch will be just about soft as butter

Here's a few things about welding magnesium I found.
You think all of this was considered when this thing was welded?
Characteristics
Welding-magnesium alloys require lower amounts of heat for melting than most other materials because of low melting point and other favorable characteristics. However a larger amount of distortion, relative to other metals, may arise due to high thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore adequate precautions must be taken.
<snip>
One of the most common Welding-magnesium applications is the repair of castings either as cast or after service. Preparation is most important and should exclude all contamination from extraneous materials. Generous bevels should be prepared for allowing full penetration, use of backing plates is recommended.
The need for preheating when Welding-magnesium is dictated by the degree of joint restraint and by metal thickness: for thick walls and a short welding bead, it may not be required. Preheating should be performed as needed possibly in a furnace with protective atmosphere for reducing oxidation. One of the recommended procedures to minimize weld cracking is to weld from the center towards the sides (one half after the other). Thermal shocks should be avoided.

Eeeeek. I wouldn't use that thing for a boat anchor. $300 "firm," that kills me. You know, firm, unlike the lowers...

i'm pretty sure those are aluminum lowers. But the alumnum alloys used in casting arent very good for welding anyways i think.

I thought those were magnesium lowers.
P.S. Why would you pay $40 for that?

well Marz has traditionally used aluminum in its Bomber line, but i think some later models (maybe the marathons?) are mag

Thats what I was gonna say....looks like he soldered the fork lowers together. That's beautiful. :stosh:
Holy crap...look at those fork lowers. They call those parallell?

I suppose we should cut the guy some slack. He is Canadian after all; it's lucky he even knows how to use the intarweb at all.

Hey, maybe the guys doing the chutes and ladders competition in Ashland should give the guy a free entry to ride their comp, as long as he uses this fork!
Brilliant!

But didn't you read the man's ad?
"welds where snapped. Strong as new."

He probably didn't even use real solder, but got the cheepie crap you can melt with a cigarette lighter. How does he expect it to survive UPS's careful handling of fragile contents and arrive with faux weld intact for the buyer's initial inspection? He'd better throw some chewed-sour bubble yum and electrical tape on that sucker pronto!

So this guy grinds down the inside of his arch to fit a 3 inch tire then cracks it, then welds it, and is now trying to sell it for 300 cad... Crazy. I would think he would have been better off buying new lowers and selling it as a complete normal fork...

Yeah, those lowers must be Al and not Mg, Magnesium is really tricky to work with, it likes to catch fire when heated. I have a Mg frame XC bike with super nice welds on it and I beleive only a handfull manufacturers in Europe are actually welding frames out of Mag right now...... requires an inert atmosphere and other special techniques.

I emailed him telling I'd be interested in buying the fork for parts, not the lowers. I told him he could throw them out because they're unsafe. I also said I'd check to see how much lowers were and I'd get back to him. He responded by saying it was up to me although he claimed the fork was welded by a professional and it was stronger than ever! I don't think he realizes I'd offer $40cdn for the 'scratched' tubes and crowns with the missing knob.
